ANADIGICS, Inc. (ANAD) reported revenues of $41.8 million in the fourth quarter of 2009, down 7.6% from a year ago but up 13.9% sequentially and surpassed management’s revenue growth guidance of 5% – 8%.

The growth in revenues came from higher-than-expected shipments in each of the main product categories of wideband CDMA, wireless LAN, WiMAX, and cable products.

Wireless revenues came in at $24.9 million, down 5.7% sequentially. Broadband revenues came in at $16.9 million, up 64.4% sequentially and were better than management’s expectations. Within broadband, wireless LAN revenue was $5.7 million, up 90% sequentially. Cable Television (CATV) revenue was $9.9 million, an increase of 46% sequentially and WiMAX revenue came in at $1.3 million.

The top customers for the company included Research in Motion Limited (RIMM), Intel Corporation (INTC), LG, Richardson Electronics Ltd (RELL), Motorola Inc. (MOT), Cisco Systems Inc (CSCO), and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.

LG and RIMM each generated more than 10% of total revenues in 2009. ANADIGICS was also able to win back lost market share at Samsung which it had lost in 2008. Samsung was a 10% customer in the second and third quarter of 2009 and continues to be strong in the first quarter of 2010 as well.

Gross margin came in at 29.1%, up 470 basis points sequentially. The increase in gross profit was driven by better-than-expected product yields, lower direct material costs, and better overall product margins from increased revenue. The increase was partially offset by the negative impact of a planned two-week fab shutdown at the end of the quarter.

Net loss came in at $3.2 million or 5 cents per share, much lower than the Zacks Consensus of 14 cents and management’s guidance of a loss of 8 to 10 cents. The lower loss was due to higher revenues and gross margin which positively impacted the bottom-line.

During the quarter, ANADIGICS generated $4.6 million of cash from operations and used $0.8 million in capital expenditures. As of December 31, 2009, cash and equivalents totaled $83.1 million.

Revenue for the year ended 2009 was $140.5 million, down 45.6% from 2008. Net loss per share came in at 54 cents.

Going forward, management stated that the company continues to see strong bookings in the quarter in the wireless product line. Hence, wireless revenue is expected to grow by approximately 20% sequentially. This growth is expected to offset a previously-expected decline in wireless LAN revenue.

Management expects net sales of $41.8 million in the first quarter of 2010. Gross margin is projected around 29% – 30%. Net loss per share is forecasted around 5 – 6 cents.

Headquartered in Warren, New Jersey, ANADIGICS designs and manufactures semiconductor solutions for the broadband wireless and wireline communications markets.

Novatel Wireless Inc. (NVTL) strengthens technical features of its industry leading Ovation series of USB data modems. In the first half of January, the company launched its Ovation MC996D High-Speed USB Data Modem for HSPA+ mobile broadband network. HSPA+ is the next evolution of high-speed packet access (HSPA) wireless broadband technology with greater capacity for data throughput compared to standard 3G networks. HSPA+ systems offer data rates from 14.4 Mbps to 28 Mbps with the potential to achieve data rates of 42 Mbps on a 5MHz carrier. MC996D was introduced by Telefonica SA (TEF) of Spain.

Novatel selected WCDMA/HSPA and EDGE power amplifiers of ANADIGICS Inc. (ANAD) for its Ovation MC996D and MC998D wireless broadband USB modems. ANADIGICS is a leading provider of innovative RF solutions for broadband wireless communications. Both MC996D and MC998D USB data access products facilitate laptop, PC, and notebook users upload speeds as high as 5.76 Mbps and download speeds of 21.6 Mbps or higher on HSPA+ networks.

According to Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA), there were 315 WCDMA networks in operation throughout the world, at the end of 2009. Out of these, 303 networks also offered HSPA service with subscribers’ data rates of 3.6 Mbps or higher. The GSA confirmed 37 commercial HSPA+ networks in service at the end of 2009. Another 29 operators around the world will deploy HSPA+ in 2010 or 2011.

