Shares of Family Dollar Stores Inc. (FDO) climbed more than 6% today on high volume of about 4.7 million, against the average of 2.6 million.

In its fiscal second quarter, Family Dollar reported an 8.7% increase in sales, which stood at $1.992 billion.

For fiscal 2009, the company expects revenue to increase between 5% and 7%, with comparable store sales between 3% and 5%. It sees full-year earnings per share between $1.90 and $2.00.

Meanwhile, 2 analysts out of 18 have lifted their expectations, pushing the current-year estimate up a penny to $1.97 per share over the past month.
