King Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NYSE: KG) said Thursday the Food and Drug Administration approved its drug Embeda, a painkiller that is designed to be abuse-resistant. The FDA approval covers the use of Embeda for moderate to severe chronic pain. Embeda’s primary ingredient is morphine, but the pills contain a core of a second drug called naltrexone. If the pill is taken normally, it will release the morphine. However if it is crushed or chewed, the naltrexone is released, canceling out the high from the morphine.

Retailers will start to release second-quarter results this week, accounting for nearly 10% of the 246 scheduled reports. Dow component Wal-Mart (WMT) will be joined by 15 other members of the S&P 500, including J.C. Penney (JCP), Kohl's (KSS) and Macy's (M).

The Fed will hold a 2-day meeting on Tuesday and Wednesday. No change in interest rates will be made, though the statement should acknowledge that the economy is nearing stabilization.

The bond markets could be volatile, not only because of the Fed meeting, but also because of quarterly refunding. The Treasury Department will auction 3-year, 10-year and 30-year bonds. The offerings should total $75 billion.

Most of the week's economic data will be released after the Fed's meeting, with the exception of the preliminary estimate of Q2 productivity. We'll see the latest industrial production and consumer sentiment numbers on Friday.

The auditors at General Motors Corp. (GM) have raised “substantial doubt” about the carmaker’s odds of surviving without filing for bankruptcy protection. “Amid the automotive depression, GM is dependent upon the largesse and forbearance of the U.S. and foreign governments to sustain its various entities,” Standard & Poor’s equity analyst Efraim Levy said in a note for clients, Reuters reported. Shares of Blockbuster Inc. (BBI) have doubled in price to 44 cents in afternoon trading as the company denied reports that it was considering filing for bankruptcy.

The stock declined as much as 86% on Tuesday as reports poured in that it has hired law firm Kirkland & Ellis LLP for a possible bankruptcy filing. Company spokeswoman Karen Raskopf has now clarified that the law firm was hired for Blockbuster's refinancing and capital raising initiatives and not for bankruptcy.

The company, which will report fourth quarter earnings on Mar 19, is expected to comment on the status on the various options being considered to refinance its senior credit facility (which matures on Aug 20).

Circuit City Stores Inc. (CC) has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, a week after the struggling electronics retailer announced it would close 155 of its 566 U.S. stores by Dec. 31 and slash its workforce by 17%.

“The decision to restructure the business through a Chapter 11 filing should provide us with the opportunity to strengthen our balance sheet, create a more efficient expense structure and ultimately position the company to compete more effectively,” James A. Marcum, vice chairman and acting president and chief executive officer, said yesterday (Monday) in a statement.

In the past year and a half, Circuit City has created nothing but a collection of ugly headlines. The Richmond, VA-based Circuit City has $3.4 billion in assets and $2.32 billion in liabilities, including a $119 million debt to Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ) and a $116 million debt to Samsung Electronics Co.,

Circuit City Stores Inc. (CC) will close 155, or 20%, of its 566 U.S. stores by Dec. 31 and slash its domestic workforce by about 17% as the fledging electronics retailer scrambles to conserve cash and reverse six consecutive quarters of falling sales.

In the company’s Monday release, Circuit City said it is closing stores in 55 metro areas and will exit 12 markets entirely. It also said it is reducing future store openings, “aggressively” renegotiating current leases and considering “all available options and alternatives to restructure its business.”

The release also throws a lot of blame, citing “waning consumer confidence,” a “significantly weakened retail environment” and “unfavorable macroeconomic conditions.”

Circuit City also said it is waiting for nearly $80 million tax rebate it believes the federal government owes the company.

That figure is nearly twice its shrunken market cap.
