Good News for Bristol-Myers – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (November 23rd, 2009) Writes:
Recently, Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. (BMY) received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market Abilify (aripiprazole) for the treatment of irritability in pediatric patients having autistic disorder. Abilify can be used to treat children aged 6 to 17 years for symptoms of aggression toward others, deliberate self injury, temper tantrums and quick mood swings.  Bristol-Myers and Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co. jointly develop and distribute the drug in the U.S. and Europe. The FDA approval of Abilify for treating irritation in pediatric patients with autistic disorder is based on data from two eight-week late-stage studies in which Abilify significantly improved scores on the irritability subscale of the caregiver-rated Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC-I), compared to placebo.  The most common adverse affects were sedation, fatigue, vomiting, somnolence, tremor and pyrexia. However, the efficacy of Abilify for the maintenance treatment of irritability associated with autistic disorder was not ...

Baxter Eyes Swine Flu Market – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 19th, 2009) Writes:
Baxter International Inc. (BAX) announced that it sees multiyear opportunity in H1N1 vaccines, commonly known as Swine Flu vaccines. The company expects to recognize $30 million to $40 million in revenues from swine flu vaccines in the fourth quarter. Baxter has not speculated on H1N1 vaccine sales beyond the fourth quarter. However, increasing demand has raised hopes for a multiyear opportunity. Baxter started shipping the product from August 2009.   Baxter and four other companies Sanofi-Aventis (SNY); MedImmune, a subsidiary of AstraZeneca plc (AZN); GlaxoSmithKline plc (GSK); and Novartis have received authorization to market H1N1 vaccines. Baxter has received approval only for a two-dose vaccine and not a single-dose. Baxter uses its cell culture-based technology instead of the traditional one to produce these vaccines.   Baxter recently announced strong third quarter results. Earnings per share stood at 98 cents, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of ...

European Nod for Bristol Drug – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 6th, 2009) Writes:
Yesterday, Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. (BMY) and AstraZeneca Plc (AZN) announced that their diabetes drug Onglyza (saxagliptin) received the green light from the European Commission to be marketed in the 27 countries of the European Union (EU). Onglyza once daily was co-developed by Bristol-Myers and AstraZeneca. Onglyza can be used in combination with commonly prescribed oral anti-diabetic medications − metformin, sulfonylureas or thiazolidinediones for improving blood sugar levels in adults when those drugs alone fail to adequately control glycemic levels. The European approval is based on data from late-stage registrational trials which assessed the safety and efficacy of the drug and involved 4,148 type-II diabetes patients, including 3,021 patients treated with Onglyza. Onglyza is expected to be launched in Europe in the fourth quarter of this year. It will be the first diabetes drug to be launched in Europe under this partnership. As a reminder, ...

Array Meets Expectations – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (August 20th, 2009) Writes:
Last week, Array BioPharma Inc. (ARRY) reported a fourth-quarter net loss of 55 cents per share which was in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate. The company had a loss of 68 cents in the year-ago quarter. Net loss for fiscal 2009 was $2.67 per share, compared with $2.04 last year.

Quarterly revenue came in at $5.5 million, representing a 10% decline from the comparable quarter in 2008. Sales for the full year fell by 13% to $25 million.

The narrower quarterly loss was primarily attributable to lower spending on research and development. The company spent $21.3 million towards research and development for the quarter for the clinical advancement of its wholly owned drugs versus $28.4 million in year-ago quarter.

Last January, Array had announced a restructuring plan of scaling down its research and development costs and accelerating partnership initiatives to ensure sustainable growth under current market conditions.