Recently, Novatel successfully completed the first data transmission over dual-carrier HSPA+ using Qualcomm Inc's (QCOM) industry-leading MDM8220 (Gobi) chipset. Dual-carrier HSPA+ will deliver more advanced data capabilities and support more compelling applications. Novatel has decided to launch its first dual-carrier HSPA+ data access product based on MDM8220 in the second half of 2010. This product is likely to support data speed of 42 Mbps.
Read the full analyst report on "NVTL"
Read the full analyst report on "TEF"
Read the full analyst report on "ANAD"
Read the full analyst report on "QCOM"
Zacks Investment Research

Here are highlights from Friday’s Analyst Blog:

TriQuint Upgrades Guidance

TriQuint Semiconductor, Inc. (TQNT) reported preliminary results for the fourth quarter of 2009.

The company now expects revenues of around $190 million, up from the previous guidance of $175 million to $185 million. The increase in guidance has been primarily due to increased demand during the holiday season.

In October, management had warned that a Korean handset manufacturer was making a material adjustment in its demand to bring down excess inventory, which in turn would impair demand in the fourth quarter.

Earnings per share (EPS) is now projected in the range of 12 cents to 13 cents, up from the earlier forecast of 10 cents to 12 cents.

For the first quarter of 2010, management estimates revenues to decline by 10% – 15% due to seasonal fluctuations in demand. However, revenue growth is expected to be strong in 2010.

With the economy showing signs of recovery, we expect capital spending to pick up in 2010. TriQuint foresees sustained demand for handset and defense products along with an eventual recovery in the networks market. The company is all set to benefit from China’s investment in 3G infrastructure, which more than offsets lower infrastructure spending in other regions. Management continues to see solid adoption of its 3G products in multi-band smart phones.

TriQuint is pitted against players such as Skyworks Solutions (SWKS), ANADIGICS Inc. (ANAD) and RF Micro Devices (RFMD). It remains to be seen how TriQuint fares and wins market share as the economy picks up. Based in Hillsborough, OR, TriQuint is an original equipment manufacturer of semiconductor communication integrated circuits and specifically targets the wireless handset segment, infrastructure networks and defense markets.

Canadian Solar’s Japanese JV

Canadian Solar Inc. (CSIQ) announced that it has formed a joint venture and an 18 MW distribution deal with West Holding Ltd of Japan. The agreement stipulates a transfer of 14% of the shares in Canadian Solar Japan − the Japanese subsidiary of Canadian Solar Inc. − to West Holding Ltd. Canadian Solar will retain the remaining 86% stake in its subsidiary. West Holding Ltd will distribute and sell solar residential rooftop systems designed by Canadian Solar Japan. The sales target for 2010 is approximately 18 MW.

West Holdings Corporation and its subsidiaries develop photovoltaic systems, all electric housing, and heat reflective paints in Japan and overseas.

Canadian Solar is a vertically integrated manufacturer of silicon ingots, wafers, cells, solar modules (panels) and custom-designed solar power applications. The company has seven manufacturing facilities located at Suzhou, Changshu and Luoyang in China. Canadian Solar has an annual capacity of approximately 120 MW to 150 MW of ingots and wafers, 270 MW of cells, and 820 MW of modules.

ANADIGICS Inc. (ANAD) recently reported revenues of $36.7 in the third quarter of 2009, down 36.8% year over year but up 16.7% sequentially. The reported revenue surpassed management guidance of revenue growth at 5%–10%.

The revenue growth was driven by a boost in the company’s 3G wireless products as well as an earlier than expected recovery in both cable TV and WLAN revenues. Cable set-top box products increased and wireless LAN products jumped 65% sequentially.

Gross margin improved significantly to 24.4% from 10.7% in the previous quarter primarily due to the increased revenue, higher factory utilization and improved yields. Operating expenses increased by $600,000 to $15 million from last quarter on higher R&D cost attributable to new products. Net loss per share came in at 10 cents better than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of 15 cents.

The company recently announced a foundry agreement with WIN Semiconductors. This foundry relationship is a key component of ANADIGICS' new hybrid manufacturing strategy, providing a mix of internal and external manufacturing capabilities. Management expects this to be fruitful in expanding production capabilities by the fourth quarter of 2010 ensuring fulfillment of future demand and ironing out of supply constraints.

