South Korea Welcomes iPhone

Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPhone is finally reaching the hands of South Korean mobile users. The country’s telecom regulator Korea Communications Commission (“KCC") has granted Apple the license to sell the iconic handset in the domestic cell phone market. KCC has also lifted the restrictions that prohibited location-based services on smartphone devices such as the Google Maps application on iPhone.

South Korea’s second-largest wireless carrier KT Corp. (KTC) will start booking Internet order for iPhone (3G & 3GS) soon and begin selling it from Nov 28, 2009. The company targets to initially sell 150,000 units priced between KRW250,000 and KRW300,000 (US$216 and US$260). KT’s peer SK Telecom (SKM), the largest mobile operator in the country, is still negotiating with Apple for securing distribution rights.

South Korean wireless market is technologically advanced and relatively mature with roughly 47 million total subscribers, representing 96% penetration of the country’s population. Currently, the country’s cellular handset market is dominated by local companies such as Samsung and LG Electronics, two of the world’s leading handset manufacturers.

With KCC’s approval, South Korea is set to become one of the last major Asian countries to get the iPhone. The device has been already launched by China Unicom (CHU) in China in October 2009. Additionally, iPhone is also being sold in other major markets such as India, Japan and Australia.

KCC’s approval to allow foreign handset vendors to enter the domestic market is aimed at increasing the options for brand-conscious cell phone users rather than just limiting their choice to indigenously manufactured devices. In April 2009, the Korean government cleared the path for foreign handset vendors by abolishing a mandate requiring all mobile handsets sold locally to use a home-grown software platform.

AmEx to Buy Revolution Money

American Express Company (AXP) said on Wednesday that it will acquire Internet payment platform Revolution Money for about $300 million.

The deal is expected to close in early 2010. Following the closure of the deal, Revolution Money would operate as a subsidiary of AmEx. The founder and chief executive of Revolution Money, Jason Hogg, will continue as president and chief executive.

St. Petersburg-based Revolution Money was founded by AOL co-founder Steve Case’s Revolution LLC in 2007. Revolution Money provides payments through an internet-based platform and issues prepaid cards that can be used for offline payments or to withdraw cash from ATMs in the U.S. Additionally, Revolution Money offers MoneyExchange, a service to remit money by people using social and instant messaging networks.

California May Ban High-Watt TVs

In California, an average residential customer’s 10% electrical consumption goes to television sets. However the regulatory apprehension is that with upgrade to larger television sets the consumption pattern for television sets will spike by as much as 8% annually. This is a worrisome trend for the power hungry state which has to import around 15% of its requirements from outside the state to meet its huge requirement.

The regulators are dreading a return to the gory days of the California electricity crisis at the beginning of the century. The crisis was aggravated as the then government kept the price of electricity artificially low, encouraging wastage.

An energy-efficient TV would save a household roughly $30 a year per set in lowered electricity costs. If all 35 million television sets in the state were replaced with more efficient sets, Californians would save $8.1 billion over 10 years, according to the Energy Commission report. The standard also could help California meet the goals of its 2006 global warming law, which calls for the state to cut greenhouse gases 25% by 2020.

To reduce greenhouse gas emissions, utilities operating in California are spending big money. California’s renewable portfolio standard requires utilities to generate 33% of power from renewable sources by fiscal 2020. PG&E Corporation (PCG) plans to invest around $13 billion in the period 2009 - 2011. Another utility, Edison International’s (EIX) subsidiary Southern California Edison, is projecting capital expenditures for the period 2009 - 2013 in the range of $16.8 billion - $19.8 billion.

Autodesk Beats, Guidance Mixed

Autodesk Inc. (ADSK) revenues of $416.9 million were down 31.3% year over year, mainly due to a decrease of 43.9% year over year in Licenses revenues and partially due to a 2.8% decrease in Maintenance revenues. However, revenues were flat sequentially.

By geography, revenue from the Americas increased 2% sequentially but decreased 25% from the year-ago period. EMEA revenues declined 3% sequentially and 35% year over year on a constant currency basis. Revenue from the Asia Pacific decreased 7% sequentially and 33% year over year on a constant currency basis. Revenues from emerging economies represented 15% of total revenue and decreased 3% sequentially and 45% year over year on a constant currency basis.

Moreover, revenues from 3D design solutions were down 25% from the year-ago period but were flat sequentially. Revenues from 2D horizontal and vertical products declined 37% year over year and decreased marginally from the last quarter. We are positive on Autodesk’s migration from 2D products to 3D products, which have a higher margin.

Combined revenue from AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT declined 39% year over year. Although the company has a strong market position in the "mainstream" CAD market, it faces competition from Dassault Systemes. Moreover, the company competes against Adobe Systems Inc. (ADBE) and Apple Inc. (AAPL), among others.

Autodesk has a strong balance sheet with cash, investments and securities totaling $1.05 billion at the end of quarter and no long-term debt.

Dell’s Smartphone Strategy

Dell Inc. (DELL), one of the world’s leading computer manufacturer, has decided to start manufacturing its smartphone device. The company has zeroed in on Brazil as the first manufacturing destination and chosen Claro as its carrier partner in the region. Dell will also be manufacturing the device in China and partner with China Mobile in that region. The phone will be using the Google Android operating system.

