Novellus Systems (NVLS) raised its fourth-quarter revenue and earnings outlook, as a result of the ongoing recovery in the semiconductor market.

The company now expects revenues of $225-245 million, compared to previous guidance of $215-245 million, which raises the mid-point from $230 to $235 million.

Management had previously guided to bookings increase of 25-50%, which were not subsequently revised. Therefore, we assume that bookings are expected to remain within this range.

GAAP gross margin expectations were also not revised and remain in the 44-47% range.

EPS expectations were raised to 25-40 cents from previous guidance of 20-40 cents. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for the fourth quarter is pegged at 31 cents, close to the middle of the revised range.

The company’s third-quarter earnings beat the Zacks Consensus Estimate by a penny. Order momentum, stronger DRAM and NAND prices, higher volumes, higher utilization rates and a lower cost structure contributed to the better-than-expected results.

The computing and smart phone markets drove strength in the third quarter and are expected to drive fourth quarter results as well.

The company generates the largest chunk of revenues from the Asia Pacific region, followed by North America and then Europe. We expect the Asia Pacific region to remain strong in the next quarter, as the strength in DRAM and NAND prices continue. Last quarter, revenues from the region increased double-digits both sequentially and year over year. We also expect improvement in both North America and Europe.

Not only Novellus, but other equipment makers such as ASML Holdings (ASML), Applied Materials (AMAT) and KLA Tencor (KLAC), microprocessor makers such as Intel (INTC) and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), and analog makers such as Linear Technology (LLTC), Maxim Integrated Products (MXIM), Intersil Corp (ISIL) and Semtech (SMTC) reported stronger results in the last quarter.
Read the full analyst report on "NVLS"
Read the full analyst report on "ASML"
Read the full analyst report on "AMAT"
Read the full analyst report on "KLAC"
Read the full analyst report on "INTC"
Read the full analyst report on "AMD"
Read the full analyst report on "LLTC"
Read the full analyst report on "MXIM"
Read the full analyst report on "ISIL"
Read the full analyst report on "SMTC"
Zacks Investment Research

Intel Corp (INTC) raised the quarterly cash dividend by 12.5%, totaling 63 cents a share in 2010. The dividend yield comes to 3.1%.

The company has been paying a cash dividend for the last 17 years and has raised the dividend 14 times since it started.

Intel has over $8 billion of net cash on its balance sheet, or around $1.58 a share. The $1.25 billion payment to Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) will take another 23 cents a share off the cash balance.

The remaining cash ($1.35 a share) is sufficient to fund its growth plans, even after paying the higher rate of dividend. We also expect Intel to continue generating strong cash flows, based on its leading market position and product development strategies.

Intel’s announcement comes as an indication of the technology turnaround. However, the company is not the first to recognize the gain, or pass it to investors. Texas Instruments (TXN) announced a nice raise in September, as the company started seeing broad-based strength in its business.

Chip companies have rallied strongly from the downturn, both due to changes in market dynamics and a more cautious approach by most players. Companies like Linear Technology (LLTC), Maxim Integrated Products (MXIM), Analog Devices (ADI), National Semiconductor (NSM) and TI were all quick to cut inventories at the first signs of the recession.

The companies also benefited from the growing demand in Asia, as a lot of the manufacturing and particularly, assembling has shifted to the region. Another positive for these companies has been the growing consumption of electronic goods in Asia. Therefore, despite the recession, demand has held up relatively better than other sectors in the recession-dampened U.S. and Europe.
Read the full analyst report on "INTC"
Read the full analyst report on "AMD"
Read the full analyst report on "TXN"
Read the full analyst report on "LLTC"
Read the full analyst report on "MXIM"
Read the full analyst report on "ADI"
Read the full analyst report on "NSM"
Zacks Investment Research

Intel Corp (INTC) has agreed to pay Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) $1.25 billion to settle long-standing disputes between the two chipmakers. This immediately takes care of the AMD lawsuit that was slated to come up for trial in roughly five months time.

Intel agreed to a set of business practices, including non-payment of financial incentives to companies that favored Intel chips over AMD and training of sales staff accordingly. We believe there are grey areas here, since Intel has in any case repeatedly denied such foul play.

The more significant outcome is the company’s release of AMD from the provisions of the x86 deal entered into in 1995. At that time, AMD had acquired the right to manufacture chips based on the x86 architecture. However, the Globalfoundries spinoff raised the issue of a fresh license, which Intel said was necessary and AMD said was not. AMD also agreed to drop all charges against Intel.

The two companies will also cross-license certain patents over the next five years and meet at regular intervals to mutually solve issues, failing which there will be an attempt at third-party mediation.

Intel and AMD dominate the microprocessor market for computers, although Intel is the larger player with an 80% market share. Although Intel may have had to part with more than it bargained for since the recent EU fine turned things in AMD’s favor, resolving the issue lets it go ahead with its mobile strategy.

The computing market is currently slow-growing and mature, with other segments such as handsets and consumer electronic devices expected to drive faster growth. Intel has strong competition here in the shape of ARM Holdings (ARMH), whose less capable power-efficient chips are much better suited to products in these high-growth markets.

The deal will generate much-needed cash for AMD and help it go ahead with its growth strategy. The company will be able to sell its entire stake in Globalfoundries and remove some of the debt on its balance sheet. But success continues to hinge on its ability to churn out technology that could compete with Intel’s.
Read the full analyst report on "INTC"
Read the full analyst report on "AMD"
Read the full analyst report on "ARMH"
Zacks Investment Research

Maxim Integrated Products Inc.’s (MXIM) first quarter earnings beat consensus estimates by a penny. Revenue was over the high-end of management’s guidance range of $415-445 million, or a sequential increase of 5-13%.

Revenue
Revenue of $449.2 million was up 13.9% sequentially and down 10.4% year over year. The sequential strength in demand was reflective of the rebound in the semiconductor sector and follows stronger results reported by other chip companies, such as Linear Technology (LLTC), Intel Corp. (INTC), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Texas Instruments (TXN).

Revenue by End Market
The computing market generated 25% of revenue, up 13.9% sequentially and down 20% year over year. Revenue benefited from sequential strength in the server, financial terminals and notebook segments.

The consumer market generated 33% of revenue, up 17.4% sequentially and 5.6% year over year. The cell phone and LCD TV markets accounted for the strength in the last quarter. Several new designs ramped into production, providing further impetus to growth.

Industrial generated 24% of revenue, up 9.3% sequentially and down 10.4% year over year. Segment results were driven by broad-based strength in all areas.

Communications brought in the remaining 18%, a sequential increase of 13.9% and a year-over-year decline of 19.3%. The segment saw broad-based growth, although networking and data communications were the strongest.

Orders
Management does not provide specific information on orders, as shifts in customer vendor managed inventory programs distort quarter-to-quarter comparisons.

Our estimates indicate that orders were up 7.0% in the last quarter, resulting in a higher backlog. Turns sales also increased, although at a slower rate than in the last two quarters. The book-to-bill ratio was over 1.

Distributor bookings increased 6% sequentially, with channel inventories increasing 4%. Channel inventories remain lean overall, as they are still down 35% from year-ago levels. Distributor bookings on Maxim increased 90% sequentially, as end demand continued to strengthen. Customer lead times were steady.

Consumer market bookings were driven by very strong demand in LCD TVs and flattish cell phones. Computing market bookings were up low single-digits. There was double-digit bookings growth in financial terminals, storage, servers and peripherals. Communications bookings saw broad-based strength, particularly in networking and datacom. Base station bookings grew, driven by increased demand from China . All segments within industrial witnessed strong bookings growth in the last quarter.

