Superlattice Power, Inc. (OTCBB: SLAT) is engaged in developing and marketing their superlattice cathode material for use in lithium ion rechargeable batteries for residential and commercial properties. The Superlattice structure is a hexagonal structure that can accommodate more lithium and more energy. The elements and specialty transition metals have been selected precisely to make Superlattice cathode materials safe, environmentally friendly and less expensive.

Hybrid Technologies has been working closely with Superlattice Power to research and develop mass scale production of cathode superlattice nano- and submicron-sized structure for use in rechargeable lithium ion batteries. Superlattice Power has developed a project plan to ensure that cathode materials are used and developed correctly.

The initial step the company takes is the synthesis of high-capacity cathode materials. In this process, a number of variations in heat-treatment temperatures and compositions of the cathode materials will be used in conducting the synthesis. During this preliminary evaluation, samples will be prepared and delivered to subcontractors for characterization and performance evaluation. After the completion of the synthesis, the company’s next task is to characterize the developed cathode materials using analytical and electrochemical techniques. Using X-ray diffraction to evaluate such things as crystal structure and surface area, the company will also be given information related to the formation and changes of the crystal structure and minimum temperature. There will also be the scanning of electron microscopy, EDS analysis, BET surface area, and particle size distribution in order to correlate physical and chemical properties with their electrochemical performance.

Following the synthesis and characterization of developed cathode materials, the company’s next step is to fabricate positive (cathode) electrodes of uniform loading that combine good mechanical integrity with ease of electrolyte accessibility. The development of half-cells and cells using appropriate carbonaceous anode immediately follows the fabrication phase. The main objective is to develop half-cells with the cathode materials and metallic lithium anode in electrolytes. The process of fabrication and optimization is best when conducted by all parties involved in a project with proper nondisclosure legal agreements.

An evaluation of performance and assessment of technical feasibility will be conducted after the fabrication and development of half-cells is concluded. These tests include a safety test (no fire/no explosion), hot oven test (130 degrees Celsius for 2 hours), overcharge test, external short-circuit test that evaluates cell voltage, a float charge test, and a temperature ramp test. Once all the testing is completed, a final report indicating all the experimental procedures, results, critical analyses of the results and recommendation of the future work will be prepared jointly by Hybrid Technologies and participants that will maintain NDA rules.
