China Booming Again

The long-term key for China is to generate more consumer demand at home so it is not forever dependent on exports to fuel its growth. This is the mirror image of what the U.S. needs. We cannot forever run trade deficits, consuming more from the rest of the

China Booming Again – Analyst Blog

Dirk Van Dijk (November 4th, 2009) Writes:
The World Bank now estimates that China will grow 8.4% in 2009, up from its June forecast of 7.2% growth. Like the U.S., China embarked on a large fiscal stimulus program, one that relative to the size of its economy is more than three times as large as the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act was. Well, surprise, surprise -- a bigger package has been more effective than a smaller one at lifting economic growth. China, of course, is in a better fiscal position to invest in its economy than the U.S. That is a legacy of the years of fiscal mismanagement in the U.S. going into the crisis, and the fact that China perpetually runs large trade surpluses while the U.S. runs chronic trade deficits. For 2010, as some of the stimulus in China wears off -- but as the private economy there regains its footing -- ...

Increasing Alzheimer’s Patients Spell Drug Profits

Investment U (September 22nd, 2009) Writes:

Increasing Alzheimer’s Patients Spell Drug Profits

Some disturbing figures rolled out yesterday concerning growth rates of Alzheimer’s patients. The number of people affected grew 10% in the past four years and is expected to grow to over 115 million by 2050. That’s a doubling of cases every 20 years.

The number is expected to grow because of the diets and activity levels amongst older individuals in developed countries. Apparently we’re getting too much junk food and not enough exercise.

Numbers like that are scary to contemplate for many, especially families with relatives at risk, but they’re statistics that pharmaceutical companies love hearing.

Which is why we thought we’d pull up a few of the leading Alheimer’s drugs and the publicly listed companies that produce them: drugs like Aricept from Pfizer (NYSE: PFE), Exelon from Novartis AG ADR

Disney’s Spidey Sense is Tingling

Investment U (September 11th, 2009) Writes:

Disney’s Spidey Sense is Tingling

by Louise Harris, Investment U Research Team

The entertainment world is changing, and companies in the business know that all too well… hence the reason why The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS) just announced its acquisition of Marvel Entertainment Inc. (NYSE: MVL)

Comic book fans might hate the move, but in order to survive in today’s climate, Disney has to look outside the box office to the whole entertainment package.

Gone are the days when movies made all their money at the box office. And with DVD sales shrinking, Hollywood has no choice but to bring in more revenue by delving into toys, videogames, clothing, rides, digital copies of movies and Internet streaming.

Naturally, Disney hopes to milk the merger for all its worth, exploiting Marvel’s 5,000 characters across the entire spectrum over the

Investing in Commodities: How to Buy Gold During Secular Market Cycles

Investment U (July 22nd, 2009) Writes:

Investing in Commodities: How to Buy Gold During Secular Market Cycles

by Peter Krauth, Contributing Editor

Editor’s Note: With the incredible amount of interest in buying gold and investing in commodities, we’ve turned to Money Morning commodities expert Peter Krauth to give us an idea on where we are in regards to their historic cycles and how investors can take advantage of where we are right now…

There’s never been a better time to begin investing in commodities.

That’s a very simple statement, but it’s backed by three powerful points:

Commodities tend to do well when more popular investments (with retail investors) are doing poorly, and when economic conditions are less than ideal. When the typical economic underpinnings are at play, a “Secular Bull Market” for commodities tends to last for about 17 years. And right now, the underpinnings are far from typical - and may even be exemplary, meaning this bull-market ...

China Goes Green, Dumps Hummer

Investment U (June 26th, 2009) Writes:

China Goes Green, Dumps Hummer

by The Investment U Research Team

In what may be one of the sickest cases of irony we’ve seen this year, China has decided to block Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Co from buying General Motor’s (OTC: GMGMQ) Hummer brand for – wait for it – environmental concerns.

We’ll give you time to stop laughing.

We know. It’s pretty much what we thought. China has a well-deserved reputation for being one of the most polluted nations in the world. It’s cities round out the worst of the worst lists.

But apparently there is a strong push inside the great wall to at least appear like they’re doing something. They’ve cut back the construction on a number of projects like the Xiaonanhai dam and the Yunnan

Gold climbs to $1250, Oil at $200

Investment U (May 26th, 2009) Writes:

Gold climbs to $1250, Oil at $200

by The Investment U Research Team

We don’t know if its scaremongering, boasting, gamesmanship or true prognostication, but this morning we’re looking at a couple of reports – One from Standard Bank Group on gold’s price future, and the other from Saudi Arabia warning of $200 oil prices.

Gold has been fluctuating – it’s currently at $950. And oil has been sitting around $60 a barrel. Oil looks to be the safer of the two bets here. Besides, we’d rather see the opportunity for a 230% return on oil than a 32% return from gold.

While the Saudi’s argue that oil’s price is going to rise because of the lack of investment in production, its pretty clear that oil’s price will rise because two big reasons.

We haven’t found a new
