Zacks Market Commentaries (November 19th, 2009) Writes:
Boeing Co. (BA) delivered its first 777-300ER (Extended Range) airplane to GE Capital Aviation Services and its lease customer Philippine Airlines. It is the first 777 in the fleet of Philippine Airlines. The aircraft was packed with relief supplies for victims of Typhoon Ketsana.  The airline has four more of this aircraft on order with Boeing. Moody’s Downgrades Boeing – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 15th, 2009) Writes:

Moody’s Investor Services (MCO) has downgraded Boeing Co.’s (BA) rating outlook to "negative" from "stable". The major reason for the downgrade was the delay in the airplane maker's new 787 series, besides other setbacks that had hurt its financial flexibility.   Pitted against Airbus’s A319 aircraft, Boeing’s 787 series is plagued by delays. The inaugural test flight at the end of fiscal 2009 is more than two years behind the original delivery schedule. The company has already deferred the inaugural delivery of the 787 series aircraft five times.   Boeing has witnessed falling orders in the recent times for its commercial planes on account of tepid demand for air travel and cargo services. Already, a slew of commercial airlines have cancelled or deferred their fleet additions. Boeing has cut costs and announced reduction in its workforce along with scaling back production of some aircrafts. Moody's estimates a 20%

Northrop Bags Army Contract – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 8th, 2009) Writes:
Northrop Grumman Corp. (NOC) yesterday bagged a five-year $599 million contract from the U.S. Army to provide laser rangefinders. Northrop Grumman is supplying the army with its universal terrain lightweight designators/rangefinders since 2002. Till date, the company has delivered more than 800 of the systems to the Army.   This contract will boost the dwindling backlog of Northrop, which fell to $70.4 billion after the second quarter of fiscal 2009 from $76.9 billion year over year. Northrop’s backlog was affected by the cancellation of the $5.1 billion Kinetic Energy Interceptor program by the U.S. Government.   Northrop Grumman’s future success in the competitive defense industry depends upon its ability to develop and market its defense-related products and services to the U.S. Government, as well as its ability to provide the people, technologies, facilities, equipment and financial capacity needed to deliver those products and services with maximum efficiency. Pratt & Whitney Cuts Jobs – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (September 22nd, 2009) Writes:
Jet engine maker Pratt & Whitney said it plans to eliminate 1,000 jobs in Connecticut by 2011, transferring engine repair work to the Southeastern state of Georgia and Asia in a cost-cutting initiative.

This subsidiary of United Technologies Corp. (UTX) will close down its Cheshire, Connecticut, plant by early 2011. From the second quarter of 2010, it will begin shifting some operations from the East Hartford facility to Columbus, Georgia, Singapore and Japan. Pratt & Whitney, which is suffering due to sagging demand from airlines, employs 35,000 workers worldwide, with 11,000 in Connecticut.

The company rejected an offer that the Machinists union valued at more than $80 million in wage and other concessions and a state plan proposing $100 million in economic assistance over five years. Pratt & Whitney has vastly scaled back operations in the state since the 1960s, when more than 20,000 workers were employed.