Dell’s entry into the smartphone segment looks like a logical progression, as the company is already manufacturing and rolling out reasonably priced netbooks in the market. However, Dell is a late entrant into the market, unlike its peer Apple Inc. (AAPL), which has already grabbed a large share through smartphones such as iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS.

As per the technology research firm Canalys, third quarter 2009 worldwide smartphone shipments grew 4% year on year, to 41.4 million units. As per the findings of the research firm, Nokia (NOK) maintained its worldwide smartphone leadership position with a 40% share of the market, up from its year-ago position, but down 5% from the previous quarter. Research In Motion (RIMM) was in second place, with a market share of 21%, almost flat sequentially. Apple’s market share was 18% in the third quarter, up from the 14% it held in the second quarter, with significant improvement in the iPhone 3GS supply across many countries. HTC retained the fourth position with a 5% share.

There is no reason to think that Dell phones would not gain popularity considering the company’s history of innovation, although the success rate could vary as competition is intense. We believe that even if Dell is able to capture a small share of the smartphone market, the additional growth opportunity would be substantial.

American Dairy Beats Expectations

American Dairy Inc. (ADY) reported third quarter results before the opening bell today. The company’s net income from continuing operations stood at $11.1 million, or 52 cents per share, from a loss of $22.1 million, or $1.19 per share in the year-ago quarter. Quarterly earnings also surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate for a profit of 31 cents per share.

American Dairy is a leading producer and distributor of premium infant formula, milk powder, and soybean, rice and walnut products in China. The company, which operates through its wholly owned subsidiary Feihe Dairy and other subsidiaries, has 200 milk collection stations, 2 dairy farms and 6 production facilities. The company has capacity to produce approximately 1,220 tons of milk powder per day and a distribution network of over 90,000 retail outlets across China.

The Beijing-based company recorded an impressive 94.1% year-over-year growth in quarterly sales to $72.1 million. The expansion was primarily driven by strong demand for American Dairy’s milk powder products (mainly infant formula products), which recorded a 151.7% growth in volumes to 6,561 tons and contributed 77.5% to total sales. Moreover, the robust revenue performance was also helped by company’s augmented distribution network and efforts to expand into new geographic areas in China.

The company has the requisite financial strength and technical expertise to make a mark in this segment.

Apple Opens New Store in New York

Apple Inc. (AAPL) will open its newest retail store with an 8,500 square feet retail space in New York tomorrow. The store will help Apple deliver more Macs, iPods and iPhones, taking advantage of the coming holiday season. The new store is the fourth in Manhattan and fifteenth in New York.

To ensure a high-quality buying experience for its products, in which service and education are emphasized, the company has expanded and improved its distribution capabilities by opening its own retail stores in the U.S. and internationally.

The company operates a network of 280 retail stores in 10 countries across the world, including the U.S., U.K., Italy, Australia, Canada, Japan, China, Switzerland, Germany and France to drive the demand for its other products. Further, Apple is soon to open two new stores in Shanghai as well as London and Paris.

The company further plans to open 40 to 50 new larger retail stores next year, about half of which are expected to be outside the U.S. Apple had earlier estimated that it would open 25 to 50 new stores.

Retail sales increased 4.0% to $6.57 billion (averaging $26.0 million per store annually). Store traffic grew to around 170 million in fiscal 2009. The company has extended its footprint in international retail markets. Growing its presence in the international retail market, Apple opened its first store in Sydney and Beijing and opened stores in Switzerland, France and Germany during the calendar year 2008.

Apple's business strategy leverages its ability, through the design and development of its own operating system, hardware and many software applications and technologies, to provide its customers around the world with compelling new products and solutions, superior ease-of-use, seamless integration and innovative industrial design.

To attract customers during the holiday season, the company plans to offer gift-wrapping of any iPod or portable Mac for just $5. It will also allow customers to set aside a gift and pick it up at their local Apple store for free from Dec. 15 to Christmas Eve.

Apple’s stores hosted 42.7 million visitors during the last quarter, an increase of 7% from the year-ago period. The stores posted revenue of $1.87 billion ($7.6 million per store) in the quarter, the highest level ever and up 15% from the year-ago period.

Last month, Microsoft Corp (MSFT) announced the opening of its own first retail store in Arizona. But we do not expect Microsoft to catch up anytime.

Quality Systems Barely Beats

Quality Systems Inc. (QSII) reported fiscal second-quarter earnings of 41 cents, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate by a penny and the year-ago earnings by 4 cents.

Total revenues for the quarter increased 21.5% to $71.69 million from $58.98 million. The company’s NextGen Healthcare Information Systems division posted revenue of $67.4 million for the reported quarter, representing a 23% increase from the previous year.

Category-wise, System sales, including software, hardware and supplies, increased 5.9% to $26.24 million from $24.78 million. Revenues from maintenance, electronic data interchange (EDI), revenue cycle management (RCM) and other services grew 32.9% to $45.46 million from $34.19 million in the year-ago period.

