We have several tier-1 firms out positive on Monsanto (NYSE:MON) this AM:

- Merrill Lynch is raising their tgt to $165 from $155 (Reit Buy) noting that at its recent investor field event Monsanto indicated that fiscal 2009 biotech trait price increases will be above earlier expectations, particularly for triple stacked corn up 33% on average from 2008 versus June guidance of a 20% increase. MLCO's proprietary review of Monsanto’s just-issued price lists indicate that the trait increase approaches 50% for the premium product (VT triple) in the high-yield, high-rootworm pressure areas, but is roughly flat in lower-yielding, low rootworm pressure areas, which they believe will drive penetration rates. Second generation Roundup-tolerant soybeans will be priced $20/acre above first generation versus original expectations of $15. The first generation product will see a seed and trait increase of ~$12/acre, which will be largely offset by higher production costs.

Firm is raising their F2009 and 2010 estimates to $5.10 and $6.10 to reflect the improved pricing outlook in both the seed and genomics segment and in Roundup.

- Morgan Stanley notes that following Monsanto’s third annual Whistle Stop investor event in Monmouth, IL they have increasing conviction in: i) The Company’s ability to execute its overall business plan regardless of the commodity price environment (i.e., secularly higher commodity prices provide upside to the opportunity set, but not the opportunity set itself); ii) The efficacy of Monsanto’s pipeline products; and iii) The Company’s ability to commercialize its pipeline on time. Firm expects the confluence of the above to allow Monsanto to continue to enjoy corn and soybean market share gains (i.e., bigger castle) while lengthening its lead in developing new farm biotechnology (i.e., wider moat).

While Monsanto shares may remain volatile around swings in the US$ and crude oil price, the firm sees only correlation in this regard and not causation (i.e., no P&L impact) and therefore anticipate that as Monsanto continues to execute on its business plan regardless of the US dollar,
crude oil price or corn price (i.e., it anticipates corn gross profit to grow 25-30% in F2009 against a 25% comp), Monsanto shares will trade up towards their intrinsic value.

Reits Overweight and $170 tgt.

Notablecalls: I think these two calls serve to push the stock towards higher levels today. I feel that under overall positive tone the stock could reach $120+ in coming weeks.

Note that Citigroup is out with a positive Fert. call this AM, pushing Potash (NYSE:POT) as their Top Pick. This will surely help the positive sentiment.

Enzon Pharmaceuticals’ (ENZN) key product Abelcet, a treatment for fungal infections, sales continued to deteriorate in 2008. Further, another major source of revenue, Royalty, is also under pressure from competition. However, sales in two other products, Oncaspar (for acute lymphoblastic leukemia) and Adagen (for severe combined immunodeficiency disease) are picking up momentum and offsetting the sales decline from Abelcet and Royalty.

We are impressed with strong sales growth of Oncaspar. We expect total revenue to remain stable or experience modest growth in the coming years while the company is progressing well with its clinical developments. Enzon is also advancing its pipeline to drive long-term growth. We maintain our Hold rating on the shares. We see a balanced risk/reward profile for Enzon. In our view, there are limited near-term catalysts to drive the shares higher.

We believe the company’s pipeline is in a show me mode, and we do not see Enzon shares getting the benefit of investor enthusiasm over the near term. We don’t see great value creation with the split of its biotech business and the sale of its specialty pharmaceutical business to its shareholders.

Our $10 price target assumes a total market capitalization of $440 million, or 2.2x the total fiscal 2008 revenue of $199 million. From a peer valuation standpoint, this seems very cheap. However, if we consider the week outlook of the company, the target price is warranted.

Biogen Idec, Inc. (BIIB) posted solid results in the first half of 2008, driven by solid sales of both multiple sclerosis drugs Avonex and Tysabri. Yet, just when things were looking solid from a fundamental standpoint, two cases of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) popped up in Europe.

As a result, we have adjusted down our Tysabri over the next several quarters by approximately 15 percent. Visibility is low, and fears of more PML cases to come are creating significant angst.

Yet, Tysabri PML aside, Biogen's pipeline may be the best in biotech. The name would truly be an excellent take-out candidate for a large-cap pharma name. That is, if the Tysabri-PML risk can be quantified. Or, if the stock gets so cheap that even with the Tysabri-PML risk, it's worth a takeout.