In 2008, ANADIGICS lost significant market share (primarily at Samsung) as it was not able to meet increased demand from customers, which made them look for other sources of supply. This was mainly due to inefficiencies in manufacturing operations. The problem grew out of proportion due to the recent economic slowdown, leading to delays in orders by customers to reduce exposure to this economic slowdown.

Going forward, management expects revenues to grow by 5%–8% sequentially. The company plans a two-week shutdown at year-end and hence estimates factory utilization to be lower than that achieved in the third quarter. This will in turn negatively impact gross margins on a sequential basis. Net loss per share is projected between 8 cents and 10 cents.

Last week, rival TriQuint Semiconductors Inc. (TQNT) reported an in-line third quarter but provided a disappointing guidance primarily due to write down of excess inventory at Samsung, which is a key customer for ANADIGICS. Management seems to be working on issues which have been plaguing the company for the past 18 months – removing the inefficiencies in manufacturing operations and diversifying source of supply and key foundry partners. However, management need to convince wireless customers that they can rely on getting a consistent supply of ANADIGICS products, which are considered to be superior, along with regaining the lost market share at its key customer – Samsung. We maintain a Neutral rating on the stock before the picture becomes clearer.

ANADIGICS is headquartered in Warren, New Jersey. The company designs and manufactures semiconductor solutions for the broadband wireless and wire line communications market.
Read the full analyst report on "ANAD"
Read the full analyst report on "TQNT"
Zacks Investment Research

TriQuint Semiconductor Inc (TQNT) recently reported revenues of $173.0 million in the third quarter of 2009, down 7% year over year but up 2% sequentially.

The sequential revenue growth was broad-based and came from all end markets. In particular, network markets grew 13% sequentially, driven by the resurgence in demand after clearance of excess inventory in the WLAN market.

Gross margin improved to 35.0% from 33.2% in the previous quarter driven by improved factory utilization and efficient cost management.

Net income grew 37% sequentially to $15.7 million. Earnings per share came in at 7 cents, in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate.

As of September, the company had cash and equivalents of $134.6 million, an increase of $35.2 million from the previous quarter. TriQuint had no debt at the end of the quarter.

Going forward, management expects revenues between $175 million and $185 million in the fourth quarter of 2009 and stated that the company is already booked to the mid-point of revenue guidance. However, management warned that a Korean handset manufacturer (either Samsung or LG) is making a material adjustment in its demand to bring down excess inventory. This will impair demand from this customer in the coming quarter.

Gross margin is expected between 35% and 37%. Operating expenses are projected between $46 million and $48 million. EPS is anticipated between 10 cents and 12 cents. Cash is expected to grow by about $15 million.

TriQuint had signed an agreement with Huawei to supply driver amplifiers and related products for new optical transport systems. TriQuint will also work closely with Huawei to develop higher speed and wider bandwidth network solutions with lower power consumption for operators worldwide.

TriQuint Semiconductor has recently announced the acquisition of TriAccess Technologies. TriAccess is a leading provider of Cable TV and Fiber-to-the-Premise (FTTP) integrated circuits for the amplification of high-quality multimedia content.

With the economy showing signs of recovery, we expect capital spending to pick up in the second half of 2009.

Read the full analyst report on "TQNT"
Read the full analyst report on "ANAD"
Read the full analyst report on "RFMD"
Read the full analyst report on "SWKS"
Zacks Investment Research

Here are highlights from Monday’s Analyst Blog:

TriQuint Launches New Solutions

TriQuint (TQNT) recently announced that it would launch new solutions for cable systems, microwave radio and optical networks to enable network operators meet the growing demand for broadband services more efficiently and economically.

Management stated that network operators expect to see substantial increases in radio, optical and cable network traffic because of the growing popularity of home and mobile data applications. Operators are looking for cost effective ways to expand capacity while lowering operational expenses.

Radio products and cable infrastructure are expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10% through 2013. Fiber optic IC market CAGR is expected to double during this period and emerging 40Gb/s segment should lead growth with a projected 78% CAGR. Hence, TriQuint expects to place itself in a dominant position with new solutions to capitalize on the massive growth potential.

