American Medical Systems Holdings, Inc. (AMMD) reported strong fiscal third quarter results. For the quarter, earnings per share was 27 cents, beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 20 cents and the year-ago earnings of 18 cents. Concept us makes a proprietary birth control product for women called Essure. The Essure procedure is permanent, done with out any incisions, and right in the doctor's office. The procedure is available in the Americas, Europe, Australia, and the Middle East.

Crushed Estimates

The company reported third-quarter results on Oct 21st that included a 29% increase in sales, to $34.2 million. Conceptus was expecting between $32 and $33.5 million in sales.

Net income more than tripled to $6.2 million, up from $2.0 million in the same period last year. This equated to an adjusted EPS pf 24 cents, well above the 9 cents analysts were expecting.

(AMMD) recently won a new contract to supply three of its female stress urinary incontinence (SUI) treatment devices, Monarc Subfascial Hammock, MiniArc Single-Incision Sling, and SPARC Sling System, in the U.K. The contract was awarded by the public healthcare provider of the U.K. , the National Healthcare Services (NHS), as part of its multiple-awardees contract. Financial details of the contract are yet to be disclosed.  The devices will be available to women treated in any NHS hospital in the region and supported by the Normanton centre, U.K. The Monarc device is one of the leading transobturator slings that bring relief to women suffering from SUI. American Medical Systems Holdings, Inc. (AMMD) reported second-quarter revenue at the top of its prior guidance. EPS met the top range of guidance when excluding the royalty payment and normalizing for changes in interest expense. After adjusting for these factors, EPS still exceeded the analyst consensus.

Strong performance is attributed to solid expense management as a result of the numerous cost saving initiatives, legacy MenÂ’s health products. Laser Therapy continues to be weak, declining 11 percent in the quarter. WomenÂ’s health continues to underperform expectations although incontinence revenues were strong with MiniArc driving growth.

New products like Miniaturo could stimulate the female continence business, but we believe the growth trend is still soft. The Miniaturo product carries the CE mark approval in Europe for urinary dysfunction. American Medical has developed a comprehensive plan to receive the Food and Drug AdministrationÂ’s approval and expects marketing the product late 2010.