The near $20 point drop in stock price has created an attractive long-term entry price. Unfortunately, however, over the near-term, the stock will probably be stuck in sideways trading range while the market digests the resurgence of PML risk.

Biogen's stock is currently trading at 15x 2008 EPS, a premium to most large-cap pharmas, but a discount to the biotech peer-group. Still, the pipeline and manufacturing capacity certainly make the name look intriguing. We expect data on several of these pipeline candidates in 2008 and 2009. This may be the catalyst that investors, or a large-cap pharmaceutical company, are waiting for. In the meantime, we see $56 as fair value; or 16x our 2008 EPS of $3.54.

Optimer Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (OPTR) is a biopharmaceutical company specializing in anti-infective drug development and commercialization.

The company has two phase III drug candidates: Difimicin for Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD), and Prulifloxacin for infectious diarrhea. Although we are optimistic about the prospect of both Difimicin and Prulifloxacin in terms of their clinical trial results and FDA approval, we are very concerned about the competition in the CDAD and infectious diarrhea markets as both drug candidates face intense competition from both big pharmaceutical companies such as Pfizer (PFE) and Bayer and smaller biotech companies like ViroPharma (VPHM) and Salix Pharma (SLXP).

In addition to competition from branded products, Difimicin and Prulifloxacin also face competition from generic antibiotics. The company ended 2Q08 with cash and equivalent of $44.2 million. We believe that the company's cash position can only last through 2009. We maintain our Hold rating on Optimer with price target of $9.50. We expect the stock to trend sideways in the next 6 to 12 months.

We arrive at our price target by using a P/S [price-to-sales] ratio of 18x, multiplied by our estimated 2011 revenue of $43 million, discounted at 25% for 2 and half years. Risks associated with our price target include any possible approval delay of Difimicin or Prulifloxacin by the FDA. Upside to our price target may come from the positive phase III trial results for Difimicin and Prulifloxacin.

In the second quarter of 2008, revenue for Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (ALNY) came in at $23.8 million, an 161% increase year-over-year, but less than our estimate of $33 million. The significant increase in revenues in the second quarter of 2008 was primarily related to $13.4 million of net collaboration revenues related to the companyÂ’s alliance with Roche.

Revenues for the second quarter of 2008 also included $10.4 million of expense reimbursement and amortization revenues from Novartis AG (NVS), Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Department of Defense (DOD), Biogen Idec, InterfeRx, research reagent and services licensees and other sources.

The company also announced a development and commercialization deal for ALN-RSV01 (currently in a second phase II trial) in Asia with Kyowa Hakko in June. We maintain our Hold rating on the shares of Alnylam with a price target of $38.5.

We believe the company will continue to form major new alliances with leading pharmaceutical and biotech companies in the coming quarters or years. As a result, we continue to expect revenue variations quarter by quarter in the foreseeable future as collaboration is the major source of the company s total revenue.

We are comfortable with the companyÂ’s current cash position, which relieves us from the concern about its cash burn rate. We think the financial results had only limited impact on the companyÂ’s share price as investors are more focused on new major alliance establishment and the companyÂ’s pipeline advancement.

ICON Plc's (ICLR) share price has been steadily climbing higher for most of 2008, producing excellent returns in a very challenging environment. The company's second-quarter results were ahead of analyst estimates for the fourth time in the last four quarters, providing additional fundamental strength to drive shares higher.

ICON Plc offers clinical research services to pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies in the United States and Europe. The company was founded in 1990, has a market cap of $2.44 billion and is headquartered in Dublin, Ireland.

Second-Quarter Results

Shares of ICLR have extended their gains after the company reported excellent second-quarter results on July 22.

Revenue was up 49% from last year to $218 million. Net income totaled $18.8 million, up from $13.3 million in the same period last year. This produced earnings of 62 cents per share, ahead of analyst estimates by three cents.

A History of Surprising

This company has established a pattern of surprising and beating analyst estimates, having done so over the last four quarters by an average of 3 cents, or 5.25%.

Guidance Raised

After the solid performance ICON raised its 2008 earnings and revenue forecast. The company now expects earnings to fall between $2.46 and $2.52 per share, and revenue between $870 and $890 million. Analysts are projecting 27% earnings growth in 2009, with the next-year estimate pegged at $3.20 per share.