Operating Performance
The pro forma gross margin was 57.2%, up 241 basis points (bps) sequentially and down 558 bps year over year. Management attributed the increase to higher utilization rates, driven by the higher volumes and the Dallas fab shutdown.

Operating expenses of $150.7 million were higher than the $139.9 million recorded in the Jun 2009 quarter. The operating margin was 23.7%, up 433 bps sequentially and down 849 bps year over year. Most of the sequential increae was attributable to the higher gross margin, although lower R&D and flattish SG&A (as a percentage of sales) also contributed.

The pro forma net income was $41.4 million, or a 9.2% net income margin compared to $47.4 million, or 12.0% in the previous quarter and $122.5 million, or a 24.4% net income margin in the prior-year quarter. The fully diluted pro forma earnings per share was $0.13 compared to $0.15 in the previous quarter and $0.38 in the Sep quarter of last year. Our pro forma calculations exclude restructuring charges, stock based compensation charges certain one-time litigation charges and impairment of long-lived assets and tax adjustments in the last quarter. On a fully diluted GAAP basis, the company recorded a net income of $41.9 million ($0.13 per share) compared to $8.1 million ($0.03 per share) in the previous quarter and a net profit of $67.6 million ($0.21 per share) in the prior-year quarter.

Balance Sheet
Inventories were down 11.7% to $192.3 million, yielding inventory turns of 4.0x. Days sales outstanding (DSOs) were around 46 days. The cash and marketable securities balance was $937.6 million, up $24.2 million during the quarter. The company spent $27 million on PP&E, $4 million on acquisitions, $61 million on cash dividends and $18 million on share repurchases in the last quarter. Around $100 million of investments were converted to cash. Maxim has no long term debt and long term liabilities totaled $220.0 million at quarter-end.

Guidance
In the fiscal second quarter, revenue is expected to lie in the $450-465 million range (up 0.2- 3.5% sequentially). The industrial end market is expected to see some strength, as bookings increased 22% in the last quarter. The communications market is expected to be up slightly, driven by continued growth in fiber modules. Computing will have mixed results, with a decline in notebooks offset by increase in servers and financial terminals. The consumer market is expected to decline as some customers engage in year-end inventory rebalancing. However, LCD TVs will continue to grow.

The GAAP gross margin is expected to lie in the 57-59% range, due to higher utilization rates and better mix. Operating expenses are expected to increase to $175-178 million, driven by higher bonuses, higher design activity and higher stock based expenses. The tax rate, excluding $15 million of additional tax provision for international restructuring is expected to be 36%. The pro forma EPS is expected to be $0.16-$0.20.
Read the full analyst report on "MXIM"
Zacks Investment Research

Stocks recently featured in the blog include: International Business Machine (IBM), Accenture (ACN), Intel Corp. (INTC), Google Inc. (GOOG) and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD).

Here are highlights from Friday’s AnalystBlog:

IBM Exceeds & Raises Outlook

International Business Machine’s (IBM) third-quarter 2009 earnings exceeded the Zacks Consensus Estimate by one cent. As a result of expense management, net profit improved by 14% to $3.2 billion, while earnings per share rose 18% to $2.40 per share. This compares to a profit of $2.8 billion or $2.04 per share in the year-ago period. Net margins increased 250 basis points to 13.6%.

Profitability in the quarter was fueled by higher gross profit margin, which improved to 45.1% from 43.3% in the year-ago quarter led by improved margin in the Services and Software segments. IBM has benefited from the growing focus on these high margin businesses. This has allowed the company to expand its gross margins for 20 of the past 21 quarters. Moreover, the company benefited from lower interest expense, which fell 46.9% from the year-ago period.

IBM remained focused on its cost-cutting initiatives, as a result of which third quarter operating expenses fell 11% year-over-year. SG&A expense decreased 11.2% to $5.0 billion and RD&E expense decreased 8.4% to $1.4 billion from the year-ago period.

Total revenue was in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate, although it declined 6.9% (down 5.0% when adjusted for currency) to $23.6 billion from the year-ago quarter. We remain cautious about currency fluctuation, which is taking a toll on revenue and may be critical to earnings growth over the next two years.

Overall, sales were down across all segments. However, IBM benefited from market share gains in its Hardware and Software segments in the quarter. The company reported improved revenue from its branded middleware products that include WebSphere, Information Management, Tivoli and Lotus products, which increased 2% year over year. As a result, the decline in the company’s Software segment was the lowest of all segments and fell just 3% year over year in the quarter.

From a geographic perspective, revenue was down 5% in the North American region and 6% in growth markets, but dropped 12% in the EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa).

Weak IT spending pulled down revenue, and we do not expect a recovery this year. IBM did not provide any comment on the IT spending environment, but said that the economy is improving. Moreover, IBM’s rival Accenture (ACN) has refrained from predicting a full recovery in business spending. Intel Corp. (INTC) also expects corporate spending to remain weak until 2010.

Weak recovery in technology spending has made it hard to win new business. As a result, IBM reported a drop in signed services contracts, which fell to $11.8 billion, a decrease of 7% from the year-ago period. Thus we remain concerned on the company’s long-term customer wins. Signings in Consulting and Systems Integration and in Integrated Technology Services decreased 16%. The estimated services backlog on Sept. 30 was $134 billion.

The balance sheet continues to be strong as IBM delivered $11.5 billion in total cash and marketable securities, compared to $12.5 billion in the previous quarter. The company reported cash flow from operations (excluding Global Financing receivables) of $4.4 billion, with free cash flow of $3.4 billion. Debt was reduced by $4 billion in the quarter.

2009 EPS Outlook Raised

The company raised its earnings outlook for fiscal 2009, the second time this year, and now expects full-year earnings of at least $9.85, up from the previous forecast of $9.70. This is above the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $9.77 per share.

IBM expects to return to revenue growth in the fourth quarter. Management stated that IBM is well on course to deliver an EPS of $10 to $11 in 2010. The company also expects 2009 pre-tax income for its software and services businesses to grow at double-digit rates and reach around $8 billion.

IBM has been growing its profits and stands to benefit from cost-cutting measures, strong liquidity position, operational efficiency, substantial free cash flow and earnings momentum. We believe that IBM is fundamentally a sound company with a strong market position. Thus we remain optimistic on the company’s long-term growth and expect it to post stronger results in 2010.

We expect further upside on IBM’s share price and advise stockholders to wait for a favorable exit point. Until then we remain Neutral on IBM.

Earlier this week, IT giants, Google Inc. (GOOG), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Intel Corp. all reported better than expected results due to the improving economy. We expect the year 2010 to be a good year for the IT sector as a whole, due to improving demand and better tech spending.

U.S. stocks stayed above the threshold reached yesterday as a late-session buying helped offset weakness in banking and technology shares. Financials dragged on stocks through the early afternoon even as Goldman Sachs and Citigroup reported better-than-expected profit reports. However, the final fifteen minutes witnessed much of the activity as higher oil prices sent energy stocks higher and, in turn, helped the broader market.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed above the 10,000 level for the second-successive day, edging up 47 points, or 0.5%. The S&P 500 index edged up 4 points, or 0.4% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite ended the day virtually flat. The gains in the Dow average were led by Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) whose shares jumped 2.9%. The Windows 7 is slated for release on October 22.

Among energy stocks, Chevron (NYSE:CVX) and ExxonMobil (NYSE:XOM) shares climbed 1.6% and 1.5%, respectively, as crude prices jumped to their highest levels of the year. Meanwhile, the US Department of Energy said gasoline stockpiles fell 5.2 million barrels per day last week, well below expectations of 700,000 decline.

