Who Got The Power?

Robert Amsterdam (November 12th, 2009) Writes:
igor-sechin.jpgVladimir Putin has been ranked number 3 in the Forbes list of the most powerful people in the world, President Medvedev comes in 43rd, after Deputy Prime Minister, siloviki chieftain and Rosneft chairman Igor Sechin at number 42. (See the editor's choice for Russia's top seven.) Forbes has got a special feature on the politician the Russian press apparently call 'the scariest person on earth'. There is little solid information about the man. Like many of Putin's cronies, Sechin is a St. Petersburg native. In the 1990s he worked in city government. Before that, it's widely believed he was a spy; Moscow sources confirm that he was a member of the GRU, the KGB's foreign-intelligence arm. ...

Marathon Sells Offshore Fields – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 6th, 2009) Writes:
Marathon Oil Corporation (MRO) on Friday announced the sale of its wholly owned subsidiary, Marathon Oil Gabon Ltd. (having a 56.25% interest in three offshore production fields) to London-based independent Perenco.  The oilfields are Tchatamba Marin, Tchatamba South and Tchatamba West fields, with a combined gross production of approximately 15,000 barrels of oil per day.  Marathon has been strategically divesting assets during the last few months. These include the sale of a 20% participating interest in Angola Block 32, all of Marathon’s holdings in Ireland , interests in Heimdal area offshore Norway and interests in the Permian Basin in Texas and New Mexico.  These sales are part of the company's $2 billion to $4 billion asset divestiture program announced in March 2008. Marathon’s upstream activities are located in 11 countries, including the U.S., Canada , U.K. , Norway , Equatorial Guinea , Angola , and ...

Acergy Scores in Angola – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (September 23rd, 2009) Writes:
Yesterday, Acergy (ACGY) said it won a contract worth about $110 million from Total (TOT) E&P Angola and BP Angola (Block 18) B.V. The deal involves the installation of over 70 kilometers of 24-inch pipeline from Block 2, together with related jumpers, PLET and tie-ins to the near-shore/onshore pipeline in water depths up to 40 meters.

While the engineering work will begin immediately, offshore installation is scheduled to start in the second quarter of 2010. The company will use Acergy Hawk and Acergy Legend for construction support and rigid pipelay asset Acergy Polaris for this contract.

The contract reflects Acergy’s strong presence in Angola. In 2008, the company won a $250 million deal from Angola LNG Ltd. for the development of a pipeline network. Eralier in 2007, it had successfully completed the Greater Plutonio project in deepwater offshore Angola.

We believe that Acergy remains well positioned to

Peak Oil and Petrobras

Investment U (September 21st, 2009) Writes:

Peak Oil and Petrobras

Tony Daltorio, Investment U Research

Back on Wednesday, September 9, I wrote on how to profit from British Petroleum ADR (NYSE: BP)’s huge discovery in the Gulf of Mexico, and how to profit from peak oil.

And while I stand by the profitability of both that find and stock, I think I should clarify that “peak oil” really doesn’t exist anymore. So instead, let’s call it peak-cheap-and-easily-recoverable-oil instead, since that seems much more appropriate.

The days of cheap and accessible oil are long gone, but that very fact opens up rich opportunities for investors who face up to the realities of today’s oil market.

Possibly the biggest reality comes down to this: Giant oil fields are the industry’s lifeblood. Out of the world’s 70,000 oil fields, the largest twenty account for a quarter of global production.

That’s

BP: British Petroleum. Big Profits

Investment U (September 9th, 2009) Writes:

BP: British Petroleum. Big Profits

by Tony Daltorio, the Investment U Research Team

Not too long ago, seven major oil companies – commonly referred to as the Seven Sisters – controlled their market.

But that was then and this is now. Today, they’re scrambling to find new oil fields, while “smaller” companies rock the industry.

That’s why there’s been so much excitement over the recent discovery of a ‘giant’ oil field in the Gulf of Mexico by one of the Seven Sisters, British Petroleum ADR (NYSE: BP).

When international oil companies consider where to invest, they typically have to choose between technically straightforward fields in politically turbulent countries, or politically stable areas that require complex and costly production techniques.

Easily produced, accessible energy resources in secure countries just don’t exist anymore; the era of cheap oil is truly over.

But BP has a long history

Sechin as Russia’s New Viktor Bout?

Robert Amsterdam (August 20th, 2009) Writes:
viktorbout091909.jpgDid you know that Igor Sechin allegedly worked with the famous arms dealer Viktor Bout back in Mozambique in the 1980s?  Neither did I, but you probably already know we have been watching all these orders coming for more Russian tanks from Venezuela's Hugo Chavez while at the same time more and more FARC links to Caracas are surfacing.  It's just so strange to think that the key individual who somehow allegedly ties together Russian weapons to the Venezuelans and then onward to FARC is in a Thai jail, where, apparently, the authorities are under the impression that FARC is not even a terrorist organization but rather a political party.  According to this editorial in the Washington Post, the ...

Today in Russian Business – August 20, 2009

Robert Amsterdam (August 20th, 2009) Writes:
The Interior Ministry's $755,900 tender for luxury furniture including a 24-carat gold painted bed has raised outcry among ordinary Russians losing sleep over money worries.  The bond is apparently part of a cost-crunching drive, to save money on hotels when foreign officials come to stay.  Aeroflot has become a Tier One sponsor of the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, having signed a $100 million deal with the Black Sea city.  Diamond giant Alrosa will invest $500 million for developing homes, schools, and dams in Angola, where it has two mines.  The Finance Ministry has suggested that its plan to sell $58.5 billion of bonds in the next three years may be hindered by competition between the state and the private sector. Germany's economy ministry is reportedly prepared to make €4.5 billion in credit available to Magna-Sberbank to ...

Hot Stocks: With an Emerging Markets Foray, Molson and SABMiller Quench Their Thirst For Global Growth

Jason Simpkins (August 12th, 2009) Writes:

Obscure Law Forces Companies to Come Clean on Gold Mandatory government filing NI 43-101 required gold mining companies in Canada to disclose how much gold they really have. This one company’s filing just revealed that it’s sitting on the 7th largest gold strike in North American history. Few know about this yet. And for a short time, savvy investors will be able to buy gold for 17 cents on the dollar. Read the full report.

With sales volume plunging in Western markets, Molson Coors Brewing Co. (NYSE: TAP) and SABMiller PLC (OTC ADR: SBMRY) are tapping into emerging markets for refreshing growth.

SABMiller, for instance, saw beer sales slump 7% in Europe and 0.8% in the United States, while Africa and Asia combined for 11% sales growth. Sales in China alone soared 17% in the quarter.

With an Emerging Markets Foray, Molson and SABMiller Quench Their Thirst for Global Growth

Contrarian Profits (August 11th, 2009) Writes:

With sales volume plunging in Western markets, Molson Coors Brewing Co. (NYSE: TAP) and SABMiller PLC (OTC ADR: SBMRY) are tapping into emerging markets for refreshing growth.

SABMiller, for instance, saw beer sales slump 7% in Europe and 0.8% in the United States, while Africa and Asia combined for 11% sales growth. Sales in China alone soared 17% in the quarter.

While demand in Europe has dropped sharply, countries in emerging markets such as Africa and Asia have fared relatively well despite falling back from the high - one might say unsustainable rates of growth of recent years,” said SABMiller Chairman Meyer Kahn.

As a percentage of commercially produced alcohol, beer now accounts for 49.0% of the market in Africa and 32.8% in Asia, Meyer said.

In China, SABMiller’s success is largely attributable to the popularity of a Chinese beer named Snow, which recently supplanted Bud Light as