Valuations

With shares trading above $80, this is not a cheap stock. Based upon the current-year estimate its forward P/E multiple is 32X, a big premium to the overall market. It is an indication that investors are expecting strong earnings from the company and pricing anticipated future growth into its share price.

The Chart

ICLR shares have had an awesome year, delivering steady gains as its stock price has climbed from less than $60 to the recent high above $83. This also happens to be a new 52-week and all-time high. This high is once again under pressure, take a look at the chart below.

Merrill Lynch upgrades Biogen-Idec (NASDAQ:BIIB) to Buy from Underperform based on their assessment of the company’s earnings growth potential, an improved outlook in the multiple sclerosis (MS) market, and a diversified mid to late-stage pipeline. Applying an average biotech P/E of 19x 2009E EPS (implied PEG of 1.0) they believe BIIB is significantly undervalued given expected growth, driven by acceleration of Tysabri usage in MS and the recent launch in Crohn’s. Key near-term driversinclude better-than-expected Q2 earnings and a Tysabri/PML update, which they believe is likely to be favorable. Additionally, with a 9% price increase for Avonex and 3% for Tysabri at the end of Q2, we expect the company to raise guidance for FY 2008. Firm believes the Street has largely ignored BIIB’s fundamentals given the PML overhang and activist movements. These fundamentals continue to improve, making BIIB an attractive large-cap pick in H2 2008.

NDC sales data suggests that Tysabri sales are tracking above estimates, likely reflecting the recent Crohn’s disease launch (March) and increased clinician comfort with Tysabri usage in MS. Merrill expects Avonex sales at least in-line with expectations. Given the recent price increases for Avonex (9%) and Tysabri (3%), they anticipate continued revenue strength and upward guidance revision.

Biogen will provide a 2-year update for Tysabri either prior to the earnings call or on the call. Given the lack of negative press, the firm believes this update will be favorable, with a significant number of patients from the clinical trials exceeding 2- years of exposure. This is an important milestone, and a favorable report is likely to increase physician comfort with Tysabri usage.

Price tgt is upped to $79 frm $64.

Notablecalls: In light on Genentech's (DNA) buyout offer from Roche, I think this BIIB upgrade will have legs. I expect to see at least a 5% upside move in BIIB today.

The National Institute of Health has discovered that strong stem cells can be found in baby teeth, and there are stocks of several companies involved in stem cell research. Last month, a dental practice management company in Houston announced that they will offer a service of storing stem cells from baby teeth. Extensive research is being done to utilize stem cells for gene therapy and the treatment of multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and many other medical conditions.

Another source of stem cells is cord blood, the blood from an umbilical cord. The saving and storing of cord blood has become a fast growing business. Richard Branson, founder and head of Virgin Records and Virgin Atlantic Airways, set up a cord blood bank. Even Stem Cell Bonds were issued by the state of California last year.

Here are several stocks which are pure plays or semi-pure plays in the stem cell business. All but one of these have market caps over $300 million.

Alexion Pharmaceuticals (ALXN) is a Connecticut based company with a $2.4 billion market cap that is involved in the development of biologic therapeutic products for the treatment of hematologic and cardiovascular disorders, auto-immune diseases, and cancer. The stock has a forward PE of 49.6.

ARIAD Pharmaceuticals (ARIA) is a Massachusetts based company, with a $179 million market cap, that is involved in the development of treatments for cancer by using small molecules to regulate cell signaling. Their cancer products are used to treat solid tumors, sarcomas, hormone refractory prostate cancer, and endometrial cancer. The stock has generated negative earnings of 88 cents per share. It is a low cap stock and should be considered speculative.

Celera Group (CRA) is a New York Stock Exchange company that was founded in 1937. It is involved in the research of new diagnostic markers, using proprietary genomics and proteomics discovery procedures and diagnostic products. Some of their products are used for the detection of HIV, hepatitis C, and cystic fibrosis .They are in collaboration with Abbott Laboratories (ABT), Genentech (DNA), and General Electric (GE). The stock has a forward P/E of 92, and a PEG of 42.8.

Cellgene (CELG) is a New Jersey company involved in the discovery and production, of therapies designed to treat cancer and immune-inflammatory-related diseases. One of their main products is Thalomid, which is used for the treatment of erythema nodosum leprosum, a complication of leprosy. Last year, the company received patent on placental stem cell recovery. The stock has a forward P/E of 26, and a PEG of 0.98.

