Here are highlights from Thursday’s Analyst Blog:
Baker-Hughes a Buy Up to $50
Our continued favorable view of Baker Hughes, Inc. (BHI) shares reflects the company’s limited exposure to the weak North American natural gas market, its leading product-centric asset portfolio with a strong international presence, and excellent financial health.
While the operating environment remains challenging worldwide, the hardest hit region is the onshore U.S. market due to its natural gas-centric orientation. Of the large-cap service players, Baker Hughes has the least exposure to this market.
IBM to Cut as Many as 5,000 Jobs
An Employees Union source within International Business Machines Corp. (IBM) has announced that IBM will cut over 4,000 employees (possibly 5,000), mostly from the Global Business Services group, mainly in the US, starting today, Thursday, March 26. The work may be sourced to IBM’s facilities in India. The company had a total workforce of 398,455 as of the end of 2008, with about 115,000 in the US.
From a geographic perspective, the Americas’ 4th-quarter revenues were $11.5 billion, a decrease of 2.0% year-over-year (up 2.0%, adjusting for currency). Revenues from Europe/Middle East/Africa were $9.5 billion, down 12.0% (1.0%, adjusting for currency). Asia-Pacific revenues decreased 1.0% (1.0%, adjusting for currency) to $5.5 billion.
China Mobile Shows Strength
China Mobile Ltd. ADS (CHL), the largest wireless carrier in the world, continues to deliver healthy operating results as evidenced by strong subscriber accretion in 2008. The company exited the year with 72% share of the Chinese wireless market.
However, growth slowed in late 2008 due to general economic conditions and increased competition. Nevertheless, it remains our view that the new competitive entities will face unanticipated challenges deploying and advancing services to levels and coverage delivered by China Mobile.
NBIX Releases Positive Results
On March 25, 2009, Neurocrine Biosciences, Inc. (NBIX) reported results from the phase II -702 study, also called Lilac Petal, testing elagolix for the treatment of endometriosis.
Elagolix met the primary efficacy goal for both the 150mg and 250mg on the clinically validated PGI-C scale for both overall lower PGI-C score and percent of women with a score below 2. The 150mg dose was also statistically significant for the clinically validated EHP scale.
Potash a Hold at Current Price
Potash Corp. (POT), the world’s leading producer of potash and the largest fertilizer producer, has benefited from higher fertilizer application rates, higher crop plantings and increasing demand for biofuels. Rising fertilizer prices, especially potash, boosted Potash Corp’s earnings in 2008.
The company’s manufacturing plants are located in low-cost areas and its financials are solid. However, the global economic crisis and weakened demand are matters of concern. These force us to maintain our Hold rating of the stock.
