You may or may not know, Limited Brands owns the Victoria’s Secret Brands, along with Bath & Body works. This isn’t the first time I’ve written about them; Limited Brands needs a checkup at least once a year.

A Dang Good Year for AUDCAD … So Far!

If you bought the Australian dollar and simultaneously sold the Canadian dollar at the beginning of the year and you’re still positioned like that then you’re probably a pretty happy camper. That’s because year-to-date AUDCAD (Australian dollar vs. Canadian dollar) has jumped 1,000 PIPs – or 11.4%. And in the world of forex, that’s a huge move.

And having just tested its highest level in more than three years, we begin to wonder if this pair could be running out of gas. Buy-and-hold strategists will tell you the trend is your friend, so keep buying and holding. But we’ve got a different philosophy that keeps us asking: when is the trend not your friend? And when is the trend going to reverse and take you to the cleaners?

Right now may be one of those times … or it might not. But to us, the one-way climb and the underlying sentiment make this pair vulnerable to downside moves.

Much of our hesitation at these levels is because of our expectations for the US dollar. That’s because the Canadian dollar (a commodity currency) has become less tied to other commodity currencies (e.g. Australian dollar) and somewhat more correlated to the US dollar.

Why? Mostly because Canada’s economy is closely tied to the wallowing US economy. But maybe, just maybe, the dollar has found a bottom for a little while. If so, then maybe the Canadian dollar gets a little boost as well and outperforms fellow commodity currencies and the rest of the major currency pack during a period of dollar appreciation.

Taking the short side of AUDCAD is something to consider. Certainly a decent risk-reward set-up, we think.

Regards,

Jack & JR

I hadn't thought of it in those terms but anyone's perception of fundamentals notwithstanding, 25% in two months creates a meaningful headwind for further price rises in the near term.

In an environment like this that headwind could be overcome to be sure but with energy now 16% of the S&P 500 an equalweight position takes on a little more risk for downside volatility than some folks may realize.

We have guests and other dogs with us for the holiday.

The chart is YTD for the Legg Mason Value Trust (LMVTX) versus the S&P 500.

You know the fund for its very long streak of beating the S&P 500. A look at the stale holdings on Yahoo Finance shows that it makes what I think are big bets and sometimes big bets do not work out.

It has United Healthcare (UNH) which has a 4.45% weight after a 41% drop. The fund is overweight financials versus SPX and it has zero in energy. Zero?

This is a good example of how actively managed funds can be problematic. A contrarian might have guessed that after a long run of outperformance the fund would lag. That makes sense. But the issue that I see and have articulated before is that there is no way to do any forward looking analysis on an actively managed fund. This is because no one can know what the manager will do six months from now.

I always say that I don't go zero anything because that is a bigger bet then I am willing to make. LMVTX' zero weight to energy makes the point. Even an underweight to an energy ETF would have helped the performance numbers.

This is not to pick on the fund because it is a good bet that the fund will outperform at some point in the future but that the lag came at the worst possible time (into the the teeth of a bear market) is either bad luck or something else but either way it was bad timing.

The company will be buying the Folgers coffee business from Procter & Gamble (PG) in a transaction worth about $3 billion. PG shareholders will end up with a significant stake in SJM. In addition, before the transaction is completed, SJM will send out a $5-per-share special dividend to its investors. I expect to see more deal activity in this space. The big players are looking for growth and economies of scale by snapping up smaller players and individual product lines.Meanwhile, income investors who own these stable, profitable businesses are happily collecting dividend checks year in and year out.

Only 6% remains of S&P500 companies to post Q1 earnings. Actually earnings fell by -17,5% against estimated growth +5,7% (data provided by Thomson on 1st Jan 08). Huge "contribution" had financials sector. Compared to Q1 2007 financials posted $142 bln less and finished quarter in loss of $28 bln.

Q1 started badly by General Electric (GE) which didn't provide bright outlook for other earnings. Nevertheless it wasn't so bad quarter. If two sectors (the best - energy; the worst - financials) are taken out earnings actually grew by 2,9%. That's not so far from optimistic January estimates.

Estimation for Q2 2008 are currently set negative -5,4%.
http://stockweb.blogspot.com/atom.xml
