Toshiba to Outsource Chip Making – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (September 8th, 2009) Writes:
The technology leader in high definition products and the world's no. 2 manufacturer of NAND flash memory chips, Toshiba Corp., plans to outsource a part of the production of its next-generation 28-nanometer (nm) system chips.

According to industry sources, the chips will be used in a wide range of electronics such as game consoles, digital cameras, flat panel TVs and other electronic gadgets starting in April 2010. To meet demand by that period, Toshiba will have to ramp up production. Its customers include IT giants like Apple (AAPL), which has already purchased $500 million worth flash memory chips from Toshiba.

Toshiba currently manufactures chips at its plant in Oita, southern Japan and plans to outsource to expand its production if capacity is insufficient.

According to sources, Toshiba is holding discussion with Singapore’s Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Ltd. (CHRT) and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) to spin off Globalfoundries

Siemens Builds Mobile Water System – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (July 27th, 2009) Writes:
Siemens (SI), through its Water Technologies division, has fabricated a produced water treatment system for a major oil company’s site in western U.S. Sized for 6,000 barrels per day (bpd), the mobile system consists of a flotation unit, media filtration and cartridge filtration. The system also supports the customer’s green objectives by conserving fresh water and avoiding greenhouse gas emissions.

The flow-back feature of the water-treatment application is unique in that it leverages years of offshore produced water experience to meet onshore produced water objectives. The Veirsep system (a horizontal flotation system that incorporates several unique technologies to separate oil, grease and suspended solids from the flow-back stream) has been used in offshore applications to reduce oil and grease levels to meet discharge quality requirements.

The system is the most recent addition to Siemens’ modular Produced Water Services. These services are designed based on the water supply and

ABB Now a Hold – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (July 20th, 2009) Writes:

Visibility for Asea Brown Boveri (ABB) for the remainder of 2009 remains limited. Significant uncertainty remains surrounding the key demand drivers for the company’s products and systems. The business environment in March improved, but it is too early to say whether this indicates that the worst is over.

In addition, the year-on-year comparison of results in the second quarter of 2009 will be particularly challenging because of the very high levels of growth and earnings reported in the prior-year period.

The need for power transmission infrastructure in all regions – both equipment replacement and new transmission projects – has not changed in recent quarters. However, the cost and scarcity of project funding have delayed many power investment decisions, and ABB is unable to precisely forecast when the various government stimulus programs will have an impact or when the availability of funding will improve.

In the recent past, ABB has been able to