Based in Hillsboro, OR, TriQuint is an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of semiconductor communication integrated circuits (ICs) and specifically targets the wireless handset segment, infrastructure networks and defense markets.

TriQuint earlier signed an agreement with Huawei to supply driver amplifiers and related products for new optical transport systems. TriQuint will also work closely with Huawei to develop higher speed and wider bandwidth network solutions with lower power consumption for operators worldwide.

TriQuint Semiconductor recently announced the acquisition of TriAccess Technologies. TriAccess is a leading provider of Cable TV and Fiber-to-the-Premise (FTTP) integrated circuits for the amplification of high-quality multimedia content.

With the economy showing signs of recovery, we expect capital spending to pick up in the second half of 2009.

Management had earlier provided a strong forecast for the second half of 2009 as it foresees a sustained demand for handset and defense products along with an eventual recovery in the networks market. Inventory correction in the handset segment is almost done.

TriQuint is pitted against players like Skyworks Solutions (SWKS), ANADIGICS Inc. (ANAD) and RF Micro Devices (RFMD). It remains to be seen how it fares and wins market share as the economy picks up.

Becton Receives FDA Approval

Becton, Dickinson and Co. (BDX) announced that it received Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval to market its blood collection device, BD Vacutainer Rapid Serum Tube, in the U.S. Unlike standard tubes, the Serum tubes are ready for analysis in five minutes.

The Serum tube contains a gel additive that speeds up the clotting process, thereby enabling the tube to be put in a centrifuge for analysis five minutes after it is filled. On the other hand, standard tubes require 30 minutes of clotting before they are ready for use.

The new approval would boost demand for Serum tubes that will eventually drive revenues for the BD Diagnostics segment. BD Diagnostics is one of the three Becton’s operating segments that manufacture Serum tubes. Becton’s other two operating segments are: BD Medical and BD Biosciences.

ANADIGICS, Inc. (ANAD) recently announced a strategic agreement with WIN Semiconductors Corp., for the design and manufacture of Gallium Arsenide microwave monolithic integrated circuits (MMIC). Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) ICs are used in wireless handsets and data devices that allow people to connect and communicate everywhere.

ANADIGICS is headquartered in Warren, NJ. The company designs and manufactures semiconductor solutions for the broadband wireless and wireline communications markets. WIN Semiconductors Corp. is one of the world's largest pure-play GaAs foundries.

WIN has agreed to provide ANADIGICS with GaAs foundry processing services to meet customer demand for its high-performance, radio frequency integrated circuits (ICs). This foundry relationship is a key component of ANADIGICS' new hybrid manufacturing strategy. Together with its in-house manufacturing facility, the company can continue to deliver best-in-class RF devices to the wireless and broadband marketplaces.

In 2008, ANADIGICS lost significant market share (primarily at Samsung) as it was not able to meet increased demand from customers, which caused them to look for other sources of supply. This was mainly due to inefficiencies in manufacturing operations.

The problem grew out of proportion due to the recent economic slowdown, leading to delay in orders by customers to reduce exposure in this economic slowdown. All of this led to losses and management expects the company to continue incurring losses in 2009 as well.

ANADIGICS has several issues to be addressed in order to become competitive, which include a) Wireless customers need to be convinced that they can rely on getting a consistent supply of ANADIGICS products, which are considered to be superior; b) Win back the lost market share at its key customer – Samsung; c) Iron out inefficiencies in manufacturing operations; d) Diversify source of supply and key foundry partners; and e) decrease the cost base of the company’s Warren, NJ plant.

However, it remains to be seen how the management addresses these issues. We maintain our Neutral rating on the stock.
Read the full analyst report on "ANAD"
Zacks Investment Research

ANADIGICS, Inc. (ANAD) recently reported net sales of $31.5 million, up 3% sequentially but down 61% year over year in the second quarter of 2009. ANADIGICS designs and manufactures radio frequency integrated circuits (ICs) for the wireless and broadband markets.

The company had earlier guided revenues to decline by 8% – 10% sequentially in the second quarter but the reported results beat management’s expectations. Both 3G and wireless LAN sales depicted strength.