The total cost of system sales, including software, hardware and supplies increased 16.8% to $7 million. Total cost of maintenance, EDI, RCM and other services for the quarter were $21.27 million as against $15.2 million in the year-ago quarter, up 39.9%. Consequently, total cost of revenues for the quarter increased 33.4% to $28.3 million. The company reported a gross profit of $43.4 million for the quarter opposed to $37.8 million in the year-ago period, up 14.8%.

Research & development spend for the quarter increased 30% to $4.34 million for the quarter. Selling, general and administrative expenses for the reported quarter increased 11.7% to $20.4 million.

Quality Systems exited the quarter with cash and cash equivalents of $75.4 million opposed to cash and cash equivalents of $70.2 million at the end of fiscal 2009.

Quality Systems, headquartered in Irvine, California, develops and markets healthcare information systems that automate certain aspects of medical and dental practices, networks of practices such as physician hospital organizations and management service organizations, ambulatory care centers, community health centers, and medical and dental schools. The company competes with players like Allscripts-Misys Healthcare Solutions, Inc. (MDRX) and Cerner Corp. (CERN).

Apple Beats Nokia in Smartphones

According to a recent Strategy Analytics research report, Apple Inc. (AAPL) surpassed Nokia (NOK) by generating the highest total operating profit in the industry for the third quarter of 2009. The research firm estimated Apple's operating profit for iPhone handset units to be $1.6 billion, compared to Nokia's (the number 1 handset maker) just $1.1 billion, beating the latter for the first time.

Apple entered the mobile phone market with its iPhone in 2007. The company has experienced tremendous growth since then, driven by the success of its iPhone. This has resulted in Apple becoming one of the most profitable in the industry. Apple is running the highest margin phone business and thus has undergone a total turnaround from a loss of $0.07 per share in 2001 to a profit of $6.29 per share in fiscal year 2009.

Apple has sold over 20 million iPhone units in fiscal 2009, a 78.3% increase from 2008. This strong unit growth contributed $6.7 billion in total revenues in 2009, an increase of 266.3% from 2008.

According to an IDC study, Apple’s smartphone market share of 17.1% in the third quarter of 2009 was lower than Nokia’s market share of 37.9%. Apple sold a meager 7.4 million iPhones for $4.5 billion in revenues, compared to Nokia’s 108.5 million handsets sold for $10.36 billion in revenues in the same period.

Despite holding a lower total market share and much lower number of units sold in the quarter, Apple’s operating profit surpassed that of Nokia due to higher prices and lower costs. Apple has been experiencing tremendous growth due to the success of the iPhone, as customer satisfaction remains the highest in the industry.

While, Apple is strongest at the high-end of the market, Nokia has a global reach and delivers a wider range of handsets targeting both low and the high-end consumers. The market for high-end players can slow more dramatically, while lower price point players may continue to grow, which can hurt Apple.

To attract customers, Apple recently reduced the price of its current generation 8GB iPhone 3G by $100 to $99. Thus, the attractive price point drove volume and generated significant amounts of deferred revenue.

However, Apple is facing an increasingly tough competition from Research In Motion (RIMM), Motorola (MOT) and Palm (PALM) in the smartphone market, who are offering new touch screen devices.

Third-Quarter Results

Revenue was up 5% from last year to $2.1 billion. Earnings also came in strong at $1.25 per share, easily outpacing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 90 cents. The company has beat in each of the last 4 quarters by an average of 31 cents, or 113%.

CEO John Coyne said that demand for the company's products is being fueled by the recent popularity surge in social media.

Estimates have spike since the good quarter was reported, with the current year adding 49 cents and moving to $4.38 per share.

Valuation

Based on this earnings projection, shares of WDC trade with a P/E of 7.5X, a sharp discount to the overall market.

Weakness in share sent Treasury prices higher, with the 10-year closing up 13/32, to 102 11/32.  The yield fell to 3.34%, from 3.39% late Monday.  On Tuesday, the 30-stock Dow Jones industrial average fell 50.71 points, or 0.50%, to 10,041.48.  The broad Standard & Poor's 500-stock index retreated 6.85 points, or 0.62%, at 1,091.06 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index lost 12.85 points, or 0.59%, to 2,163.47.  Market breadth was negative.  On the New York Stock Exchange, declining shares beat those that rose in price two to one on volume of 1.24 billion shares.

After the close yesterday, Yahoo Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO) and SanDisk Corp. (NASDAQ:SNDK) reported strong quarterly numbers that were well ahead of Street expectations.  Caterpillar (NYSE:CAT) was the leading gainer among the Dow 30 stocks, rising 3.4% after it reported estimate topping numbers.  Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) shares climbed 4.7%.

Military contractor Lockheed Martin (NYSE:LMT) fell nearly 6% after it announced weak 2010 outlook.  Chemical maker DuPont (NYSE:DD) and UnitedHealth Group Inc (NYSE:UNH) reported better-than-expected numbers, helped by cost-cutting measures.  However, DuPont (NYSE:DD) shares fell 2.2% after the company reported lower-than-expected revenue, even as earnings came in above estimates and the firm raised its full-year outlook.

