Here is a list of country indices, a US REIT index, and bond indices (along with representative funds) sorted by 1, 3, 5 and 10 year total returns.
The funds included are: BSV, BND, BIV, BLV, VNQ, EIS, EWL, EWM, VTI, EWJ, ECH, EWP, EWC, WT, THD, VEA, EWQ, EWG, EWS, EWK, IF, EWU, LIS, EWI, EWW, EWN, EZA, EWZ, EWA, VWO, EWD, INP, EWY, FXI, TUR, EWO, RSX, EWK, IRL.
There has been pretty much no place to hide from declining stock markets in the past year other than short-term and intermediate bonds, and they have not been consistently friendly.
US stocks did worse than US bonds, non-US developed markets and emerging markets over 10 and 5 years. Over 3 years, US and non-US developed stock markets generated approximately equal returns (negative). Over 1 year, US stocks are behind US bonds and still negative, but did better than non-US developed and emerging markets.
Japan has been negative for 1, 3 and 5 years, but slightly positive for 10 years.
US REITs have been negative for 1 year, but positive for 3, 5 and 10 years.
Over 1 year, only bonds were positive.
Over 3 years, bonds and emerging markets were positive, but barely so for emerging markets
Over 5 years, bonds and all the significant stock markets except for the US, Japan and Taiwan were positive (the US being just barely negative)
Over 10 years, bonds and all significant stock markets were positive, except for Taiwan (the US being just barely positive)