Purchases by LG continue to be steady and both Samsung and ZTE came in much stronger than anticipated. Despite inventory corrections by certain customers, revenue increased sequentially with LG Electronics, Samsung, ZTE, Cisco (CSCO) and Intel (INTC). The company regained some of its lost market share at Samsung.

However, revenues from cable infrastructure declined but came in better than expected by management.

The gross margin plummeted to 8.8% from 37.1% in the year-ago quarter and 11.1% in the prior quarter. EPS of 23 cents fell short of the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 29 cents.

Going forward, management remained cautious and expects third quarter sales to grow around 5% – 10% on a sequential basis as bookings are currently at the low end of revenue guidance. Visibility has improved but the company remains cautious as short lead time from customers is likely to continue into the third quarter.

Revenues from 3G are expected to increase in double digits while softness continues in cable which is expected to decline sequentially. The company expects a slow recovery in cable for the remainder of the year. Net loss on a non-GAAP basis is expected between 15 and 16 cents.

The key issues at ANAD are – winning back the business it has lost, clearing out inefficiencies in manufacturing operations, diversifying sources of supply and key foundry partners and lowering its cost base.
Read the full analyst report on "ANAD"
Read the full analyst report on "CSCO"
Read the full analyst report on "INTC"
Zacks Investment Research

Stocks recently featured in the blog include: Verizon (VZ), Microsoft (MSFT), Apple (AAPL), NewAlliance Bancshares, Inc. (NAL) and Anadigics Inc. (ANAD).

Here are highlights from Wednesday's Analyst Blog:

What Could Kill Apple-Verizon Deal?

In the continuing saga of the iPhone and Verizon (VZ) the press has written about a liaison between Verizon and Microsoft (MSFT) to sell a Microsoft-designed iPhone killer.

There is a cultural divide between Apple (AAPL) and Microsoft with rabid Apple devotees denigrating anything Microsoft. The popular opinion is that it takes three tries before Microsoft gets anything right (this goes back to the introduction of Windows where version 3.1 was the first version that worked).

There is also the notion that Microsoft is a software company. However, Microsoft has a very successful business selling mice and keyboards. Apple is known for its better operating systems.

NAL Beats, but Credit Deteriorates

NewAlliance Bancshares, Inc. (NAL) reported its 1Q09 financial results after market close yesterday. A conference call to discuss the results was held this morning.

Diluted earnings for the quarter came in at $0.12 per share, four cents ahead of our estimate. An almost-stable NIM, strong organic loan originations, growth in core deposits, reduced deposit costs, continued diligent expense control and a strong capital position were the key positives for the quarter.

Anadigics Hurt by Lower Guidance

Shares of Anadigics Inc. (ANAD, Hold) are off nearly 8% in early trading today following the company's better-than-expected Q1 results released yesterday. Apparently, the stock is discounting ANAD's forward guidance, which is lower than our and consensus expectations.

The company saw continued weakness in the Broadband area as directly related to the current economic downturn, impacting its wireless and cable segments. ANAD sees this weakness well into Q2 and clearly does not expect an upturn until Q3.

Anadigics Inc.: Lower Guidance Hurts Shares

Shares of Anadigics Inc. (ANAD, Hold) are off nearly 8% in early trading today following the company's better-than-expected Q1 results released yesterday. Apparently, the stock is discounting ANAD's forward guidance, which is lower than our and consensus expectations.

The company saw continued weakness in the Broadband area as directly related to the current economic downturn, impacting its wireless and cable segments. ANAD sees this weakness well into Q2 and clearly does not expect an upturn until Q3.

ANAD's Q1 revenue of $30.5 million were ahead of our $29.4 million expectation, but down 33% sequentially and 59% y/y. Non-GAAP net loss of $(0.21) also was better than the guidance of $(0.28) and our estimate of $0(0.27).

The revenue upside apparently came from the company's wireless 3G product line. However, current bookings are at the low end of revenue guidance, with both broadband and wireless segments expected to decline equally. The primary reason for the projected decline in wireless revenue stems from one of its customer's need to work down its current high inventory.

The company believes that there is a greater opportunity for an increase in turns business in the second quarter from other wireless customers, given their short lead times, which have not been forecasted due to the continued uncertainty in the markets.