Coca-Cola's (NYSE:KO) shares dropped 1.3% as it reported revenue below estimates, even as earnings were inline with expectations.  The company noted, "We expect the consumer to continue facing economic uncertainties into 2010 and for consumer sentiment to recover slowly." 

Interestingly, the market’s measure of volatility, the CBOE Vix, continued its southward move, falling 2.75% to 20.90. All ten S&P500 sectors ended in the red, led by declines in utilities (-1.2%), health care (-1.1%), and basic materials (-1.0%).  Technology stocks showed some strength and eased 0.03%.

Oil prices rose to an intraday high of $80.05 yesterday, the highest level in a year, before retreating a little and ending the session off 52 cents at $79.09.  The drop came amid concerns that the world's largest oil consumer might face a weaker-than-expected recovery. Moreover, OPEC Secretary General El-Badri noted that prices above $80 could hinder economic growth.  El-Badri said he does not expect prices above $100 in the near future due to what he called "no shortage of oil supply."

Today's markets will see earnings from big names including Boeing (NYSE:BA), Eli Lilly (NYSE:LLY), Freeport-McMoRan (NYSE: FCX), Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS), US Bancorp (NYSE:USB) and Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC) before the market opens.

Apple: 2nd Highest Growth Ever

Apple Inc. (AAPL) released Snow Leopard, the latest upgrade to the Apple Mac operating system in the quarter. In addition, Apple announced new upgrades to its iTunes and the iPod digital media players at a media event in Sep. The company plans to release iPhones in China via China Unicom (CHU) and entered into a three-year agreement to sell the iPhone 3G and 3GS in the country. We continue to believe that Apple will outperform its peers, given its strong iPhone sales and new product launches.

For the first quarter of fiscal 2010, Apple expects revenue in the range of $11.3 billion to $11.6 billion. EPS is expected to be in the range of $1.70 to $1.78. While this is below the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $1.92, the company traditionally gives extremely conservative guidance.

Apple posted impressive results in the quarter, fueled by strong Mac and iPhone sales. The company has undergone a total turnaround from a loss of 7 cents per share in 2001 to a profit of $6.29 per share in fiscal year 2009. Apple reported strong 2009 results with increased revenue and earnings growth despite the recession, while its rivals Nokia (NOK), Research In Motion (RIMM) and Palm Inc. (PALM) are still struggling to recover from the recession’s impact on consumer spending.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 96.28 points, or 0.96%, to close at 10,092.19.  The broader S&P 500 index jumped 10.23 points, or 0.94%, to 1,097.91 and the tech-heavy Nasdaq climbed 19.52 points, or 0.91%, to 2,176.32, its highest point since September 26, 2008.  Market breadth was positive, with advancing shares ahead of decliners by a margin of three-to-one.  Only five of the DJIA thirty declined in price.

After the close, iPhone maker Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Texas Instruments (NYSE:TXN) reported better-than-estimated numbers, fuelling hopes for the technology industry.  Last week Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) and Intel Corp’s (NASDAQ:INTC) numbers had come in above expectations.

Although there were some jitters last week after some major banks reported higher loan losses during the quarter, expectations that companies across a broad range of industries would report numbers above projections kept the momentum going.   Nevertheless, companies could find it relatively easy to beat analyst’s lowered bars of expectations and then turn in splendid performance in the future quarters as the economy moves into a recovery mode.

This week is likely to be decisive with 13 of the Dow 30 and more than 130 of the S&P 500 slated to report their results.  The numbers could well be the fodder for the next rally – or a downward spiral – even as a call for a 10-15% correction has gone unmet.  This morning's lengthy list of key corporate results, however, continues to surprise on the upside, adding fuel to the rally's fire.

On Monday, the S&P 500 broke above the 1100 mark before retreating a little to settle at 1097, its highest close since October 2, 2008. All ten industry sectors rose, led by gains in basic materials (+1.7%), utilities (+1.4%), oil and gas (+1.2%) and consumer services (+1.2%). 

Caterpillar (NYSE:CAT), due to report its earnings today, led the gainers with a 6% jump as analysts upgraded shares of Bank of America (NYSE:BAC) and RBC Capital that took price targets on the stock to $65 per share.  American Express (NYSE:AXP), due to report after the close Thursday, climbed 2.3% after FBR lifted its price target on the firm to $37 from $25.  On the downside, General Electric (NYSE:GE) shares fell 1.5% as questions continued regarding the price of the 20% stake Vivendi owns in NBC Universal.

Today's market action will be interesting to watch to find how the better-than-expected results from Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) and Texas Instruments (NYSE:TXN) are seen by the broader indices.  Both companies posted strong results, beating top and bottom line expectations. Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) said results were helped by record quarterly sales of Macintosh computers and iPhones, permitting earnings of $1.82 on strong sales of $9.87 billion.  The shares hit an all-time high of $204.  TI (NYSE:TXN) also bettered projections, reporting strong demand across all business segments.  The company reported earnings of 42 cents a share, ahead of estimates of 39 cents, as revenues of $2.88 billion beat estimates of $2.82 billion, and presented a sequential quarterly gain of 17%.

