If one chicken laid all of the eggs used for one day of production at Tastykake, it would take that chicken 572 years to lay enough eggs. That’s how much production goes on daily at Tasty Baking Company’s Philadelphia and Oxford, Pennsylvania manufacturing facilities. Founded in 1914, and headquartered in Philadelphia, Tasty Baking Company is one of America’s leading bakers of snack cakes, pies, cookies, and donuts.

Trading on NASDAQ, the company began when Pittsburgh baker Philip J. Baur and Boston egg salesman Herbert T. Morris went into business in Philadelphia to produce baked goods. Their commitment was to use only the finest ingredients delivered fresh every day to the bakery. Morris’ wife loved the baking concoctions, and after trying samples, said they were “tasty,” and eventually the business became the Tasty Baking Company with the brand name, Tastykake.

For their first day of operations, Tastykake bakers made 100 cakes. Today, the company produces over 4.8 million cakes, donuts, cookies, and pies each day. The company entered the donut market in 1985. Today, they make more than 1.4 million donuts each day. Tastykake also bakes 250,000 pies every day.

Tasty Baking Company makes over 100 products under their Tastykake brand name. Products include Butterscotch Krimpets®, Peanut Butter Kandy Kakes®, and Tastykake Sensables®, which is their sugar-free product line. They also market 100-calorie snack bars. This year, Tastykake reintroduced a line of low-fat products. Of all the different products they make, the best-selling product for the company is their Peanut Butter Kandy Kakes. The company’s gross annual sales are over $250 million.

The company distributes their products through their direct-to-store delivery system. Over 450 independent sales distributors service 16,000 stops each week. Tasty Baking Company’s main geographic region is from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, west to Cleveland, Ohio; north to Northern New Jersey; south to Northern Virginia; and east to the Eastern Shore of Maryland. They work with third-party distributors to sell their baked goods in regions neighboring their main market area.

In addition, customers can order the company’s Tastykake line of products throughout the United States by using the company’s website or by calling their 1-800-33-TASTY line. The Tasty Baking Company has come a long way since they first set up shop baking their cakes with quality ingredients. Their commitment is to continue to provide this same quality for customer and investor value.