Pfizer (NYSE:PFE) rose 1.7% after it completed its acquisition of Wyeth.

Nevertheless, weakness in financial sector shares, off 0.6%, hurt sentiment even as Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) reported estimate-topping numbers. Citigroup's (NYSE:C) strong trading returns were overcome by increasing consumer loan losses. Citi's (NYSE:C) CEO Vikram Pandit warned, "US consumer credit remains the number one issue affecting our near-term results." JP Morgan (NYSE:JPM) CEO Jamie Dimon warned that level of loan losses are likely to remain high.

Tech shares also failed to advance, even as IBM (NYSE:IBM) raised its earnings outlook and reported numbers that were above Street projections. Advanced Micro Devices' (NYSE:AMD) narrower-than-expected loss and the return of its core chip-making operations to profitability failed to lift sentiments either. However, Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) better-than-expected results were helped by return to sequential quarterly growth, a 5% increase in average cost-per-clicks over the second quarter, and a positive impact from the declining dollar. Shares in Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) rose 3.6% in after-hours trading as CEO Eric Schmidt noted, "While there are a lot of uncertainties about the pace of [the] economic recovery, we believe the worst of the recession is behind us and now feel confident about investing heavily in our future."

Today's expected results include a number of significant results from companies such as Bank of America (NYSE:BAC), Genuine Parts (NYSE:GPC), General Electric (NYSE:GE), and Mattel (NYSE:MAT). Also reporting are: Halliburton (NYSE:HAL) and First Horizon National (NYSE:FHN).
Zacks Investment Research

Read the full analyst report on "IBM"
Read the full analyst report on "ACN"
Read the full analyst report on "INTC"
Read the full analyst report on "GOOG"
Read the full analyst report on "AMD"
Zacks Investment Research

International Business Machines (IBM) has been charged by the Computer and Communications Industry Association (CCIA), a non-profit trade group organized by IBM’s rivals Microsoft (MSFT) and Oracle (ORCL). The allegation is directed at its Mainframe computer business, which is taking revenues and pressurizing profits of its competitors by withdrawing the license access to customers using non-IBM hardware operating systems.

The U.S. Justice Department (DOJ) is investigating the allegations against IBM for its conduct in the Mainframe business. Some smaller companies in the banking, government and health care sector develop technologies that would allow the software to run on cheaper hardware. Thus, to freeze competition, IBM has combined its mainframe operating systems with hardware and acquired startup Platform Solutions Inc.

Moreover, it has been alleged that IBM has curbed license of its mainframe operating systems to users of Hercules, which is an open-source software that allows IBM's mainframe operating systems to run on Intel (INTC) and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) devices.

Last year, IBM acquired Platform Solutions, which complained to European regulators about IBM's restriction on the usage of its mainframe operating software on non-IBM computers.

The probe by the Justice Department will also open up antitrust violations by large telecom companies such as AT&T (T) and Verizon Communications (VZ) who use their dominant position in the market to win exclusive deals with handset makers and crush smaller firms.

The first quarter of 2009 was the fifth consecutive quarter for IBM’s double-digit MIPS growth on mainframe servers as well as double-digit revenue growth in the high-end of POWER servers, as 62 enterprise customers migrated to POWER systems.

Moreover, the company’s Systems and Technology segment has been growing and is expected to get a boost from new mainframe contracts extending its leadership in energy efficiency, security and resilience.

IBM said that it will cooperate with any DOJ inquiries. Thus IBM may have to worry about the current antitrust hurdle. But we note that the company has been under antitrust scrutiny many times in the past and the government ultimately dropped the case on each occasion after a long clash.

However, the effects of the scrutiny cannot be ignored.
Read the full analyst report on "IBM"
Read the full analyst report on "MSFT"
Read the full analyst report on "ORCL"
Read the full analyst report on "INTC"
Read the full analyst report on "AMD"
Read the full analyst report on "T"
Read the full analyst report on "VZ"
Zacks Investment Research

The European Union (EU) recently exposed the reason behind its $1.6 billion fine on Intel (INTC) in the last quarter.

The EU produced internal email excerpts of leading PC makers, such as Dell (DELL), Hewlett Packard Company (HPQ), NEC Corporation of Japan and Lenovo of China, as well as Intel’s own employees.

The email excerpts displayed the PC makers’ concern regarding the usage of chips made by competitors such as Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). They also expressed the favor Intel was likely to bestow on those players that exclusively used Intel products.

Specific allegations include special rebates to PC-makers on the condition that they do little or no business with AMD, making special payments to PC-makers to delay or cancel AMD-based products and offering server microprocessors below cost to strategic customers to prevent customer losses.

The EU stood by its decision to impose the fine, as it believes that the evidence is sufficient to prove Intel’s guilt. It reprimanded Intel’s practices, which are commonly perceived to be anti-competitive and anti-innovation, resulting in reduction of consumer choices.

The negative publicity notwithstanding, Intel continues to maintain its leading position in the microprocessor market, with an 80.6% share of global microprocessor revenue in the second quarter of 2009 (iSuppli). This was a 1.5% sequential increase and 1.4% increase from the comparable quarter of the prior year.

However, AMD’s market share in the second quarter declined 1.4% sequentially and 0.4% from the prior-year period, mainly on account of lower prices.
Read the full analyst report on "INTC"
Read the full analyst report on "DELL"
Read the full analyst report on "HPQ"
Read the full analyst report on "AMD"
Zacks Investment Research

Moody’s senior analyst Ken Chan put Chartered Semiconductor’s (CHRT) speculative-grade Ba2 rating under review for a possible downgrade after Abu Dhabi’s nationalized investment firm, ATIC, proposed to buy the Singapore-based company for $1.8 billion.

The acquisition would transfer the majority holding from Singapore investment agency, Temasek (Moody’s rating Aaa) to ATIC (Abu Dhabi’s sovereign rating Aa2).

Analysts differed on how the acquisition would affect Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), which had earlier united with ATIC to form Globalfoundries. Although Chartered and Globalfoundries will continue to operate as separate entities, increased scale of operations could result in cost synergies. Since AMD includes Globalfoundries in its consolidated results, the deal could shorten its road to profitability.

The deal would also open up Globalfoundries to several big customers, such as Microsoft Corp. (MSFT), Broadcom Corp. (BRCM), Marvell Technology Group (MRVL) and Texas Instruments (TXN). Its end market exposure would rise with the addition of communications and gaming to the computing and select consumer space.

Opinions are divided on whether the acquisition would bring significant technology enhancements. While the deal should bring some benefit in general, we don’t expect it to be adequate to overcome competition. The foundry space is dominated by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) and United Microelectronics (UMC), which together serve around two-thirds of the total market.

While TSMC has strong customer relationships with the likes of Intel Corp. (INTC), Qualcomm (QCOM), NetLogic Microsystems (NETL) and NVIDIA Corp. (NVDA), which have brought it to the number one position, UMC is the most commonly selected second source.

AMD management reconfirmed that there would be no breach of the x86 licensing agreement with Intel. They also expressed optimism regarding probable cost benefits from superior scale of operations.