Dendreon Corporation (DNDN) This $650 million market cap company is involved in the discovery, development, and sales of active immunotherapies, monoclonal antibodies, and small molecule product candidates to treat cancer. They also manufacture the DACSÒSC stem cell enrichment device. The stock has had negative earnings of 1.06 per share.

Geron (GERN) is a Menlo Park, California based $310 million market cap company which develops cell-based therapies derived from human embryonic stem cells used for the treatment of various diseases and medical conditions such as spinal cord damage, heart failure, and diabetes. The stock has had negative earnings of 76 cents per share.

Integra Lifesciences Holdings (IART) is a New Jersey based $1.2 billion market cap company that develops, manufactures, and sells medical devices, implants, biomaterials, and instruments to the stem cell, surgery, and soft tissue repair markets. Their P/E is 40, and the PEG is 1.01.

Invitrogen Corporation (IVGN) is a California based $3.3 billion market cap company which sells products and services to research institutions, pharmaceutical companies and biotechnology companies, including tools for gene acquisition, gene cloning, and gene analysis techniques. The stock has a P/E of 21, and a PEG of 1.24.

Author does not own any of the above.

By Fred Fuld at Stockerblog.com

By Investopedia.com

Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are an investing innovation that combines the best features of index mutual funds with the trading flexibility of individual securities. ETFs offer diversification, low expense ratios and tax efficiency in a flexible investment that can be adapted to suit a multitude of objectives. (To learn more about the features and benefits that ETFs offer, see Advantages of Exchange-Traded Funds.) To reap the true benefit of investing in ETFs you need to use them strategically.

At the most basic level, ETFs can be used as part of both long-term and short-term investment strategies. Their low expense ratios and high trading flexibility make them attractive alternatives to traditional mutual funds.

Index Investing

From a strategic standpoint, the first and most obvious use of ETFs is as a tool to invest in broad-market indexes. On the equity side, there are ETFs that mirror the S&P 500, the Nasdaq 100, the Dow Industrials and just about every other major market index. On the fixed-income front, there are ETFs that track a variety of long-term and short-term bond indexes including the Lehman 1-to-3 Year Treasury, the Lehman 20-Year Treasury and the Lehman Aggregate Bond Index. (Again, if you are not familiar with the broad range of market index coverage that ETFs offer, see Advantages of Exchange-Traded Funds for more information.)

Using ETFs to cover the major market sectors, you can quickly and easily assemble a low-cost, broadly diversified index portfolio. With just two or three ETFs, you can create a portfolio that covers nearly the entire equity market and a large portion of the fixed-income market. Once the trades are complete, you can simply stick to a buy-and-hold strategy as you would with any other index product, and your portfolio will move in tandem with its benchmark.

Actively Managing a Longer-Term Portfolio

In a similar fashion, you can create a broadly diversified portfolio but choose a more active-management strategy instead of simply buying and holding to track the major indexes (which is passive management). While the ETFs themselves are index funds (meaning there is no active management on the part of the money manager overseeing the portfolio), this doesn't stop investors from actively managing their holdings. For example, say you believe that short-term bonds are set for a meteoric rise; you could sell your position(s) in the broader bond market and instead buy an ETF that specializes in short-term issues. (You could do the same for your expectations for equities.)

Of course, the major market indexes represent only a portion of the many investment opportunities that ETFs provide. If your core portfolio is already in place, you can augment your core holdings with more specialized ETFs, which provide entry into a wide array of small-cap, sector, commodity, international, emerging-market and other investing opportunities. There are ETFs that track indexes in just about every area, including biotechnology, healthcare, REITs, gold, Japan, Spain and more. (For more information about the many varieties of ETFs, read Introduction to Exchange-Traded Funds.) By adding small positions in these niche holdings to your asset allocation, you add a more aggressive supplement to your portfolio. Once again, you can buy and hold to create a long-term portfolio, but you can use more active trading techniques too. For example, if you think REITS are poised to take a tumble and gold is set to rise, you can trade out of your REIT position and into gold in a matter of moments at any time during the trading day.

Active Trading

If actively managing a long-term portfolio isn't spicy enough for your tastes, ETFs may still be the right flavor for your palette. While long-term investors might eschew active- and day-trading strategies, ETFs are the perfect vehicle if you are looking for a way to move frequently into and out of an entire market or a particular market niche. Since ETFs trade intraday, like stocks or bonds, they can be bought and sold rapidly in response to market movements, and unlike many mutual funds, ETFs impose no penalties when you sell them without holding them for a set period of time.