We continue coverage of ANAD with a Hold rating till we see improvement in Q3.

Here are highlights from Wednesday's Analyst Blog:

Buy 3SBio Up to $10

3SBio Inc. (SSRX) is a China-based biotech company focused on developing and marketing therapeutics for nephrology, oncology and cancer supportive care. The company's flagship product EPIAO is the number 1 brand in China's EPO [erythropoietin] market.

Its second lead product TPIAO has gained rapid physician acceptance for thrombocytopenia and is making a meaningful contribution to the company's top line growth. Recent deal with US-based AMAG Pharmaceuticals Inc. (AMAG) will boost its expansion into IV Iron market.

Anadigics a Hold on Guidance

ANADIGICS, Inc. (ANAD) designs and manufactures radio frequency integrated circuits (ICs) for the wireless and broadband markets. Anadigics earlier reported revenues of $45.2 million in Q4:08, down 33.0% year over year and down 22.1% quarter over quarter.

Going forward, ANAD expects a decline of 35% year over year in Q1:09. In addition, the under-utilization of fabs will put pressure on gross margins. Management also stated that the fab is under-utilized and the company is not starting a lot of wafers due to the inventory position at the end of Q4. The company is looking for inventory turns above five in the coming quarter.

PetroChina Remains Expensive

PetroChina Company Ltd. (PTR) is the largest integrated oil company in China. The company's activities include: the exploration, development, production and sale of crude oil and natural gas; the refining, transportation, storage and marketing of petroleum products; the manufacture and sale of chemical products; and the transmission of natural gas, crude oil and refined products.

PetroChina ADRs have been weak in recent days, in line with the rest of the group, due to the pullback in crude oil prices and the broad turmoil in global markets. But they are hardly cheap. Based on most conventional valuation metrics, the ADRs are currently trading at a premium to the Chinese and other emerging market peers.

Teekay Shipping Stays Afloat

We are maintaining our Hold on Teekay Corporation (TK), but reducing our target price to $15. TK reported 3rd quarter EPS of $1.29 before nonrecurring items, above consensus and our estimate of $1.12, largely reflecting higher-than-expected revenue growth.

We are cutting our 2008 diluted EPS estimate to $3.75 from $4.00, as well as our 2009 estimate to $1.15 from $2.75, as we have moderated our revenue assumptions. Results should reflect the impact of global economic weakening on both spot rates and shipping volumes. We note that TK released restated financial results for the first half related to changes in the accounting treatment for long-term incentive compensation.

Anadigics: Q4 EPS Beat Dampened by Negative Q1 Outlook

Anadigics, Inc. (ANAD, Hold) reported its Q4 and FY08 results after the bell yesterday. The manufacturer of radio frequency integrated circuits (ICs) for the wireless and broadband markets reported Q4 proforma EPS of $(0.08) on revenues of $45.2 million, compared to our estimate of $(0.12) EPS on revenues of $42.4 million.

The Street had expected EPS of $(0.13) on revenues of $43.9 million. GAAP loss per share amounted to $(0.60), owing mostly to $(0.52) per share loss in charges which included stock-based compensation, asset impairments, inventory, impairment of auction rate securities and a reduction in workforce. For the year, the company reported EPS of $0.26 on an adjusted basis.

While the company came ahead of our and consensus expectations for Q4, its Q1 guidance indicates a steeper revenue decline than we had anticipated. Anadigics expects Q1 revenue to fall around 35% sequentially, or about $29 million, compared to our expectation of $40 million. Expected proforma per share loss for Q1 is also much higher than expected: $(0.28) vs. our expectation of $(0.09). The company did not provide guidance beyond Q1:FY09.

The current negative outlook indicates that the company's 2H:08 revenue decline was much steeper than the company had earlier anticipated, certainly lower compared to 1H:08, and the trend may continue for some time. Although the company is striving to manage operating expenses, capacity underutilization is expected to hurt gross margins negatively in the near-term. We anticipate FY09 losses to reach in the $(0.70) - $(0.80) per share range on a proforma basis, compared to our earlier expectation of a loss of $(0.21) for FY2009.

We maintain our Hold rating on shares of ANAD awaiting further developments beyond Q1.