Raising Price Target on Apple

Apple Inc. (AAPL) sold 5.2 million iPhones in the June quarter, representing a 626.0% unit growth over the year-ago quarter. In the current quarter the company released Snow Leopard, the latest upgrade to Apple's OS X operating system. In addition, Apple announced new upgrades to its iPod digital media players. We continue to believe that Apple will outperform its peers given its strong iPhone sales and new product launches.

The company is currently benefiting from a positive mix shift to the higher-margin iPhones and iPod business from its traditional MP3 players, as a result of which management posted non-GAAP gross margin of 41.3% in the last quarter. We expect the company to post higher margins as a result of higher sales and the continued mix shift in the next several quarters.

However, Apple faces significant competition in all areas of its business from Microsoft (MSFT), Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), Research In Motion (RIMM) and Palm (PALM).

Nokia Enters Netbook Market

Nokia Corp. (NOK) yesterday announced its sales and distribution plan for its first netbook called “Booklet 3G". The U.S. retailer Best Buy Co. Inc. (BBY) will sell this netbook (mini laptop) for $299.99 together with AT&T’s (T) 3G data plan of $60 per month for a two-year contract. Dell to Try Smartphone

Dell Inc. (DELL) is planning to enter the smartphone business. The renowned personal computer (PC) manufacturer is planning to launch a smartphone, which will run on Google’s (GOOG) Android mobile software and will be connected through telecom giant AT&T’s (T) network. We believe that Dell is following the footprint of another computer maker, Apple Inc. (AAPL), whose flagship smartphone iPhone generated substantial business for the company.

Rumor has it that Dell could launch the phone as soon as early 2010.

VZ & Google Seal Android Pact

Verizon (VZ) reportedly partnered with search engine giant Google (GOOG) to develop and market mobile devices and applications based on the Android wireless software platform. Android-based mobile handsets developed through this collaboration will be available on Verizon’s high-speed wireless network. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed by the companies.

Verizon, the largest wireless carrier in the U.S., is expected to launch two android smartphones in the coming weeks. Plans are also in place to roll out other Android devices including PDAs and netbooks in future.

Under the multi-year agreement, the companies will pool substaintial resources to jointly develop a family of Android devices that will incorporate innovative mobile applications and feature Google Voice (Internet voice service). The products and services will be marketed leveraging Verizon’s nationwide distribution network and will be available for sale in the carrier’s retail and on-line stores.

Android-based mobile phones have emerged as the biggest challenger to Apple Inc’s (AAPL) iPhone. Android smartphones are currently marketed in the U.S. by Deutsche Telecom’s (DT) subsidiary T-mobile USA and will also be available on Sprint’s (S) network soon. By leveraging Verizon’s vast nationwide 3G network coverage and addessable customer base of 87.7 million, Android phones are expected to make a big impact in the intensely competitive U.S. smartphone market.

LTE Leading the Next Generation

Long-Term Evolution (LTE) technology is ahead in the race to be the most sought-after next-generation (4G) wireless network standard in the market. The 4G wireless networks are aiming to cope with substantial demand for high-speed wireless data services and mobile video.

The growing acceptance of LTE technology has prompted the mobile handset makers to develop phones that will be compatible with this network. Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM), one of the key developers of OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access) based chipsets has decided to introduce the trial version of LTE-compatible chipsets during the fourth quarter of 2009.

Industry sources predicted that the first LTE handsets may arrive on the market in the second half of 2010, but these next-generation smart-phones may to go mass market by early 2012. NTT DoCoMo (DCM) will launch LTE handsets in 2011 compatible with its current 3G network, enabling the customers to access services even if they are outside an LTE coverage area.

LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics on the other hand have already given a demonstration of LTE-based modems. LTE is expected to achieve download transmission speeds of 300Mbps and offers several advantages over other wireless techniques.

Rumors within the broadband industry are suggestive of an expected deal between the iPhone maker Apple Inc. (AAPL) and Verizon Wireless (VZ) to introduce a new LTE-compatible iPhone. Nokia Corp. (NOK), the largest mobile phone developer in the world, has also entered the race and is expected to launch LTE-based mobile handsets by 2011.

The second-largest US carrier will be the exclusive distributor of the device (called “nuvifone G60") in the US starting Oct 4, 2009. This will end a more than year-and-a-half delay in the device's US market launch, and also marks Garmin's first foray into the US smartphone market.

The touch-screen based nuvifone G60 will be sold at AT&T's stores and online for $299, after a $100 rebate and with a two-year service contract. While access to GPS service will be free, customers can enjoy premium value-added services, including real-time traffic updates, weather, movies and local events for a monthly payment of $5.99.

The nuvifone G60, which is positioned as a high-end phone, is distinct from other competing smartphones with GPS technology as it is equipped with full capabilities of a satellite navigator. In addition to its extended local search capabilities, the device is preloaded with North American maps and millions of locations of interest. It also has a touch-screen keyboard, web browser and 3-megapixel camera. Moreover, it can be mounted in a car for use as a navigation unit.

