If you’ve ever lost a cell phone, you’ll be happy to hear that Location Based Technologies’ PocketFinder® personal locator service is now available for download to Google Android based smartphones. The company is ready to release the service to the T-Mobile G1, the first mobile phone to use the Android open standard mobile device platform. The system will provide users with all the features of PocketFinder, including device location, travel history, and even speed alerts.

Google acquired Android in 2005 to develop software for mobile phones, and in 2007 formed the Open Handset Alliance (OHA), a partnership with several companies, to further enhance and encourage mobile phone software technologies. OHA introduced Android as a truly open operating platform for mobile phones, allowing application developers to have full access to the underlying system software, thereby making it far easier to develop and implement world class applications. Location Based Technologies is one of the first companies to take full advantage of this opportunity.

Dave Morse, Location’s CEO, said, “In addition, our new Android-based application will eventually support other smartphones and smartphone platforms as we intensify our development efforts to make this enhancement available to their customers and expand our coverage of the global marketplace.”

Location Based Technologies is best known for its PocketFinder® and PetFinder® products, which are small wafer-like devices that can easily fit into a pocket or purse. An authorized remote viewer anywhere in the world can use the Internet or a telephone to locate the devices, and presumably its carrier. The system even allows the designating of electronic fences, to notify someone when the carrier leaves or enters a specified area.

The Android-based PocketFinder service is currently being offered for only $4.95 per month, and is also available on a 15-day free trial. The service can be downloaded from www.PocketFinder.com or from www.Android.com/Market.
