Aeropostale, Inc. (ARO) and AeroVironment, Inc. (AVAV) could top expectations. Staples, Inc. (SPLS) and Smithfield Foods, Inc. (SFD) could disappoint.

As we enter the lull between fourth-quarter and first-quarter earnings, wildcard events will influence trader sentiment. In particular, threats of corporate bankruptcies, initiatives from the Obama administration, credit rating downgrades and other related events (e.g. dividend cuts, mergers, etc.) will have a substantial impact on market direction.

In regards to the second week of March, we have confirmed scheduled reports from 170 companies, including S&P 500 members Brown-Foreman Corporation (BF.B), The Kroger Co. (KR), National Semiconductor Corporation (NSM), Pall Corporation (PLL) and Staples, Inc. (SPLS).

The economic calendar is light with the most notable reports being February retail sales (Thursday) and the first look at March consumer confidence (Friday).

  • Tuesday: January wholesale inventories
  • Wednesday: February treasury budget, weekly crude inventories
  • Thursday: February retail sales, January business inventories, weekly initial jobless claims
  • Friday: Preliminary March University of Michigan consumer confidence, January trade deficit

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke will speak to the Council of Foreign Relations on Tuesday, Mar 10. His speech is entitled “Financial Reform to Address Systemic Risk”.

Stocks are still oversold, but they can stay oversold for a seemingly painful period of time. My target for the Dow has been 6,300, so we’ll see if that provides a level of support.

Companies That Could Issue Positive Earnings Surprises

< ?DART(15);?>

Last month, Aeropostale, Inc. (ARO) raised its fourth-quarter guidance to $1.00 per share, from its earlier outlook of 90 to 92 cents per share. The clothing retailer credited same-store sales growth of 11% and lower-than-anticipated inventory losses. Nearly all of the covering analysts raised their guidance in response, pushing the consensus estimate up to $1.00.

ARO has topped expectations several times over the past 2 years and continued to generate strong same-store sales growth in February, so there is a good possibility of a bullish earnings report. Aeropostale is scheduled to report on Thursday, Mar 12, after the close of trading.

AeroVironment, Inc. (AVAV) has topped expectations for 8 consecutive quarters. Ahead of the company’s fiscal third-quarter report, 1 brokerage analyst raised his profit forecast. Though the consensus earnings estimate is unchanged at 27 cents per share, the most accurate estimate is suggesting profits could total 31 cents per share. AeroVironment is scheduled to report on Monday, Mar 9, after the close of trading.

Companies That Could Issue Negative Earnings Surprises

Three brokerage analysts have cut their fourth-quarter profit projections on Staples, Inc. (SPLS) within the past few weeks. The negative revisions have caused the consensus earnings estimate to slip by a penny to 42 cents per share. The most accurate estimate is more bearish at 41 cents per share. Staples has missed twice over the past 4 quarters.

Smithfield Foods, Inc. (SFD) has missed twice within the past 3 quarters. Ahead of the pork producer’s fiscal third-quarter report, 3 brokerage analysts have cut their forecasts. The negative revisions widened the expected loss to 27 cents per share. The most accurate forecast is more bearish at a loss of 31 cents per share. Smithfield Foods is scheduled to report on Thursday, Mar 12, before the start of trading.