AT&T is the exclusive carrier for Apple Inc.'s (AAPL) iPhone in the US and is currently enjoying healthy subscriber activations due to the newly-launched iPhone 3GS. The nuvifone G60 represents another major business opportunity for the carrier, which is expected to bring in meaningful revenue streams. The device will leverage AT&T's industry leading Wi-Fi (wireless broadband) footprint and the nation's fastest 3G network, addressing the company's 79.6 million wireless subscribers.

While nuvifone G60 represents a promising prospect, the device's very high-end pricing structure may turn out to be a limiting factor, given the presence of comparatively cheaper alternatives with GPS capability, such as Palm's (PALM) Pre and the iPhone.

The company formed a joint venture with Singapore Telecommunications Ltd. to build ST-2 telecommunications satellite network. Mitsubishi Electric Corp. and Integral Systems Inc. (ISYS) will install satellite ground system for the ST-2 program.

Chunghwa has also entered into a joint venture with Viettel Corp to provide Internet Data Center services in Vietnam.

So-net Entertainment Corp of Japan formed an operational venture with Chunghwa to expand its Internet services. The company will acquire 30% stake of So-net for total consideration of Japanese Yen 170 million.

Chunghwa, China Unicom Ltd. (CHU) and Japan’s KDDI Corp. have decided to jointly build an undersea cable network called APCN3 for a total consideration of $ 500 million.

Along with these initiatives, Chunghwa has taken lot of other measures to improve sales. The company has started selling Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) 3G iPhone in Taiwan and entered an agreement with Warner Music Taiwan to pursue opportunities in the digital music market.

Going forward, we expect fierce competition as Chinese giant China Mobile Ltd. (CHL) has acquired a 12% stake in Chunghwa’s prime rival Far EasTone Telecommunications. In view of these competitive pressures, we believe geographical expansion and product innovation initiatives were crucial steps taken by Chunghwa’s management.

The fund normally invests in equity investments of companies that are well positioned to benefit from the proliferation of technology. It may invest up to 25% of assets in foreign securities, including securities of issuers in emerging markets.

Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), Apple Inc. (AAPL) and American Tower Corp. (AMT) are among the fund's top holdings.

Goldman Sachs Growth & Income (GOIIX) seeks long-term capital appreciation and current income.

The fund invests approximately 60% of total assets in underlying equity funds. It may invest a relatively significant percentage of equity allocation in the structured large-cap growth, value and international equity funds.

Katinka Domotorffy has been lead manager at the fund since December 2001. It has an expense ratio of 0.19%.

Goldman Sachs Emerging Markets Equity A (GEMAX) seeks long-term capital appreciation by primarily investing in equity securities of issuers in emerging countries.

The fund invests in at least six emerging countries, and does not invest more than 35% of assets in securities of issuers in any one emerging country. It may also invest in fixed-income securities of private and government emerging country issuers.

Apple had earlier approved iCall, FriendCaller, Nimbuzz, Skype and Spotify app for its devices and now Vonage has been added to Apple’s App store.
 
All of these VoIP services use WiFi services to make calls. The apps that compete with Apple’s own services had been rejected earlier. However, Apple allowed VoIP apps that can work over WiFi only.
 
We believe that Apple will be benefited from the strong position of Vonage in the VoIP industry but we remain unsure about how different Vonage services will be from other app providers.
 
Carriers like Vonage provide services that are much cheaper than most traditional phone plans particularly for long distant calls, as a result of which consumers frequently change their preferences. Thus, it will be interesting to see how many new customers the Vonage service will be able to get for Apple.
 
Earlier, Apple rejected the Google (GOOG) Voice application from its app store, which is now subjected to an ongoing investigation by the FCC. Apple said that AT&T (T) in the U.S. bars it from allowing a customer to use AT&T's mobile network without explicit permission. This is due to stringent policies from AT&T, Apple’s exclusive carrier that blocks VoIP on 3G network due to quality issues.
 
AT&T would not want further competition from these service providers and may disapprove Vonage’s iPhone app to work over AT&T’s mobile network.
 
While we have several concerns over Apple’s new approval, shares of Vonage jumped approximately 40% after it received approval from Apple.

Apple Inc. (AAPL) is expected to unveil a new line up of iPod portable music players for the holiday period when it will hold a special media event in San Francisco on Sept 9. Apple declined to name the products.

It is widely believed that Apple will use the event to announce major updates to the iPod Touch, the classic iPod and the iPod Nano. The upgrades could include adding a digital camera to the devices, while the iPod Touch could also be augmented with a video camera. No updates to iPod Shuffle are expected.

Apple is also expected to provide an update to the iTunes media management software at the event. Rumor has it that Steve Jobs may appear for the first time at the event after he returned to Apple from his temporary leave of absence.

Apple’s resurgence has been driven by the tremendous success of its iPod portable music and video players and iTunes online store. Apple unveiled the iPod nano in 2005, which was followed by the launch of iPod Touch in 2007. Apple’s iPod remains popular, as evident from the 6% increase in unit shipments to 54.8 million in fiscal 2008 compared to 2007.

