Initial Jobless Claims Continue Decline, 502K Figure Beats Expectations

QualityStocks (November 12th, 2009) Writes:

Labor Department statistics released today showed a marked decline in initial jobless claims, extending a run of such declines.

Initial claims are an important barometer for layoffs and hiring. A 12K decline to 502,000 from the previous week, and a drop in the 4-week average to 519,750, is a strong indicator of improvement. The 4-week average is down 20% since the highpoint earlier this year, and initial claims look like those from the beginning of this year. Despite these facts, we are still well above the accepted 450,000 benchmark, which represents the point at which the labor market is theoretically adding jobs.

Continuing claims (which trail initial claims by a week) fell 2.4% to 5.6M, also beating out the expectations of market analysts. Congress has created the largest extension program to date for jobless claims, adding a total of 73 additional weeks to the base 26 weeks of benefits,

Shutterfly Buys Tiny Pictures – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (September 16th, 2009) Writes:
Earlier this week, Shutterfly Inc. (SFLY) bought Tiny Pictures for $1.3 million in cash and another $1.3 million in restricted stock with some performance triggers to employees. The acquisition will help Shutterfly to expand its mobile offerings by using Tiny Pictures’ mobile expertise.

Tiny Pictures has been facing tough competition from the flurry of photo sharing sites on the Web in recent years. Investors Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Reid Hoffman, Joi Ito and Mohr Davidow Ventures expect the company to produce very low returns going forward. Since its inception in 2005, Tiny Pictures has raised $11.2 million in two installments.

Tiny Pictures runs a site called Radar.net, which allows mobile sharing and is integrated with Twitter, Facebook, Flickr and other social networks. Shutterfly wants to apply some of these social media features to its own service.

After buying publishing service Nexo Systems for less than $15 million last year,

ADBE Rises on Outlook – Zacks Tale of the Tape

James Giaquinto (March 5th, 2009) Writes:
Adobe Systems Inc. (ADBE) finished Thursday's session in positive territory by about 3.7%, as investors reacted to the company's preliminary fiscal first-quarter results from Wednesday afternoon.

Although the software company pulled back on its sales guidance for the quarter, ADBE expects profit to surpass Wall Street's expectations.

Battling worsening market conditions, the company now expects non-GAAP EPS of 44 cents to 45 cents. Previously, the guidance encompassed 43 cents to 47 cents.

Revenue is now anticipated between $783 million and $786 million, instead of $800 million to $850 million. ADBE attributed this revenue reduction to weakness in its creative and knowledge worker businesses.

Despite the rise in its share price today, earnings estimates for this fiscal year and next have moved lower in recent days.

ADBE is a Zacks #4 Rank ("Sell") company. (The Zacks Rank is a quantitative, short-term indicator.) On a longer-term basis, though, ADBE currently has

Company Layoffs: More Companies Trim the Fat without Trimming the Workforce

Contrarian Profits (December 26th, 2008) Writes:

The U.S. unemployment rate, currently at a level of 6.5%, could rise to 8% next year. But it could also find a ceiling sooner than expected, as more companies implement unpaid vacations and four-day workweeks to preserve jobs.

The U.S. recession may just now be entering full swing, but storm clouds have been gathering for more than a year and many companies have already trimmed payrolls. Now, the goal for many companies is to prepare for an economic rebound by finding ways to keep the their skilled productive labor intact.

More companies are exploring alternatives to layoffs,” John A. Challenger, chief executive of consulting firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, told BusinessWeek. “If they can keep people on until the business turns around, the company would be in much better shape to ramp up quickly.”

Dell Inc. (DELL) employees, for instance, recently received a memo

Adobe Systems, Inc. (ADBE) Moves Improved Flash Technology To TV With New Agreement

QualityStocks (September 10th, 2008) Writes:

Adobe Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADBE) and OpenTV Corp. (OPTV) have announced a strengthening of their partnership with the addition of Adobe’s Flash Lite software to OpenTV’s middleware. The move allows web technologies such as HTML and Adobe Flash to be easily combined for faster services and to readily generate time-sensitive applications such as advertising and other enhanced TV applications.

The integrated product that results is expected to first be available in the Japanese market in the second half of 2009. OpenTV technology enhances digital television online and offline, while Adobe’s relatively new AIR software has allowed a greater openness of much of its code infrastructure to other application developers.

“By combining our technologies, the authoring and development benefits of Adobe Flash with the digital TV experience and technology of OpenTV, we’re opening the door to a host of new service possibilities for operators and developers worldwide,” said Tracy Geist, OpenTV’s senior VP
