That was almost double the returns of the 2nd highest performing industry — oil and gas — at 32 cents for each dollar invested. And, thanks to President Obama’s American Reinvestment and Recovery Plan, clean energy is poised to be the top performer again in 2009. br /br /In his first White House blog, dated January 24, 2009, President Obama wrote that his Recovery and Reinvestment Plan will “invest in our most important …

Agrium (AGU) Lifts Guidance, Stock Surges

Trader Mark (June 11th, 2008) Writes:
Agrium (AGU) the smallest of the 3 major potash producers in Canpotex is out this morning with increased guidance - expect the same from Mosaic (MOS) and Potash (POT). This is leading the sector higher with AGU up 9% in early trading - keep in mind unlike the other 2 names mentioned, Agrium has a large retail component. Essentially they've taken their own lowball guidance up by around 80 cents, and now are firmly over the analysts $2.50. Looks like analysts are *still* behind the curve even after making huge upward revisions the past 60-90 days, once they saw the writing on the wall - writing we were urging them to see last fall [Oct 23: Analysts Still Doubting the Fertilizer Stocks] I wroteFolks, I am not a full time fertilizer analyst working for a major brokerage (in fact the ...

Jos. A. Bank Clothiers, Inc

Declan Fallon (June 5th, 2008) Writes:
Jos. A. Bank Clothiers, Inc (JOSB) had a fun Wednesday as it followed through on an earlier 200-day MA break with heavier volume on the release of earnings. It also had some good technical support with a new reaction high in the MACD, although on-balance-volume didn't confirm with a new high of its own. It has however seen a steady increase in bull trend strength with an ADX knocking around 32.78 and rising. Stops can be placed along rising support connecting April-June reaction lows or the 20-day MA. The Point-n-figure chart is riding a May 28th double top breakout with a target of $43.00. Options players might like some January 09 $17.50 strike at $13.80 from the Ask which is just an $0.80 premium on the June expiration calls at the same strike. ...

Bookkeeping: Ringing the Register

Trader Mark (May 8th, 2008) Writes:
I don't have anything earth shattering to report on these sales, I just want to build more cash and lock in more profits in my layer in, layer out approach. These are names I have not taken any profits on of late, so I am going to begin now. Mechel (MTL) always seems to lag the other domestic names in iron/coal etc by a few days, so its finally making its move, so I am taking a bit off here; same with Cleveland Cliffs (CLF) which despite an "ok" quarter jumped post earnings - it seems people are willing to excuse any bad results in anything in the steel (or related) sectors at this point, and a bit off National Oilwell Varco (NOV). I reversed this week's earlier buys of Potash (POT) and Mosaic (MOS) for small losses (yes I'm a flip flopper - the charts looked ready for ...

Dow and Nasdaq 100 are Indices to Watch

Declan Fallon (May 1st, 2008) Writes:

The Fed reversal started late in the day, although futures suggest a higher open. The Dow flashed a (bearish) gravestone doji on higher volume, with the 200-day MA lurking overhead to act as resistance. A push back to the 50-day MA looks the most favored response to relieve overbought conditions, but any close higher today would make a strong case for a 200-day MA breakout. Why? The current set-up looks picture perfect from a bear’s perspective, so if it didn’t play to expectation you would have to be worried (from the bear side).

The Nasdaq 100 has inched its way to the 200-day MA. The gap created at 1,850 looks a logical downside target, but it wouldn’t take much buying to push …