However, growth in the digital music player market may slow down as the core market becomes saturated. Apple suffered declining year-over-year sales of its iPods in the first nine months of 2009 as demand fell due to global recession. The company could sell only 44.1 million iPods during the first nine months of 2009. iPod revenues were down 13.0%.

Apple faces significant competition from Palm (PALM), Nokia (NOK), Motorola (MOT) and Research in Motion (RIMM) in all areas of its business.

CHL Launches Ophone OS Platform

China Mobile (CHL) has reportedly launched its self-developed smartphone operating system platform today, known as the Open Mobile System (OMS). The Chinese wireless giant has also launched a line of handset models (called Ophones) based on its home-grown TD-SCDMA 3G wireless technology.

OMS is being developed by China Mobile leveraging Google’s (GOOG) open-source Android mobile operating system. This new software plaform is expected to drive the development of TD-SCDMA technology based cellular handsets.

Ophones, which operate on the OMS plaform, represents China Mobile’s response to the emerging threat from Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPhones. The company’s biggest rival, China Unicom (CHU), has reportedly sealed a three-year agreement with Apple to exclusively market the iPhone 3G in China through subsidized price plans. This has placed China Unicom in a strong position to drive its 3G subscriber count.

In order to facilitate the development and roll-out of Ophones, China Mobile has collaborated with leading international vendors such as Dell (DELL), LG, Lenovo, HTC and Samsung. More than 20 handset manufacturers are currently helping the company to expedite the development of its propritary wireless handset.

Before we begin, let's explain the contrarian stance that makes Schaeffer's so unique. When searching for a bullish pick, we like to see heavy skepticism toward an outperforming stock, as this leaves ample room for upgrades or other positive catalysts to fuel the stock higher. When searching for a bearish pick, on the other hand, contrarians are looking for significant bullish sentiment toward an underperforming stock, as we believe an excess of optimism is a sign that everyone has already bought into the stock and sideline money is virtually tapped out.

However, keep in mind that some optimism and pessimism is genuinely warranted and isn't always a contrarian indicator - like an outperforming stock with many "buy" ratings or an underperforming stock with a plethora of "sell" ratings.

In the News

According to the Zacks screener, VZ saw a significant pop in put volume on Thursday. More specifically, the equity saw roughly 12,600 puts cross the tape, more than doubling its average daily volume of about 5,800 bearishly-oriented contracts.

Sparking the preference for puts may have been a double dose of negative headlines. Ahead of the bell Thursday, TiVo Inc. (TIVO) announced that it filed a patent lawsuit against Verizon and AT&T (T) regarding their use of digital video recorders (DVRs) and "time-warping" technology.

Later, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) launched an investigation into the "innovation" of the wireless industry". The news prompted widespread concerns regarding potential government restrictions in the future, such as capping rates that wireless companies charge one another to roam, and limiting consumers' carrier choices for smartphones like Palm Inc.'s (PALM) Pre and Apple Inc.'s (AAPL) iPhone.

Digging deeper into the put activity; however, it appears that not all of the volume can be attributed to the bears.

Predicting a Price Swing

Most popular was VZ's at-the-money Sep 31 put, which saw more than 3,000 contracts change hands. At 10:05 a.m. Eastern time, two blocks totaling 250 contracts traded at the ask price of $0.63, suggesting they were bought. At the same time, an equal amount of Sep 31 calls traded at the ask price of $0.66, implying they were also purchased. As such, it seems we've detected a long straddle on VZ - indicating that at least one investor is anticipating a monster move on the charts in the near term.

By adding the premium paid for the options, we find that the position was established for a net debit of $1.29 ($0.63 + $0.66), which also represents the most the strategist can possibly lose on the play. In order to avoid a loss, however, the investor needs the shares of VZ to power through one of two levels by expiration: $29.71 (strike - net debit) or $32.29 (strike + net debit).

On the Charts

Technically speaking, shares of VZ have been less than impressive lately, surrendering 8.4% since the start of 2009. In fact, compared to the broad market, the communications concern has underperformed the S&P 500 Index (SPX) by 11% during the past 40 trading sessions.

The equity is now attempting to maintain its newfound foothold atop its 10-month moving average, lingering in the $31 region. However, any rally attempts could be contained by the stock's 20-month moving average, hovering just overhead. Both of these trendlines have acted as staunch long-term resistance, as VZ hasn't closed a month north of this duo since late 2007.

In conclusion, VZ's technical barriers don't bode well for the aforementioned long straddler, as the goal of the strategy is for the shares to make a mammoth move in the near term. The prospects for a move lower appear much greater, though, considering any treks into the black could be capped by the stock's 20-month trendline. While a pullback would still make money for the long straddle strategist, a significant rally would be even better, as potential profit is theoretically unlimited if the stock shoots higher.

Zacks Investment Research

This 3G handset will have a high-resolution WVGA touch screen and incorporate a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. It will be available in select markets from October for 500 Euros.