While it is true that you must pay a commission each time you trade ETFs, if you are aware of this cost and the dollar value of your trade is high enough, the commission cost is nominal. Consider, for example, a $10 commission on a $10,000 trade. At .1%, the cost is hardly worth mentioning.

Also, since they trade intraday, ETFs can be bought long or sold short, used in hedge strategies and bought on margin. If you can think of a strategy that can be implemented with a stock or bond, that strategy can be applied with an ETF - but instead of trading the stock or bond issued by a single company, you are trading an entire market or market segment.

Wrap Investing

For investors who prefer fee-based investments as opposed to commission-based trading, ETFs are also part of various wrap programs. While ETF wrap products are still in their infancy, it's a safe bet that more are coming soon.

Conclusion

Overall, ETFs are convenient, cost efficient, tax efficient and flexible. They are easy to understand and easy to use, and they are gaining in popularity at such a rapid pace that some experts anticipate that they will one day surpass the popularity of mutual funds. If ETFs haven't found a place in your portfolio yet, there is a pretty good chance that they will in the future.

Click here to review more information on Exchange Traded Funds, and the ETF Home Study Course.

Good day, and good investing trading ETF's for lower risk and higher returns.

Despite Flo's excitement that headline is misleading.

In posts that talk about stock picking versus all fund portfolios versus some combination of the two, comments get left opining that stock picking is difficult or risky or whatever. So for the fund investor who goes narrower than an SPY, EFA, AGG mix could they spend the time and do the work to own three stocks from themes that were especially compelling to them for which there was no sector or country product?

Sticking with three narrow themes for which I have no exposure, let's say an investor believes Cyprus (oh yeah, there's a stock market there) is the place to be, well for that person there is only one choice (that I know of); The Bank Of Cyprus (BCYPF) and it has been a pretty good proxy for the General Index of Cyprus (YTD the bank is down 28% and the index is down 29% and the charts look identical).

How about shipping stocks? A lot of people seem to like these, the story is clearly compelling (stuff's gotta get there from here) and many of them pay very large dividends. There are quite a few stocks that are in shipping one way or another but no sector fund to own.

Lastly let's say an investor thinks the plane leasing stocks are going to finally turnaround (they have been bludgeoned), there's a handful of these but no fund. Some of them capture the growth in passengers in places like India and if they can get their cash flow squared away they offer the chance for enormous dividends.

To be clear I don't own any of the three, I've tried to learn a little about them and do watch them to varying degrees.

So the question is could a fund investor reasonably learn about two or three or four disparate themes and devote 5% or maybe even 10% of the portfolio to them while putting the rest into some sort of well planned, properly diversified combo of broad-based ETFs or, if they are so inclined, sector funds (properly weighted)?

This is obviously core and explore. As far as risk of individual stocks, let's start with the premise that regardless of anyone's stock picking acumen it not difficult to discern when a stock is a lottery ticket, like a biotech whose only drug is in phase 1 or a mining company that has never actually mined anything. So that pretty much rules out a one day 75% hit to one of the three stocks.

The realistic risk from a bottoms up problem (meaning the wrong stock was selected), as opposed to a top down problem (like you buy a Chinese stock that cuts in half at the same time the market cuts in half), might be from an earnings problem which seems is usually no worse than a 20-25% hit (that is a relatively extreme reaction but of course there has been worse).

Another risk might come from something like losing out on a contract as recently happened to Boeing (BA), although the immediate impact was quite mild.

One last risk that seems to come up a few times lately (to be clear this is in no way an exhaustive list of risks) is some sort of balance sheet/accounting issue which again seems to max out at worse with a 20-25% immediate reaction.

One risk that is not very likely is fraud. If the probability of fraud is low then the probability of owning more than one fraud stock at the same time is incredibly low.

Additionally 2-3% each into three different stocks from different themes can mitigate some of the top down risk (like owning three discretionary stocks late in the cycle). Combine all of that with some sort of stop loss strategy on the three and the risk would seem to come in off the ledge a little bit.

The point of all of this is not that you should go out and buy stocks today. But if the only way into an important theme important is with a stock you should be open to the possibility of buying a stock.
