Another High Profile Case of Insider Trading

Christian Hill (November 19th, 2008) Writes:

On Monday, the SEC filed suit against Mark Cuban for insider trading. The suit alleges that in 2004 Cuban used non-public information to sell shares in Mamma.com, then a fledgling internet search engine.  The action allowed Cuban to avoid a $750,000 loss on the shares.

The suit states that Cuban dumped his 6.3 percent stake in the company after getting word that the company planned a private offering the next day, which would dilute the value of existing shares.

Of course, Cuban disagrees with the lawsuit, saying “I am disappointed that the Commission chose to bring this case based upon its Enforcement staff’s win-at-any-cost ambitions. The staff’s process was result-oriented, facts be damned. The government’s claims are false and they will be proven to be so.”

The real irony here is that in 2006, Cuban started the website sharesleuth.com that is “aimed at exposing securities fraud and corporate chicanery”. Oops.

Something Will Have To Give

Roger Nusbaum (November 17th, 2008) Writes:
Yesterday's post about taking 4% of principal as retirement income from the portfolio elicited a couple of opposing views which makes for a good debate. It is possible that this decade ends up being breakeven (or worse) for equities. While a ten year hitch with little to show is not unprecedented you figure most people have three to three and half decades to accumulate money. It seems like most people don't save much in their 20s but maybe that is wrong. So they have their 30s, 40s, 50s and a few years in their 60s.Once we get out of this funk domestic equity returns could be a few percentage points below normal for a while and folks may not put enough in foreign or other assets to make up for weak domestic results. How many people are going to be able ...

To Be A Great Trader, Think Like Wayne Gretzky

Justice Litle (November 17th, 2008) Writes:

Market forecasting can seem like a futile exercise. After all, 95% of the time, predicting what will happen next is impossible. But Justice Litle says its the huge opportunities on offer in the other 5% that make investing worthwhile. Here, he explains how traders can draw inspiration from ice-hockey legend Wayne Gretzky…

This from Taipan Daily:

Wayne Gretzky is widely regarded as the greatest ice hockey player of all time.

At first glance this is an odd thing. When you think of hockey players, you normally picture big, burly, broken-nosed guys with hulking frames and lighting-fast reflexes. (Or at least that’s what I picture. But then I’m not Canadian, eh.)

Gretzky, in contrast, was never all that big. At six feet and 185 pounds, he comes up an inch shorter than your humble editor (who also happens to weigh 185).

That’s not a lot of

Will The Fight Zone (TFZI.PK) be Part of the Sport Revolution?

QualityStocks (October 29th, 2008) Writes:

For many years, the major four sports, A.K.A. the “Big Four,” in the United States have been football, baseball, basketball and hockey. While other sports have generated large incomes and interest such as boxing and wrestling, the “Big Four” seemed untouchable. The Fight Zone and Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) may change the way the world looks at sports and MMA may sneak into the “Big Four” in the very near future.

MMA is a full contact sport that includes a mix of boxing, wrestling and martial arts. While violent and controversial, the sport has an incredible amount of live and television appeal. While many stadiums and casino-type forms have drawn large crowds for MMA events, television has become the main-stay for this young sport.

The leader in the MMA arena is Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). UFC will likely