Read the full analyst report on "AMD"
Read the full analyst report on "CHRT"
Read the full analyst report on "MSFT"
Read the full analyst report on "INTC"
Read the full analyst report on "TSMC"
Read the full analyst report on "UMC"
Read the full analyst report on "BRCM"
Read the full analyst report on "MRVL"
Read the full analyst report on "TXN"
Read the full analyst report on "QCOM"
Read the full analyst report on "NETL"
Zacks Investment Research

Increased activity on the merger and acquisition front and promising signs that the economic downturn is easing sent U.S. stocks higher Tuesday as traders, back after a long weekend, picked up energy and commodity stocks. With traders turning to riskier bets, Treasury prices sank, sending corresponding yields higher. Positive factors sent gold prices beyond the $1,000 per ounce mark, before prices eased a little to settle at $997.80. Dollar declined 1.1% to $1.4498 per euro. Copper prices gained 3.1% on improved global recovery prospects.

The 30-share Dow Jones industrial average rose 56 points, or 0.6%, to 9,497.34 and the S&P 500 index added 9 points, or 0.9%, to 1,025.39, its highest close in 11 months. The tech-heavy NASDAQ added 19 points, or 0.94%, to close at 2,037.77 points. On the New York Stock Exchange, advancing issues outpaced those that declined three to one on volume of 1.32 billion shares. However, a jump in the CBOE Vix volatility measure, which rose 1.4% to 25.62, added a note of caution to the upbeat mood.

Dollar’s plunge to an 11-month low was also due to a Monday release from the United Nations, which again called for less dependence on the greenback as the premier global reserve currency. Indications that China would diversify some of its interests into gold also hurt the dollar, although the size of China's reserves mitigates against much impact. Nevertheless, the news helped gold prices. This morning's news indicated Barrick Gold (NYSE:ABX) is planning to raise up to $3.5 billion through a new share offering priced at $36.95 per share.

Yesterday, General Electric (NYSE:GE) was the leading gainer on the DJIA after being upgraded by JP Morgan (NYSE:JPM). Costco (NASDAQ:COST) advanced 2.3% after two brokerages upgraded the stock. Among tech issues, IBM (NYSE:IBM) retreated 0.3% after it was downgraded; however, the firm noted it is "well ahead" of its 2010 earnings target of $10-$11 per share. Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE:AMD) surged 14.6% as Barclays Capital (NYSE:BCS) upgraded the shares to "outperform." AIG (NYSE:AIG) shares slumped 10.5% after Credit Suisse (NYSE:CS) downgraded the stock to "underperform," noting "little to no value for common equity" remains.

Nine of the ten S&P industry groups recorded gains Tuesday , with oil and gas (+2.7%) and basic material shares (+2.1%) leading the list of gainers. Only healthcare shares registered declines, declining 0.3%. Crude prices spiked $3.31 to $71.33 on expectations today's OPEC meeting will see no change in the production levels. Moreover, Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) maintained a favorable long-term view on the group, saying there is an "increasing evidence of a stronger-than-expected recovery in global industrial activity." Chevron (NYSE:CVX) and ExxonMobil (NYSE:XOM) shares gained 2.2% and 2.1%, respectively. Among basic material issues, Alcoa (NYSE:AA) rose 3.5% to $12.60.

In today's Presidential appearance before a rare joint session of Congress, President Obama will attempt to resuscitate his healthcare reform package and counter the groundswell of centrist opposition, which has driven his ratings to a low 52% point.
Zacks Investment Research

The technology leader in high definition products and the world's no. 2 manufacturer of NAND flash memory chips, Toshiba Corp., plans to outsource a part of the production of its next-generation 28-nanometer (nm) system chips.

According to industry sources, the chips will be used in a wide range of electronics such as game consoles, digital cameras, flat panel TVs and other electronic gadgets starting in April 2010. To meet demand by that period, Toshiba will have to ramp up production. Its customers include IT giants like Apple (AAPL), which has already purchased $500 million worth flash memory chips from Toshiba.

Toshiba currently manufactures chips at its plant in Oita, southern Japan and plans to outsource to expand its production if capacity is insufficient.

According to sources, Toshiba is holding discussion with Singapore’s Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Ltd. (CHRT) and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) to spin off Globalfoundries Inc. and proceed with its outsourcing plan. This will help the company to reduce costs and fulfill customer supply orders.

Last year, Toshiba formed a joint venture with Sony (SNE) and SCEI (Toshiba owned 60% while Sony and SCEI owned 20% each) for the production of high-performance semiconductors, which include the Cell/B.E. processor, the RSX graphics engine and SoCs (System-on-Chip) for applications in digital consumer products. Moreover, to ramp up chip production, it bought Sony’s SoC line for about 90 billion yen ($968 million).

Toshiba competes with International Business Machines (IBM), which has technology alliances with Chartered Semiconductor, Globalfoundries, Infineon Technologies, Samsung Electronics, NEC Electronics and STMicroelectronics (STM) for developing 28 nm chips. In addition, NVIDIA (NVDA) plans to boost its 40nm technology, that is likely to improve margins and help the company take market share from Toshiba.

Toshiba is looking to bid for French nuclear group Areva's power transmission and distribution unit. This new line will help the company enter into a new line of power business for stable revenue and growth that will facilitate cost reduction at its loss-making chip division that has been under pressure due to economic recession.

Shares of Toshiba were up 3.2% to 481 yen outperforming a 1% rise in the benchmark Nikkei average.

Read the full analyst report on "AAPL"
Read the full analyst report on "CHRT"
Read the full analyst report on "AMD"
Read the full analyst report on "SNE"
Read the full analyst report on "IBM"
Read the full analyst report on "STM"
Read the full analyst report on "NVDA"
Zacks Investment Research

div style="text-align: justify;"Citigroup is upgrading span style="font-weight: bold;"Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE:AMD/span) to Buy from Hold and raising price target to $5.50 (prev. $4.25).br /br /Firm notes they are upgrading AMD, given what they believe is a favorable risk/reward profile. They are raising our price target based on a sum of the parts of Global Foundries ($0.45) and Product Co ($5.08). Firm' estimates are tweaked given their more rigorous model for Global Foundries.br /br /span style="font-weight: bold;"Deep Discount to the Sector — /span3Q09 QTD, AMD shares are down 4.4%, underperforming the broader chip industry (SOXX up 14.5%, Samp;P up 11.6%). Citi recognizes that AMD’s competitive position is poor and its net debt position classifies the company as “low quality.” However, now trading at just 1.25x EV/sales, a 45% discount to the group (2.3x), they see risk/reward as favorable.br /br /span style="font-weight: bold;"Elements of Stabilization Evident/span — 3 fundamental factors are contemplated in their upgrade: 1) AMD’s competitive position with its major customer is likely bottoming, supported by recent platform wins; 2) AMD’s gross margin is expected to rise off bottom quintile 2Q09 levels, correlating well with share price; 3) 2010 consensus estimates are likely conservative, noting that AMD tends to outperform the current consensus growth rate 75% of the time in periods of improving PC growth.br /br /span style="font-weight: bold;"Not Without Risks — /span1) 2H09 back-to-school selling season could be a disappointment, impacting the entire sector; 2) AMD is highly likely to refinance its 2012 debt—while not expected to be via equity, dilution is a possibility; 3) OEM’s are increasingly looking to non x86 providers of CPU’s (notably Qualcomm), creating a potential long-term threat to AMD.br /br /span style="font-weight: bold;"Confident in Improving Gross Margin./span Firm is increasingly confident in gross margin improvement for AMD—noting that 2Q09 GM was in the bottom quintile of AMD’s historical margin performance. In 1H09, Global Foundries gross margin averaged ~15%, hampered by sub-50% utilization rates as sales fell 18% 1H09/1H08;. However, AMD’s clearance of 65nm inventory in 2Q09, ahead of seasonal growth in 2H09, has paved the way to increased utilization. Firm has confirmed that production levels are increasing, benefited by lower cost 45nm production.

