4 STAR STOCKS (BUY RECOMMENDATION)
Staples
a. Staples acquired Dutch office goods supplier Corporate Express.
b. Cost synergies will be realized in the Corporate Express, given overlap of operations in the U.S.
c. The acquisition will establish a contract-delivery business for Staples in Europe.
5 STAR STOCKS (STRONG BUY)
Varian Medical Systems (VAR)
a. Recent concerns regarding reduced spending by hospital customers are overblown.
b. Varian noted that it has not seen any sales lost due to credit market conditions, and forecast 11%-12% growth in the oncology business despite lower reimbursement.
c. Varian remains in growth mode with new product launches, rising sales in the security segment and a strong order backlog.
d. Target price is $57.
