Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (TEVA) reported earnings of 89 cents in the third quarter of 2009, up 16% from the year-ago period and a cent above the Zacks Consensus Estimate. Strong sales of Copaxone and in the respiratory business helped drive earnings in the reported quarter. Net sales increased 25% to $3.55 billion, with the Barr acquisition contributing to sales across different geographical segments. The strengthening U.S. dollar adversely impacted net sales by $160 million or 6%. Revenue performance across key business segments was mixed. Axial Vector Energy Corp., developer of advanced, high-efficiency energy engines, has access to two important fuel purification technologies associated with Petrosonics LLC, the privately held development stage oil refining technology company that is part of the PETROAVEC joint venture between Axial Vector and Petrosonics.

The first technology uses ultrasound at moderate temperature and atmospheric pressure to reduce sulfur and nitrogen in processed diesel. This is important because there is worldwide legislation aimed at decreasing sulfur emissions to zero, including emissions from off-road use such as marine and locomotive. There is also a shift in demand from gasoline to diesel. Hydrotreatment, the current technology, is not cost effective for mid to small sized refineries, and there is not enough capacity for increasing demand. Axial Vector Energy Corp. announced that its PETRO AVEC JV partner, Petrosonics LLC, has been awarded a patent in Indonesia that protects the process of removing sulfur from all types of crude oil fractions through sonic energy, oxidation and the removal of all of the oxidized sulfur through hydrotreatment. The patent will remain effective for 20 years.

According to the Oil & Gas Journal, Indonesia had 4.3 billion barrels of proven oil reserves as of January 2007. Although Indonesian crude oils vary widely in quality, most streams have gravities in the 22 to 37 degrees API range. Indonesia’s two main export crudes are Sumatra Light, or Minas, with a 35 API gravity, and the heavier, 22 API Duri crude.

Oil prices fell below $69 a barrel on Tuesday as economic concerns sent investors into safer havens, outweighing positive U.S. manufacturing and home sales data.

U.S. crude for October delivery fell $1.39 to $68.57 a barrel by 1:32 p.m. EDT (1732 GMT).

London Brent crude dropped $1.38 to $68.27.

U.S. stocks dropped as investors’ confidence in the economic recovery wavered.

“The dollar is strengthening and equities are coming off hard so (oil futures) did the same,” said Tom Knight, trader at Truman Arnold in Texarkana, Texas.

Meanwhile, the U.S. dollar rose as the slide in the U.S. stocks boosted the currency’s safe-haven appeal.

Oil futures had risen earlier in the day as the market focused on a report showing a jump in U.S. manufacturing and pending home sales.

“It looks like the whole complex is failing to sustain the gains … basically, the market’s not done yet on the downside,” said Tom Bentz, senior commodity analyst, BNP Paribas Commodity

Recently, I had the unique opportunity to tour two different oil sands operations near Fort McMurray, in northern Alberta. I saw a massive open-pit oil sands mine, and the associated reclamation effort, operated by Syncrude Canada Ltd. I also visited an in situ oil sands recovery project called Surmont, operated by ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP).

The trip was sponsored by the American Petroleum Institute (API), which paid for the airfare and accommodations. Managers at both Syncrude and ConocoPhillips granted me access to any parts of their operations I wanted to see (within allowances for safety). And everyone answered any and all questions I asked.

The Past and Future of Oil and Oil Sands

A couple of weeks ago I was in Fort McMurray, Alberta.  I was visiting two large oil sands operations, courtesy of Conoco Phillips (NYSE:COP), Syncrude Canada and the American Petroleum Institute, which sponsored the trip.  I’ve been all over the place, but never to a working oil sands operation.  This was a first for me, and quite an eye-opener.

What Are These Oil Sands?

Back in Pleistocene time, the glaciers covered much of northern Alberta.  In places, there was a mile of ice.  During some of the warmer periods, there was a lot of melting.  On occasion, and in some places, there were giant, glacial-dammed lakes.