Hard times seem far from over for Dell (DELL). The company’s Chairman Michael Dell and Chief Executive Officer Kevin Rollins are encountering problems on all fronts.

Trouble started with the Sony (SNE) laptop battery fiasco back in 2006, which prompted the company to recall over four million units. More recently, management decided to terminate its agreement with Intel (INTC) and use Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) chips instead. We believe this could impair consumer confidence, especially since rumblings of customer dissatisfaction are getting louder.

Further, one of its most successful business strategies is also not working well. Dell used to attract clients by displaying cheap products on the company website. Customers browsing the website would end up spending an additional $2500 on PC accessories.

This scenario is changing rapidly since PCs with enhanced processors and accessories are now easily available at stores. Rivals HP (HPQ), Lenovo (LNVYG) and Acer have also started pricing models at competitive prices, which is increasing competition for the company.

Despite these pressures, Dell refuses to adapt a business model to suit current market dynamics. While most of its competitors have attuned themselves suitably, Dell continues to stick with its supply chain management policy and direct sales model.

Again, management’s decision to cut costs is hurting customer service and product quality. Some customers are of the opinion that rival products are cheaper, more user friendly and come with better customer service.

Employees are also getting increasingly dissatisfied. Some employees believe that the company’s work culture is undergoing sea change, with the fun element receding gradually. Rumor has it that CEO Kevin Collins could soon part ways with Dell. If it loses key executives at this critical juncture, it would be a definite setback for the company.

The picture looks worse when we consider the weakness in recent results and the Securities & Exchange Commission’s (SEC) probe into Dell’s accounting policy. The company should restructure its business model in line with changing market dynamics and focus on employee satisfaction and product quality.

The company is trying to capture the Indian market, which could be an important step in the right direction. We believe that a revival in customer confidence will be the key to Dell’s success in the days to come.

Read the full analyst report on "DELL"
Read the full analyst report on "LNVYG"
Read the full analyst report on "AMD"
Read the full analyst report on "INTC"
Read the full analyst report on "SNE"
Read the full analyst report on "HPQ"
Zacks Investment Research

India’s position as an R&D [research and development] destination is growing. The country has a large population of educated English-speaking people who can deliver competing quality at a fraction of the cost. It is also a part of the emerging markets that will experience the strongest growth over the next few years.

Honeywell International (HON) inaugurated its second Indian R&D facility in May 2009. The company set up the 600,000 square foot facility for 3,000 people at a cost of $50 million. Microsoft’s (MSFT) R&D facility in Bangalore played a key role in the company’s new search engine, Bing. The company has been strengthening its R&D base in India.

Texas Instruments (TXN) and Cadence Design Systems (CDNS) were among the first to come to India. They were followed later by companies like Nokia (NOK) and Ericsson (ERIC), both of which wanted to leverage off the low-cost base. Cisco (CSCO), Intel (INTC), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Dell (DELL), Accenture (ACN) and Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (BMY) are currently stepping up their R&D investments in the country.

India is currently cheaper than China, although the margin continues to narrow every day. The Chinese R&D industry gets serious help from the government in the form of student loans for completing PhDs, tax breaks for R&D outfits and special economic zones providing infrastructure to R&D facilities.

India suffers in this respect, since R&D has received little support from the government so far. Companies have gone ahead nonetheless, due to the stronger legal system that makes it easier to protect intellectual property. Historically, India produces a smaller number of R&D professionals compared to China and the U.S. With political stability returning, we might expect the situation to undergo significant change over the next few years.
Read the full analyst report on "HON"
Read the full analyst report on "MSFT"
Read the full analyst report on "TXN"
Read the full analyst report on "CDNS"
Read the full analyst report on "NOK"
Read the full analyst report on "ERIC"
Read the full analyst report on "CSCO"
Read the full analyst report on "INTC"
Read the full analyst report on "AMD"
Read the full analyst report on "DELL"
Read the full analyst report on "ACN"
Read the full analyst report on "BMY"
Zacks Investment Research

Every day the Zacks Equity Research analysts discuss the latest news and events impacting stocks and the financial markets. Stocks recently featured in the blog include: Intel Corp (INTC), ARM Holdings (ARMH), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Qualcomm (QCOM) and Texas Instruments (TXN).

Here are highlights from Friday’s Analyst Blog:

How Mobile is Intel?

Just as Intel Corp (INTC) has a dominant position in the microprocessor market for computers, ARM Holdings (ARMH) has the most widely used technology in cell phones and other mobile devices. Intel’s desire to go beyond its home ground may be traced to the maturing state of the enterprise type PC market and the much stronger growth rates in cell phones and mobile internet devices.

The higher demand has been driven by a sea change in technologies driving consumer electronics products that have virtually created demand for a completely new species. Consumers now want greater functionality, connectivity, portability, lower power consumption, smaller sizes and all this at a much lower cost.

What Intel wants to achieve requires a paradigm shift. In the PC market it enjoys a special position at system integrators that have for long kept Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) at bay. Being the financially stronger party, it is able to make higher investment in R&D and also see the investment converted to sales.

However, the market is heating up and AMD’s recent alliance should help it generate much needed volumes. What that could mean for the AMD bottom line is a different story. But it should definitely begin to create a larger dent in Intel’s revenues.

The cell phone market is vastly different. Here Intel is in AMD’s shoes, despite its financial strength and ARM processors rule the day. ARM chips are already packaged and sold by the likes of Qualcomm (QCOM), Samsung and Texas Instruments (TXN) and are the processors of choice for nearly 90% of all cell phones on the market today.

Even new operating systems, such as Google’s (GOOG) Android have been specially built to fit in with ARM architecture.

Intel’s problems are not limited to its x86 architecture, which is incompatible with many proprietary cell phones. The company has actually yet to come out with a satisfactory product for the market. The Atom is more of a computing chip, sort of a bridge between the two worlds.

By Intel’s own admission, the company will not be able to make an impression on the cell phone market before the advent of Moorestown. The power savings offered by Moorestown could make the Intel chip more appropriate for the cell phone market. Critics argue that the Cortex A9 from ARM could be shipping by then, which could maintain ARM’s supremacy.

However, Intel’s strategy goes deeper. The company has gone beyond handsets to the growing mobile internet devices (MID) market. According to research firm Forward Concepts, MID shipments will grow from 305,000 units in 2008 to 40 million units in 2012. The research firm expects chip companies serving the market to gain big time, growing from $29 million in 2008 to $2.6 billion in 2012.

Intel is expected to be the biggest winner with its x86 microarchitecture. The non-x86 gainers are likely to be Texas Instruments and Qualcomm.

Intel has also been developing the Moblin software platform for Atom based netbooks and nettops using open source technology from Linux. The beta version boasts the latest open source graphics technology; social networking (only Twitter and Last.fm at present); Mozilla browser (for Internet access, video embedding and the latest flash plug-in); zoomable media player, and a user interface for connection management.

Moblin will also be of great strategic importance when Intel is ready to enter the handset market through the recently announced Nokia (NOK) alliance.

Read the full analyst report on "INTC"
Read the full analyst report on "ARMH"
Read the full analyst report on "AMD"
Read the full analyst report on "QCOM"
Read the full analyst report on "TXN"
Read the full analyst report on "GOOG"
Read the full analyst report on "NOK"
Zacks Investment Research

Cymer delivers EUV light source, first tool from ASML Holding in 2010

After several years of development, Cymer Inc. (CYMI) shipped the first fully integrated laser-produced plasma (LPP) Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) lithography source to ASML Holdings NV (ASML). This is a major breakthrough in semiconductor design tools, with wide implications for semiconductor manufacturing over the next decade.

