VimpelCom (VIP) – Bull of the Day

Zacks Market Commentaries (October 14th, 2009) Writes:
We reaffirm our Outperform recommendation for VimpelCom (VIP), Russia's second largest cellular carrier with over 25% market share. Reported earnings in the last quarter outpaced the Zacks Consensus Estimate, driven by foreign exchange gains.

We continue to be intrigued by VimpelCom's successful sales growth trend and its ability to retain subscribers on a recurring basis, even as overall economic factors remain weak. The company is also progressing well in expanding its 3G wireless and residential broadband network deployments, as reflected by healthy subscriber accretion in the last quarter.

Additionally, the ongoing expansion initiatives into emerging Asian markets (including Cambodia and Vietnam) are expected to boost opportunity in wireless, given the lower mobile penetration levels in these regions.Zacks Investment Research

Nokia Netbook Unveiled – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (August 25th, 2009) Writes:

As expected, Nokia (NOK) finally confirmed its entry into the netbook segment. The netbook named “Nokia Booklet 3G" will have a 10 inch screen, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and 3G Wireless access. Most importantly the netbook will run on Microsoft (MSFT) windows and Intel’s (INTC) Atom processor.   This shows the company’s intention to increase its product portfolio and enter the computer segment. We believe this is a counter move by Nokia, a reply to computer manufacturers’ decision to enter the smart phone space. The netbook market is growing very fast and has number of players including Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), Lenovo, Acer and Asus. This could signal a battle between computer/laptop manufacturers and mobile phone manufacturers as each one is trying to venture into another’s business.   Netbooks are internet devices, which fall in between smart phones and laptops. So, a natural progression for the smart phone makers

Verizon Beats Consensus – Analyst Blog

Zacks Market Commentaries (July 27th, 2009) Writes:
Verizon - Net Dips, Alltel Boosts Topline   Verizon (VZ), the largest US wireless carrier by subscribers, reported results for the second quarter of 2009 on Jul 27, 2009. Results were highlighted by healthy gains across strategic growth areas such as wireless, broadband Internet and video. Reported revenue came in line with consensus and our expectations increasing 11.3% year over year to $26.9 billion, driven by contribution from Alltel Corp acquired in early 2009. However, reported earnings per share (EPS) attributable to the company fell short of our estimates, declining 21.2% to $0.52 from $0.66 reported in the year ago quarter, largely due to rising costs and declining wireline businesses. On an adjusted basis, EPS fell to $0.63 from $0.67 registered in the prior-year quarter, beating the consensus. Total wireless revenue increased 27.7% year over year to $15.5 billion (58% of the total revenue), increasing 29.6% ...