Traditionally, all Nokia handsets have used the Symbian operating system, which is now fully controlled by Nokia. However, the Symbian system has lost charm for mobile phone users and become outdated compared to open source operating systems like Linux, Google Inc.’s (GOOG) Android and the licensed system of Microsoft Corp.’s (MSFT) Windows Mobile. A wireless handset based on the Maeme 5 operating system will allow users to run more than a dozen application windows at the same time.

N900 will have multitasking feature for applications together with web browsing (Mozilla-based Internet browser) that will support Adobe System Inc.’s (ADBE) flash software. This smart-phone will have ARM Cortex-A8 processor and 1GB of application memory. N900 also contains a 5-megapixel camera and 32GB of storage facility. Storage capacity will be expandable up to 48GB through a microSD memory card.

Nokia is the world leader in the high-end smartphone market but the company has been losing ground to fierce competition in recent times. According to Gartner Inc, Nokia’s share fell to 45% in the second quarter from 47.5% in the year-ago period. Meanwhile, Research In Motion (RIMM) grew its market share to 18.7% from 17.3% in the year-ago quarter and Apple Inc. (AAPL) gained 13.3% from a mere 2.8% in the prior-year quarter.

Nokia’s adoption of the Linux-based operating system is aimed to protect its leadership position in the smartphone market. Earlier this month, the company signed a deal with its former arch rival Microsoft Corp., to incorporate the mobile version of MS-Office software suite in Nokia handsets.

Motorola announced that its two new 3G handsets will feature an intuitive user interface and an efficient combination of Internet access, messaging, and multi-media applications based on the Android software ecosystem. Currently, more than 6,000 multimedia and social networking applications are available based on the Android ecosystem. Motorola is trying hard to expand this platform using its proprietary MOTODEV program. Management also declared that another 30 3G high-end mobile handset models are in the offing during fiscal 2010.

Motorola thoroughly revamped its critical Mobile Device segment. During the first half of fiscal 2009, management reduced its headcount by more than 8,000. Most of this reduction took place in the Mobile Device segment. As a result, operating expenses during this period were reduced by over $1 billion year-on-year. Going forward, management revised its guidance stating that the company will reduce its operating expenses by $1.8 billion in fiscal 2009 compared to the previous fiscal. Out of $1.8 billion, the Mobile Device segment alone will save $1.4 billion of operating costs.

Recently, Motorola entered into an agreement with Blockbuster Inc. (BBI) to offer mobile video entertainment to its customers. Users will be able to watch any movie/video games or can download the same on his/her handset that are available in the Blockbuster video library. Partnership with Blockbuster will give Motorola a competitive foothold compared to Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) legendary iPhone that offers movie download facilities through Apple’s own iTunes movie store.

Research In Motion (RIMM) yesterday announced that it acquired Torch Mobile, a web-based software and application developer. Torch Mobile uses the open-source web browser layout engine WebKit to develop web applications for mobile phones. The company’s flagship Iris Browser product is a web browser for mobile phones with a customizable interface and touch-screen control. Iris browser can be used on many devices and platforms. The browser contains software components for web services compatible with Google (GOOG) gadgets, Yahoo (YHOO) widgets, and several other web platforms.

RIMM has been able to successfully differentiate its BlackBerry products from other offerings in the communications market. BlackBerry smart-phones are admired globally for their best e-mail functionality. However, its web browsing capability is not as powerful as iPhone of Apple Inc. (AAPL), Pre of Palm Inc. (PALM) and Google Android. All of these browsers are based on the WebKit ecosystem. In order to remain competitive, RIMM has decided to strengthen its browser that will be able to support Flash and Silverlight Technologies.

China Mobile Goes for “Ophones"

China Mobile (CHL) has reportedly entered into a strategic agreement with Taiwan-based High Tech Computer Corp (commonly known as HTC) today to jointly develop 3G smartphones in China. The joint-venture will design and develop handset models (called "Ophones") based on China Mobile’s home-grown TD-SCDMA 3G technology. The agreement also covers the development of TD-LTE, a 4G mobile broadband technology based network.

HTC, the world’s largest maker of handsets based on Microsoft’s (MSFT) Windows Mobile platform, will develop and supply at least seven 3G handset models by 2010 (including one in 2009). On the other hand, China Mobile will invest RMB47 million ($6.9 million) in the joint-venture and will provide customer service and support. This strategic collaboration will significantly help China Mobile to promote its TD-SCDMA technology in the nascent domestic 3G wireless market.

China Mobile is also exploring opportunities for technology collaboration with other Taiwanese companies such as Chunghwa Telecom (CHT) and MediaTek Inc. Moreover, the company aims to acquire a 12% stake in Far EasTone Telecommunications, Taiwan's third-largest mobile-phone operator by revenue, for approximately $529 million. This strategic investment will open up an opportunity for network and technology synergies as Far EasTone also plans to develop 3G TD-SCDMA based network.

In addition to the expansion of its 3G TD-SCDMA network, China Mobile is increasingly focusing on developing 3G smartphones to counter competition from Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iPhones. The company’s closest competitor, China Unicom (CHU), is currently negotiating with Apple to bring iPhones to China, potentially in 2009. China Mobile hopes its relatively low-priced smartphones will drive demand for 3G services in China and boost associated subscriber growth.