UV light is basically electromagnetic radiation of a wavelength shorter than that of visible light and longer than that of x-rays. These light sources are of particular importance in excimer lasers used for semiconductor manufacturing, where light passes through a photomask to imprint patterns therein onto a photoresist-coated silicon wafer.

An LPP EUV light source currently produces light at 13.5nm wavelength, which is 15x shorter than existing technologies. In an LPP EUV source, microscopic droplets of molten tin are fired through a vacuum chamber and individually tracked and vaporized by a pulsed high-power infrared laser.

The success of the new technology is tied to its ability to generate the much-needed volumes that could continue to lower the cost of individual chips. Cymer has already announced its ability to deliver 75 watts of power, which could expose a full die. Management hopes to scale this up to 100 watts by the end of the current quarter.

The higher power raises the throughput rate, which is currently 60 12-inch wafers per hour. The throughpout rate is expected to reach 100 wafers per hour when fully integrated with ASML scanners. ASML has already received orders for EUV lithographic tools from five customers across three continents. There should be more orders, as semiconductor capital equipment spending improves.

Founded in 1997 by Intel Inc. (INTC), the EUV LLC Consortium has played a key role in the development of the technology. The consortium consists of many of leading technology companies in the U.S. chip, including Motorola (MOT), Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Micron Technologies (MU), Infineon Technologies and International Business Machines (IBM).
Read the full analyst report on "CYMI"
Read the full analyst report on "ASML"
Read the full analyst report on "INTC"
Read the full analyst report on "MOT"
Read the full analyst report on "AMD"
Read the full analyst report on "IBM"
Zacks Investment Research

Google Chrome: The science of free economics

Google Inc. (GOOG) has announced a new operating system that is specifically targeted at netbooks. The Google Chrome, as it is called, is expected to hit the market in the second half of 2010.

Meanwhile, Google’s new Android operating system (specially designed for mobile phones) has already been selected for Acer netbooks (scheduled to launch in October this year). Apple (AAPL) has also indicated its intention to introduce its own netbook by the end of this year.

Since Microsoft (MSFT) dominates the netbook market, any competition irrespective of the source will take share from the company. So both Google and Apple can do significant damage.

But the real fear for Microsoft is Chrome’s potential to take over the entire PC market. Chrome will work with chips based on both x86 architecture from Intel (INTC) and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), as well as ARM chips from ARM Holdings (ARMH). The specific areas targeted by Google include speed and cost, which could hit Microsoft where it hurts. It is claimed that the Google Chrome would boot and give Internet access in a matter of seconds, and would come to the consumer virtually free.

Google can make this happen, since it is using open source software from Linux, and its own revenues are dependent on advertisements rather than technology. The cost of Windows 7, to be launched in October this year, is currently expected to be similar to Vista.

Add to this the cost of MS Office and other applications, without which the computer would not be very useful. Chrome is also expected to come with security enhancements that would simplify virus-fighting activities.

Microsoft may have anticipated this move while launching Bing, its new search engine directly pitted against Google. Some critics opine that Google is falling behind in online display advertisements that include both images and text. This is an important segment within online advertising and is expected to outgrow the plain text area over the next few years. Google may have to pull up its socks if it wants to protect its revenue base.

We also believe that Google would need to make arrangements with leading PC makers such as Hewlett Packard (HPQ), Dell (DELL), Acer and others who currently use windows for the bulk of their products. Given that some Ubuntu (Linux-based operating system) models are already available, everyone is likely to weigh their options carefully. The battle could end up in a big war, especially if Microsoft is able to take share from Google in the online advertising area.

Read the full analyst report on "GOOG"
Read the full analyst report on "MSFT"
Read the full analyst report on "HPQ"
Read the full analyst report on "ARMH"
Read the full analyst report on "DELL"
Read the full analyst report on "AAPL"
Read the full analyst report on "INTC"
Read the full analyst report on "AMD"
Zacks Investment Research

US stocks rose Thursday, helped by an advance in banking and healthcare stocks and a report on jobless claims and regional manufacturing revived hopes that the worst of the economic crisis is over. Breaking a three-day losing run, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 58.42 points to 8555.60 and the S&P 500 index advanced 7.66 points to 918.37. Tech-heavy NASDAQ ended the day little changed. The S&P is now up 35.5% above its 12-year low hit on March 9.

Although financials have been a drag this week, Thursday saw the sector recording gains after a three-day losing streak and leading the list of gainers among the 10 S&P 500 industry groups with an advance of 2.5%. Discover Financial Services (NYSE:DFS) rose 4% after reporting a less-than-anticipated growth in bad loans. Lincoln National (NYSE:LNC) jumped almost 7% after it was upgraded by Credit Suisse (NYSE:CS). Bank of America (NYSE:BAC) surged 4.9% and JP Morgan (NYSE:JPM) added 4.4%. However, a WSJ report said there was a possibility that General Electric (NYSE:GE) may choose to spin off its financial unit rather than accept the burden of government oversight of its non-financial operations, sending its shares down 1.5%. However, volume remained light at 1.1 billion.

The Department of Labor's report yesterday showed number of people collecting unemployment benefits after the initial week recorded its biggest decline since November 2001. New jobless claims, however, were up slightly as expected.

With massive treasury auctions due next week, Treasury prices declined, sending yields higher. The Treasury has announced plans to sell a record $165 billion debt next week, including $31 billion 13-week, $30 billion 26-week, $40 billion 2-year notes, $37 billion 5-years and $27 billion 7-years, to help fund stimulus spending. However, traders are increasingly getting worried that massive government spending could push food and energy prices higher, and eventually lead to inflation. As protection against a possible inflationary spiral and US dollar weakness, traders have bid up crude and other commodity prices, even as demand remains weak. Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS), however, recently advised oil prices could hit $95/barrel by late 2010. Further pressuring the outlook for inflation, No one expects the supply train to dwindle soon.

Utilities gained 2.2% yesterday as investors sought higher-yielding investments. Healthcare stocks rose 2.2% as traders picked up defensive plays. Technology stocks declined after Needham & Co. downgraded SanDisk (NASDAQ:SNDK) to "underperform," citing weakness in the NAND flash sector. SanDisk (NASDAQ:SNDK) shares plunged 6.1%, and Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE:AMD) fell 5.6%; Broadcom (NASDAQ:BRCM) was off 3.2%. After the market close, Research in Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM) reported better-than-expected results, but gave an outlook at the low end of Street targets.

Today being the end of the two day "quadruple witching" period, which marks the June expirations of stock futures and options with positions rolled into September contracts, trading is expected to remain volatile. CarMax (NYSE:KMX) is due to report quarterly earnings.
Zacks Investment Research

Here are highlights from Thursday's Analyst Blog:

Abercrombie Remains Focused

More consumers are trading down to cheaper alternatives on everything from food to staples to apparel, and many continue to avoid buying premium brands. In response, several retailers are lowering prices or shifting merchandise to capture sales from those customers seeking merchandise with lower price points

This environment has been especially difficult on Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) which is well-known for its premium fashion brands. The specialty retailer is routinely reporting monthly same-store sales in the -20% area. A big reason for the company's weak results is that management refuses to chase its competitors down the path of lower prices. Abercrombie remains committed to protecting its premium brands while it waits for industry conditions to improve.

Management has acknowledged that the recession could continue to hurt the retailer's results in the months ahead, but don't look for the retailer to change its pricing strategy. Instead, management plans to survive the difficult economic environment through expense management, seasonal clearance events, and a fewer new store openings. That strategy includes closing poor-performing stores such as its RUEHL stores, all of which are going to be closed by year end.

