Markets hit fresh highs for ‘09 yet again last week, as the first round of earnings helped to assuage investor concerns that operating results would underpin robust gains in equities this year. All told, the Dow gained 130 points to end the week at 9995 after briefly cracking the 10,000 mark, gaining 1.3% on the week and extending its gains to 13.9% on the year. The Nasdaq gained 0.8% on the week to close at 2156, up 36.8% on the year, while the S&P 500 and Russell 2000 gained 1.5% and 0.2% respectively, bringing their YTD totals to 20.4% and 23.4%.

Earnings stole the spotlight last week as things got off to a strong start early with JP Morgan handily beating expectations calling for $0.51 per share, reporting earnings of $0.82 per share. Citigroup

PPI Rises on Energy – Analyst Blog

Dirk Van Dijk (September 15th, 2009) Writes:
The producer price index for August came in at a much higher-than-expected 1.7% increase for the month, following a 0.9% decline in July and a 1.8% increase in June. The consensus expectation was for a rise of just 0.8%.

However, it was almost all because of higher energy costs. Core (ex food and energy) inflation was just 0.2% (just a notch higher than the 0.1% expected), following a 0.1% decline in July and a 0.5% increase in June. Energy prices rose 8.0% following a 2.4% decline in July and a 6.6% increase in June.

On a year-over-year basis, producer prices were 4.3% lower, but in July they were 6.8% lower. Core producer prices are up 2.8% on a year-over-year basis. The year-over-year numbers are going to start looking much hotter in the future, as most of the really big declines were in the fall of last year, especially in the fourth

Medarex Acquisition Clears Review – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (August 13th, 2009) Writes:
Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. (BMY) yesterday announced that the regulatory review period for its cash tender offer to acquire Medarex Inc. (MEDX) has expired. On July 28, 2009, Bristol-Myers had initiated an offer to buy all outstanding shares of common stock of Medarex for $16 per share. The clearance of the review, necessary under the anti-trust law, allows the $2.1 billion deal to proceed.   With the Medarex acquisition, Bristol-Myers will acquire the UltiMAb Human Antibody Development System, which produces high affinity, fully human antibodies for use in a broad range of therapeutic areas, including immunology and oncology. Bristol-Myers will also acquire Medarex’s next-generation Antibody-Drug Conjugate (ADC) technology, which is a novel and proprietary platform that could open new fields in oncology drug development.   Medarex’ pipeline includes seven antibodies in clinical trials under its sole sponsorship and three other antibodies which are being co-developed with other partners. ...

ISIS: Big Blockbuster Potential – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (April 6th, 2009) Writes:
Highlights include Isis Pharmaceutical, Inc. (ISIS) and Genzyme Corp. (GENZ).We are keeping our Buy rating and $22 price target on Isis Pharmaceuticals (ISIS). We encourage investors to pick up the shares at this level. We think commercialization of mipomersen for HoFH under an accelerated approval should come in early 2011. Mipomersen represents one of the largest potential blockbuster drugs to come to market in the next few years.Additionally, the path to market outside the U.S. may be easier than the Street anticipates. We see today's price as a significant opportunity to pick up the premier antisense development company on the market for a discounted price. We are big fans of antisense technology and believe that the number of potential therapeutic applications is enormous. Antisense drugs may have significant potential to treat a number of diseases where small molecule and biologic compounds ...

Stock Market News for April 6, 2009 – Market News

Zacks Market Commentaries (April 6th, 2009) Writes:

Asian markets rose for a fourth day amid a global rally in stocks as hopes that the worst of the economic crisis is over boosted demand for riskier assets.  Investors continued to look at the bright side of things, shrugging off a U.S. jobs report on Friday which showed unemployment rose to 8.5% in March.  Although the numbers were up from 8.1% in February, they were only slightly worse than expected.  Sunday's launch of a long-range missile by North Korea appeared to have little impact on the markets and was seen as having little economic implication.  Boosting the sentiment further were U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's comments that policies to ease the financial crisis through infusion of billions of dollars in aid were beginning to work.

Japan's Nikkei 225 stock average closed up 108.09 points, or 1.2%, to 8,857.93, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng jumped 452.35 points,

More Biotech M&A: Bristol-Myers Offers $60 Per Share in Cash for ImClone Systems

Mike Havrilla (July 31st, 2008) Writes:

Shares of ImClone Systems (IMCL) are skyrocketing in pre-market action, trading up over 40% to around $66 per share on word of a $60 per share all-cash buyout offer by Bristol-Myers (BMY), which is its partner for EGFR cancer therapy Erbitux.

The market is anticipating a higher bid for ImClone as it is trading about 10% above the buyout offer. This deal follows a spate of biotech deals in recent times, including Roche’s buyout offer for its remaining stake in Genetech (DNA).

The accompanying chart displays the performance of ImClone, Bristol-Myers, and the iShares Nasdaq Biotech ETF (IBB) over the past year.

Another Micro-Cap Biotech Buyout

Mike Havrilla (July 10th, 2008) Writes:

SGX Pharma (Nasdaq: SGXP) 6-Month Chart

Shares of SGX Pharma (SGXP) soared after hours Tuesday on news of an all-cash $64 million buyout from Eli Lilly (LLY). The buyout represented a premium of more than 100% at $3 per share for SGX, which is being acquired for its drug discovery platform focused on oncology. The two companies have collaborated since 2003, and the deal is expected to close during the second half of the year.

Recently, several buyouts at 100%-plus premiums for micro-cap biotechs such as cancer drug developer Kosan Biosciences (KOSN) by Bristol-Myers (BMY) and Barrier Therapeutics by privately-held Stiefel Labs have taken place as larger pharmaceutical companies look for deals to bolster their pipeline and product portfolio. Also, shares of many small and micro-cap biotechs are trading at multi-year or all-time lows as risk-averse investors have avoided the entire group in response to bear market …
