Stem Cell Therapy International Corp. (SCII.OB), which is in the process of formally changing its name to AmStem International, is on track to become one of the largest providers of cord blood stem cells in the world. AmStem, already successfully pursuing U.S. and European stem cell markets, is now positioning itself as a major player in Asia through its acquisition of Korean stem cell company HistoStem, the largest cord blood bank facility in the world (the nearest competitor is less than half as big).
HistoStem is the only company in Korea approved by the Korean FDA to provide stem cells for clinical and surgical applications. There is no comparable regulatory approval of stem cells at this level anywhere in the world. HistoStem has successfully developed a number of pioneering technologies to isolate and work with stem cells in the treatment of disease, and has an established supply chain allowing it to expand throughout Asia. HistoStem will become a 90% owned subsidiary of AmStem, allowing HistoStem to remain a publicly traded company in Korea.
AmStem anticipates leveraging HistoStem’s advanced technologies to help accelerate its rise as a world leader in the collection, isolation, and storage of cord blood and stem cells for regenerative medicine applications. AmStem is devoted to treating patients with stem cell transplantation therapy, in addition to providing new lines of stem cell products to medical and research facilities. The company’s underlying goal is to fulfill the worldwide promise of stem cells in the treatment of debilitating diseases.
Worldwide demand for stem cell technology is expected to reach nearly $10 billion by 2015, with stem cell product sales in the U.S. growing by over 100% each year. AmStem’s revenue potential is multi-faceted, with opportunities in stem cell and cord blood storage and sales, stem cell supplies, and stem cell therapy.