AMD Playing It "Smarter"

The "asset-smart strategy," as the formation of the new foundry company is referred to, is expected to enable Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) to generate the much-needed volumes of its superior technology products and enjoy the benefits of operating a fabless model. Management focus will now be on developing innovative products.

This is a breather for the company, but a lot depends on execution, in our opinion. AMD is pitted against very strong players, and will have to spend heavily on R&D in order to compete effectively.

The company's pricing strategy necessitates maximum cost containment and efficient operation in order to generate profits. Although the ongoing inventory correction is heavily impacting profitability, the product mix continues to improve. Management stated that the 45nm server products made a mark in Q408, and most of the products shipped in Q1 were 45nm products. This means that AMD is just a step behind Intel (INTC), which completed the transition in the third quarter of 2008.

Management stated that it was on track to bring the AMD product company operating breakeven point to $1.3 billion by the end of the current quarter. The asset-smart strategy is expected to play a key role in this regard. There will also be a significant reduction in manufacturing headcount, as the corporate focus is now expected to shift to R&D and marketing.

AMD's focus on the fast-growing greater China market is paying dividends. The company's Chinese business has grown in leaps and bounds, with the total contribution increasing from 14.5% of sales in 2005 to 44.0% in 2008, an increase of 201.8%.

According to a survey by Gartner in 2007, AMD captured 28% of the Chinese computing market by the second quarter of 2007. The research firm reported AMD growth across desktops, notebooks and servers. According to the research firm IDC, AMD has secured a very strong position in the desktop segment, which comprises two-thirds of the regional PC market.

The company has also established relations with local leaders such as Lenovo and TCL, as well as global leaders such as Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) , Acer and Dell (DELL). According to analysts at IDC, this two-pronged strategy is clearly going as expected, because most of the OEMs are showing an increasing preference for AMD over Intel processors for products being shipped into China.

AMD Plays It "Smarter," Looks to China

According to analysts at IDC, this two-pronged strategy is clearly going as expected, because most of the OEMs are showing an increasing preference for AMD over Intel processors for products being shipped into China.

We view the success in China as particularly significant, since developing economies are likely to remain the main drivers in the computing market, whereas developed economies are more mature, and are therefore likely to have slower growth rates. Additionally, the focus on China will enable AMD to build a sizable installed base, and encourage related hardware vendors to build products on the AMD platform. We do not, of course, expect this to be a cakewalk for AMD, as Intel has alredy strengthened its China strategy.

Sejuti Banerjea contributed to this post.

Asian stock markets recorded sharp gains Wednesday, helped by a jump in commodity prices and hopes that the U.S. banking system is showing sings of buoyancy. In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 stock average jumped 2.1% to 9,991.49 and the Hang Seng index in Hong Kong surged more than 4% to close at 18,785.66. Japanese investors shrugged off a report that suggested core machinery orders, a closely watched indicator of corporate capital spending, plunged to a 22-year low in April. South Korea's benchmark Kospi jumped 3.1% and India's Sensex added 2.3%.

Yesterday, Wall Street responded with a yawn to Obama Administration's announcement that 10 of the largest banks could repay $68 billion of government bailout cash. Although Treasury Secretary Geithner, appearing before the Senate Appropriations Committee, noted the repayment of the bailout money was a sign of "financial repair," stocks swung back and forth in a narrow range, signaling the much-expected announcement from the Treasury packed few surprises. Technology stocks, buoyed by Texas Instruments' (NYSE:TXN) better-than-expected earnings and sales outlook, pushed Nasdaq higher while the Dow Jones Industrial Average and broad based S&P 500 index ended the day mixed. The Tech-heavy Nasdaq rose 17.73 points, or 0.96%, to close at 1860.13. The DJIA slipped about 0.1% to close at 8,763.06. The S&P added 0.4% to close at 942.43.

Some big financial institutions have been eager to escape increased federal involvement and the restrictions that come with being part of the Troubled Asset Relief Program. Although the Treasury did not name the banks cleared to pay back the TARP funds, the ten institutions quickly confirmed they have been allowed to exit the government's financial assistance program. Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS), American Express (NYSE:AXP), JPMorgan Chase (NYSE:JPM), Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS), Bank of New York Mellon (NYSE:BK), BB&T (NYSE:BBT), Capital One (NYSE:COF), Northern Trust (NASDAQ:NTRS), State Street (NYSE:STT) and US Bancorp (NYSE:USB) were cleared to pay back the rescue funds. Commenting on the move, JP Morgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM) CEO Jamie Dimon noted, "Paying back TARP at this time is the right thing for JPMorgan Chase, and it's the right thing for our country." Financial sector shares edged up 0.4%, with American Express (NYSE:AXP) topping the list of gainers on the DJIA with a 5% jump, as traders were relieved that the industry's rising rates of card delinquencies and the potential for increased attendant loan losses had not prevented government approval of its repayments.

Following Texas Instruments' (NYSE:TXN) improved guidance, semiconductor shares rallied with Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE:AMD) closing up 3.1%, Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) rising 3.4%, and National Semiconductor (NYSE:NSM) closing up 4.4%. According to a Bank of America (NYSE:BAC) analyst note, Microchip Tech (NASDAQ:MCHP) has been witnessing improved China orders. BofA raised its price target on the company to $23.

Crude prices went beyond $70 per barrel on hopes a stronger economy will lift demand. Dollar prices continued to remain under pressure. Although concerns linger over the state of the world economy, commodities have recorded sharp gains recently as investors have increasingly turned towards crude to hedge against a weak dollar. Yesterday's $35 billion auction of 3-year Treasuries met with strong demand, however, as a yield of 1.96% topped expectations, and the bid-to-cover ratio equaled 2.8%. Today's calendar is for $19 billion in 10-year notes, with $11 billion 30-years slated for tomorrow. However, investors remain concerned that rising short-term interest rates will squeeze banking industry's net interest margins, in a sector that has already seen a 73% price run-up over the past three months.

Meanwhile, late Tuesday, the Supreme Court rejected an appeal from three Indiana state funds, consumer groups and others, clearing the way for the sale of most of Chrysler's assets to Italy's Fiat Group SpA.

Afternoon sentiment will reflect release of the Fed's latest take on regional economic conditions, revealed in its Beige Book at 2:00 AM ET. The report is likely to recount the well-aired areas of economic weakness, namely, depressed housing markets, soft consumer demand, deteriorating employment opportunities, and downward price pressures. Indications of an economic recovery's "green shoots" of growth may help boost sentiment.
Zacks Investment Research

U.S. stocks rose for the fifth time in six days as analysts recommended buying bank stocks and oil prices rose again pushing energy stocks higher. Investors also took heart from the drop in unemployment numbers and U.S. workers filing first-time claim for jobless benefits. The Dow Jones industrial average added 75 points, or 0.9% to close at 8750 and the S&P 500 index rose 1.1% to close at 942.46. The S&P is up 39% since hitting its 12-year low on March 9. The tech-heavy Nasdaq continued its strong performance and rose 1.3%.

Among S&P industry groups, financials were the leading gainers, rising 3.4% as traders took reports of a failed Latvian bond auction in their stride. A Bernstein upgrade of Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) to "outperform" also helped financials and the effects of the failed bond auction were nowhere to be seen. Bernstein suggested Goldman's capital strength will allow the firm to consolidate its position further in fixed income, currency and commodity markets. Fifth Third Bancorp (NASDAQ:FITB), which has been asked by regulators to raise $1.1 billion as part of the stress tests, reported sale of $1 billion common shares and said it is on track to raise the required amount. Keycorp (NYSE:KEY) jumped 20% after RBC Capital Markets cited the stock a "top pick." Today's reports suggesting the FDIC is pushing for an executive shuffle at Citigroup (NYSE:C) may imperil CEO Pandit's tenure, and provide another reason for firms to shun government funds and rush to pay back TARP monies.

Basic material shares continued their advance, rising 2.1%, with Alcoa (NYSE:AA), up 6.2%, leading the list of gainers on the DJIA. Improved demand scenario, especially from China, helped the advance in Alcoa shares. Oil and gas sector shares gained 2.1%. Among stocks from the sector, Chevron (NYSE:XOM) and Exxon Mobil (NYSE:CVX) led the gainers as crude prices surged 4.1% to $68.81, a seven-month closing high. Bullish analysts at Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) upped their forecasts for crude to $85 per barrel in 2009 and $95 in 2010.

Technology stocks advanced 1.5%, helped by prospects for new product launches and analyst upgrades. Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) rose after the iPhone-maker's profit and share-price target was increased by Oppenheimer. Some reports suggested CEO Steve Jobs was expected to return from his medical leave by month's end. Citi (NYSE:C) raised Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) price target to $580 from $450, on expectations that second quarter results will meet estimates and the company will report better results next year. Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE:AMD) said the company expects fourth quarter sales to improve from a year ago, helped by better economic conditions. Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) announced plans to purchase Wind River Systems (NASDAQ:WIND) for an all-cash deal valued at $884 million.

Dismal retail sales numbers in May, with an estimated 75% of retailers falling short of targets, posting an estimated 8.6% average drop in same-store-sales, however, could not check the rally. Costco (NASDAQ:COST) reported a 7% drop, versus estimates of a 6.4% decline; Target (NYSE:TGT) comparable-sales fell 6.1% versus expectations of a 4.3% drop; Saks (NYSE:SKS) disappointed with a 26.6% sales fall versus an anticipated 14% drop; Macy's (NYSE:M), however, was slightly ahead of expectations with its 9.1% decline, less than the 9.3% anticipated.
Zacks Investment Research

Nowadays, the fund is worth $10 billion. Ainslie, like many of the other fund managers I've profiled, has a background rooted in learning from legendary great Julian Robertson at Tiger Management. So, due to the fact that these proteges learned from the best and have had great success running their own hedge funds, I continually try to find a reason not to follow these funds. And, needless to say I'm never successful. Some contacts over at Maverick have explained that their hedge fund strategy is straight up stock picking, both long and short. They made it clear though, that they do not employ pairs trades. Although, some of their long/short setups might be in the same sector. They try to hedge their positions like a true hedge fund by picking out the shining stars in certain sectors, as well as identifying the pieces of garbage. Now, of course, this presents us with a problem in that the 13F filings only show long positions (unless they're holding puts on a name, we can see those). So, a good amount of Maverick's portfolio (the entire short side) is unbeknownst to us, because they have reported zero put positions. But, let's look on the bright side in that we can see all their long positions. Maverick uses a value approach (obviously learned from Julian) and one of their most popular metrics is finding companies and comparing their enterprise value to sustainable free cash flow.

So, now that we've got a little background on Maverick, let's see what they were up to. The following are Maverick Capital's current holdings as of June 30th 2008, as released in their most recent 13F filing with the SEC. Netapp (NTAP): 1.81% of the portfolio

----------------------------------------------------

Breakdown: Maverick changed up their portfolio a decent amount over the past quarter. Most notable are their changes within their top 10 holdings. Hedge fund favorite Qualcomm (QCOM) was Maverick's 3rd largest holding last filing. This filing, they no longer even hold a position. Additionally, they were selling off chunks of other top 10 holdings from last quarter. They sold off 33% of their position in Avon Products (AVP), which was their 4th largest holding just one quarter ago. They also sold over 51% of their Gamestop (GME) position, which last quarter was their 7th largest holding. With those positions vacating their place in the top 10 holdings of Maverick's portfolio, new holdings obviously took their place. America Movil (AMX), another hedge fund favorite, was Maverick's 9th largest holding last time. This time, they increased their position by 129% and it is now their 3rd largest holding. They obviously used the weakness in this name to add to their position, just like fellow 'Tiger Cub' fund Lone Pine Capital. Maverick also added heavily to Nordstrom (JWN), increasing their position by 136% and making it now their 9th largest holding.

Maverick was out adding to tech across the board. Apple (AAPL) and Research in Motion (RIMM) are their top 2 largest holdings respectively, as they boosted their positions in both by over 14% each. Additionally, they added to their Marvell (MRVL) position, bringing it up to the fund's 5th largest position now. Maverick also continues to build a position in Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), as it now is their 8th largest holding.

Among their new positions this quarter are First Solar (FSLR), Lorillard (LO), and CVS Caremark (CVS). I highlight these three in particular because Maverick started large, new positions in all three names. First Solar (FSLR) was brought up all the way to the fund's 6th largest holding after not even owning shares last quarter. They started a new position in CVS Caremark (CVS) and brought it up to the fund's 15th largest holding. Also, they added heavily to Lorillard (LO) as well, making this new position their 12th largest holding. This position is interesting because we also saw Lone Pine Capital (ran by Stephen Mandel Jr.) start a new position in this exact same name. And, actually, this is not the only position that both Maverick and Lone Pine both started together. In this 13F filing, we see that Maverick started a position in Hansen Natural (HANS). And, Lone Pine recently disclosed that they have a 7.8% stake in HANS. It's definitely common to see many similar positions within the portfolios of various 'Tiger Cub' managers who now run their own funds because they all undoubtedly keep in touch and come from the same school of thought.

One last thing I would like to point out is Maverick selling completely out of various consumer related names. They sold completely out of their positions in Autozone (AZO), Hanesbrands (HBI), Sears (SHLD), Starbucks (SBUX), Crocs (CROX), and OfficeMax (OMX).

You can view their most recent 13F as filed with the SEC here.

Guest post by Market Folly

Free Daily Hedge Fund Newsletter

Related to Investment Securities/Holding Tool:

Top 52 Most Popular Articles

Hedge Fund Tracker Tool

Financial Certification

Hedge Fund Forum

Hedge Fund Accountants

Investment Consultants

Investment Book

Hedge Fund Terms and Definitions

Geographical Hedge Fund Guides

Hedge Fund Database

Permanent Link: Maverick Capital Management 13F Holdings Analysis

Tags: Maverick Capital Management, Maverick Capital Hedge Fund, Maverick Capital New York London, Maverick Capital LP LTD LLC Inc, Maverick Capital Lee Ainslie, Hedge Fund

Large-cap chipmaker Broadcom (BRCM) has reached a deal to purchase the digital television chip business from Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) for a reported $192.8 million. AMD shares are up on the news, but Broadcom has sold off 3.5% or so as of mid-day, as this could gouge earnings in the near term, according to a Reuters report today.

Even before this buyout news had been made, Zacks senior equities analyst Abdul Saleh had this to say in his most recent research report on Broadcom: "[G]rowth in the traditional wireline business is expected to slow down in the second half of the year, [and] gross margin is estimated to decline as the company continues to ramp up sale of new products to new and existing customers." Shares of BRCM remain a Hold.

Zacks senior analyst Ken Nagy, CFA, who covers AMD, is quoted thusly about the company in his latest report: "We remain bullish about this stock, but prefer to take a wait-and-see approach for the time being." We will check to see if this cash infusion will be enough for the analyst to upgrade his rating of AMD looking ahead.
